Backstory for the Manual
Starfleet Intelligence reports have recently brought to light that the Romulans have been fielding their own missile cruiser design, designated the VU-2 Firehawk.

From what information that has been gathered, it seems that despite a more limited economy, various Romulan Houses with Senate approval took it upon themselves to each fund the development of one of these vessels. The Type 1 seems to have been designed to test the concept, with the mid range RP-2 as it missile armament. The Type 2 simply replaced the missiles with RP-3 torpedoes.

Sketchy reports indicate that there may even be a plasma armed variant that is being used as a planetary bombardment platform on the joint Romulan/Klingon border against unknown targets. Based on the sensor data gathered by USS Enterprise during the Romulan incursion of the Neutral Zone on Stardate 2/0710 against Earth Outpost 4, this would be a devastating use of said vessels.

Comparing the technical specifications data, Starfleet Intelligence notes that the Senate seemed to have used the basic warp, impulse and deflector systems of this design in the later V-22 Ravenkiller class Cruiser, although in a totally different hull configuration. As a matter of efficiency, this indicates how even the more limited resources of the Empire can design modern combat vessels capable of engaging both Klingon and Federation current designs.

My Designers Notes
The Romulan equivalent to the Klingon FU-12 Missile cruiser, designed after the FU-12 to allow the 3 major powers to have a Missile Cruiser. The Type 3 is a beast of a missile platform, that can arm all her missiles, her two disruptors to almost full power, have 3 shields up and still move at speed three! Arm only one disruptor to minimum and half arm each plasma weapon, and she can then cloak! I can't find the ship list I had to see if the Type 3 was campaign ratified though!

I limited the number built to reflect the more limited Romulan economy, and to be similar to the numbers of Klingon FU-12's. Plus, as we discussed on the old forum, these ships CAN be outfought despite their missile biased armament, so they haven't become the be all and end all of combat vessels.

As I said before, I'm still trying to find the design sheet for this vessel, so the main stats are from my Ship Displays, hence not all the other stats are shown above (tonnage, cargo, transporters etc). I'll update them if I find the design sheet. The basics are there though if anyone wishes to fly any of the variants. Enjoy!

You could get blister packs with just decal sheets in them, which is where I got this one from. I'd have to dig them out, but the twin headed eagle came in white (my other Firehawk mini has one) and I think they also came in blue and green as well? Also got some skull inspired ones for my Orion vessels, which you'll see when I get round to posting more Orion mini pics.

Notes for the manual

Recently, data thought corrupted in the "Project Grey Ghost" intelligence archives has been partially recovered to reveal the possible existence of another heavy battlecruiser design in the Romulan Fleet. Although the data recovery is incomplete, there is enough present for tactical analysis.

Coded named Phoenix by Starfleet Intelligence, the data indicates a design that seems to fit between the V-30 Winged Defender and Z-1 Nova classes in capabilities. The dimensions show a huge vessel larger than the V-30 however, and some analysts believe this may have been a competing design for the Battleship designation filled by the Nova class.

Also, recent activity at the region of the Triangle where the Klingon and Romulan borders meet has seen a sighting of a new large Romulan design, which may indeed be the Phoenix class. Only one lone passive scan exists however, which was primarily visual in nature, and not complemented by detailed active sensor scans. The visual shows a design with an unusual over the hull wing assembly, with the usual "Bird of Prey" House emblem prominately displayed (see above).

As always, Intelligence resources are being diverted to try and gain further information on this elusive design, and to confirm whether this is indeed the Phoenix class, or another, unknown design.

My Thoughts

As said in the Modelling thread, this mini was scratchbuilt by my friend David, and he traded it to me with a couple of others many years ago for some SFB material that wasn't currently available back then (the first version of the Megahex counters sets).

As this was made in the early 90's, David was probably influenced by the TNG D'Deridex design, and I think it foreshadows that design nicely. Cool mini, eh?

I typed up the Manual info based on the fact I had forgotten I had this model, and had found it recently while preparing for more photos in the Modelling thread!

Back story for Manual

The current 'cold war' state of affairs between the Federation and her interstellar neighbours can be uncertain and unnerving. Machinations behind the scenes can play out with all the complexity of a three dimensional chess match or a game of klin'za. And in these uncertain times, new developments can come from unexpected places.

Recently declassified information has just been forwarded to the attention of Starfleet Command which is of great concern. On Stardate 2/2503.11, Intelligence operatives came into possession of data that indicated a new type of surveillance vessel was now operating in the Romulan Star Navy.

The vessel bore a striking similarity in certain aspects to a scout vessel within Starfleet that Intelligence R&D had developed into a deep-space surveillance vessel, namely the Carrera class scout.

The new vessel, now designated as the S-14 class scout, seems to have a similar sensor sail array system that is present on the Carrera Mk.II model. Intelligence assets are trying to determine whether this is a case of parallel development, or espionage. The possibility also exists that the Mk.II design, exclusively operated under our purview, may actually have been covertly observed while on station. Does this indicate a design flaw, or improved Romulan detection methods?

It is unknown at this time whether it has superior sensor range to its Starfleet counterpart. The information gained by Intelligence operatives did not include such details. The data did include visual scans however. As well as the main sensor sail, there seem to be smaller secondary arrays on both port and starboard wing tips.

Starfleet Command and Starfleet Intelligence are understandably worried about this new development. As always, all Intelligence desks have been tasked with gaining further information about the new class.

The vessels' tactical data indicates that the basic power systems of the S-11 scout have been used in this design, yet again showing the efficient use of technology by the Star Navy. The S-14 Type 1 has similar armaments to the Carrera class, namely a small disruptor loadout, but has torpedoes bearing forward and aft. Defensive capabilities are similar too, but with a heavier superstructure. It also has the advantage of a cloaking device, which of course would aid such a vessel in its surveillance duties. It is believed to be operated by the Romulans on their Federation border.

The data acquired further indicates that two heavier armed versions exist, used on other borders/regions. The type 2 is believed to have been used by the Romulans within the Triangle, possibly as far as the Klingon border, but this is still to be confirmed. The data for the Type 3, the heaviest armed with the long ranged RB-9 disruptors, is the most unreliable, but states that it is used on the far side of Romulan space, nearest the Klingon/Kinshaya border! The heavier weapons load is believed to be intended to deliver an initial large punch if detected, allowing the vessel to then run at high warp from the attacking vessel, whether Klingon or Kinshaya.

Although this does not directly concern Intelligence (if true) given the distance to that region from Federation space, the fact that there are three variants is concerning, given the smaller resources available to the Star Empire. Obviously however, this new vessel type shows that the Empire is still diligent in gaining advantage over its neighbours, and is using their technologies, new or otherwise, to their best advantage.

ALL Starfleet border command assets with relevant security clearance have been informed on a need to know basis of this development, in case of surveillance attempts within Federation Space away from the Neutral Zone border.

The name Little Seeker is believed to come from the Romulan galan'al, named after a small keen sighted avian marsh predator from the southern temperate regions of Romulus mentioned in the Eridam Papers. This seems appropriate considering its perceived mission profile.

My Designers Notes

Here's how this design came about.

In the thread named "Science thread!" in the "Life, the Universe, and Everything " sub-board, people were talking about dinosaur tail spikes. brickwall then mentioned atolm should design a ship based on the pic showing the end of the tail, as it reminded him of a Federation design. When he remembered it was the Intelligence ship of the FASA Intelligence Manual, I pointed towards my version of the ship. brickwall then thought we should have a Klingon or Romulan design with such spikes. So here's the Romulan version!

I came up with this design after I saw these two minis for sale on eBay last week, and bought them. I've shown the Corsair mini before, in my minis thread, but had forgotten it had the tail main fin and small fins on the wingtips (that original mini pic didn't use them). The fins are now reflected in the ship description as a variation on the single sensor sail on my Carrera design.
