And now, the Klingons! The Klingons have their own distinct style, with a command boom forward and wings, but I tended to find you have a bit more choice using other manufacturers minis, as you will see below. Citadel (FASA) Klingon D-7 Class Cruiser and Romulan V-11 Stormbird Class CruiserFirst up, the classic and iconic D-7 class. Here we have two Citadel (FASA) minis, one in Klingon colours, and one in Romulan colours. The BOP on the Stormbird is a Games Workshop transfer (twin headed eagle of the "Imperium of Man" from Warhammer 40,000). Obviously, FASA followed series canon with the Romulans having D-7's as well! A close up shot of the D-7, because it's just that damn cool a design! And in the interests of fairness, a close up shot on the V-11 Stormbird, because it looks cool in Romulan colours as well! I think after the original Matt Jeffries design for the Constitution Class Enterprise NCC-1701, his design for this is probably everybodys next favorite, maybe even their most favorite! (For me, it's my favorite on Monday, Wednesday and Friday!)

Citadel (FASA) Klingon D-7 Cruiser and FASA D-10 Riskadh Class CruiserOne of my favorite FASA interpretations of Klingon design philosophy. Take a D-7, and pump it full of steroids! Some people may not like this, but in my eyes, it screams "look out, Federation scum, we mean even more business in this m*therf*cker!" It's definitely a cool ship to play. Here we see it next to a D-7 for comparison. Citadel (FASA) Klingon D-7 Cruiser and FASA L-9 Saber Class FrigateAnother nice interpretation of Klingon aesthetics. It may not have the same command boom style, but it still looks Klingon to me. Another cool ship to play, and a cool mini to have if you can get your hands on one. The boom is a bit thinner than the D-7 or D-10 minis, but with care, you will find yourself with a fine model to promote the power of the Empire! Klingon K-22 Scout (f), D-32 Cruiser (l) and L-42 Frigate (r) Birds of Prey!!!Ok, here it is, the mini that causes so many modeling headaches! FASA were first to start scaling up the Bird of Prey design from STIII, WAY before TNG started to mess with our minds with B'rel and K'vort classes! (In fairness though, that design seems to vary in size from scene to scene in STIII, let alone from TOS movie to movie!) The minis are from Studio Bergstrom for the small K-22 (I think), a SFB F5 frigate (SL2200 original sculpt) for the D-32, and the Citadel version of the FASA mini for the L-42. Again, the Citadel mini, like the Enterprise class seen in the Federation pictures, is a little bit chunkier than the FASA mini, which has separate parts for the boom and the wingtip disruptors, and is correspondingly more fragile. Today, if you ordered a F5 frigate from ADB, they have upscaled the mini by about 25%, which will look a bit better size wise between the Bergstrom and FASA minis. And here's a second picture, showing the relative sizes a little bit better, with the K-22 and F-5 minis in front of the much larger L-42. Citadel (FASA) Klingon D-7 Cruiser and ADB F-5 as Klingon D-32 CruiserA comparison with the D-7 with the ADB F-5 to show how the D-32 z'gavva ( Stronger Bird) Class cruiser would look next to a D-7. Works for me!

Citadel (FASA) Klingon D-7 Class Cruiser and FASA D-2 Stingtongue Class Missile DestroyerFirst of all, on the right, we have the D-2 Stingtongue, another nice Klingon design from FASA. Although it is one of the most messed up official ships stats wise (try and design it legally per the Klingon SRM!), its still a cool design. As it shows next to the classic D-7 design! Klingon D-14 Stinger Class Destroyer kitbash and FASA D-2 Stingtongue Class Missile DestroyerHere we have a simple kitbash for people to try, next to the FASA D-2 mini. For the D-14 Stinger Class Destroyer, here's what to do. Simply chop off the wingtips and nacelles from a D-2 mini, and glue underneath! A slightly different paint job, and voila! A D-14 destroyer! Enough of a lookalike to the SRM pics, I think! Klingon D-14 Stinger Class Destroyer kitbash and FASA L-9 Sabre Class FrigateA quick comparison of the D-14 kitbash next to a FASA L-9 Sabre Frigate. Citadel (FASA) D-7 Class Cruiser and Citadel (FASA) D-18 Gull Class Destroyer FASA came up with the D-18 Class Destroyer, which although is quite a 'chunky' design, still looks Klingon. Here we see it next to the D-7 again. Personally, I like this little brute, even if we thought the official stats are a little bit 'meh'. When we upgraded it, we added a forward torpedo onto it to compensate for the official design only having an aft torpedo in the D-18C model! (Since then, I've noted that Brad did just the same when he designed upgraded versions of this little monster.)

Citadel (FASA) D-7 Cruiser and Silent Death Strata (originally called Salamander)Here we have another manufacturers minis standing in for Klingons. I imagined the Silent Death mini as a small, single nacelled Klingon scout or destroyer. The cockpit works as the Klingon command bridge! This is the original sculpt of the Salamander mini, now called Strata. Silent Death Predator as Klingon K-11 Star Raven and Romulan V-22 Ravenkiller (mini originally called Star Raven)Here's another Silent Death mini, so cool two sides in our gaming Group wanted to use it. As I said in my Klingon and Romulan stats pages, one of our Klingon players called dibs on the Predator, and designed stats for it. I then designed the V-22 to deal with him! Stars for K-11 are on this page here... ststcsolda.proboards.com/post/711/threadStats for V-22 Ravenkiller are on this page... ststcsolda.proboards.com/post/712/threadCitadel (FASA) V-11 (D-7) Cruiser and Silent Death PredatorHere's an additional picture showing the Citadel mini next to the Silent Death mini in Romulan colours for a size comparison. Obviously styled on the FASA minis, the Kumerian fits in perfectly, as shown in the picture with the D-2. (I need to strip that paintjob back and start again!) Some more FASA and ADB comparison shots. Citadel (FASA) D-7 Cruiser and ADB SL2200 Klingon C-8 Dreadnaught ClassFor bigger vessels, or if you want to start messing about with stats for three engined starships, you need the minis to go with them. Here is a C-8 Dreadnought from SFB's old SL2200 range compared to a Citadel D-7 cruiser. Incoming, Federation cowards! Run away! And here's another couple of shots of the C-8 on its own.

Now for some comparisons between FASA and Micromachines Klingons. Citadel (FASA) D-7 Cruiser and Micromachines D-7 CruiserOkay, first up, you can see that the Micromachines D-7 is a bit bigger than the Citadel one. But it's obvious that it can't be anything else, so if you can't get hold of any FASA minis, or they are too expensive on eBay, you may be able to get hold of the Micromachines one. Just a few weeks ago (October 2012), I got hold of a few Micromachines minis on eBay for a few GBP each, including two D-7s, so they can still be found quite easily. And here's a comparison shot of the FASA D-7, the MM one, and the FASA D-10... ...which shows that although the MM D-7 is larger, it doesn't dwarf the FASA D-10. So it can easily be mixed and matched with FASA minis in my book. Citadel (FASA) L-42 Great Bird and Micromachines Klingon Bird of PreyAlthough the MM Bird of Prey is a little larger than the Citadel one, it's doesn't seem quite as noticable as the size difference between the D-7 minis. You could maybe even used a Citadel one as a D-32 and a MM one as a L-42, although I think the Bird of Prey photos I used here... ...shows a better size difference between the three different FASA classes of vessel. The lurid green needs repainting maybe, but there are a few different paintjobs on this mini, including a nicer one which is more accurate (its meant to be the HMS Bounty fron Star Trek IV). Again, more than usable in my eyes.

Citadel (FASA) D-7 and scratchbuilt Klingon CruiserAnother little scratchbuilt Klingon design from my friend David. Made from foamboard, it may be simple, but I like it, He traded this and a couple of other minis with me for a SFB Megahex counter set I had at the time (mid-90's). I'll show you a couple more of his scratchbuilds later in this thread.

Ok, enough's enough, time to get this thread back on the road... ..."The Road to the Stars" that is! So now, protecting their Star Empire, the Romulans! As before, the Romulans have their distinct design style in FASA, the later models resembling giant birds! But if you take the more normal designs, you CAN use other models which fit their style I think as you'll see below. Citadel (FASA) V-11 Stormbird and SFB SL2300(?) War Eagle as V-8 Bird of PreyFirst of all, the two classic 'canon' designs see on screen in TOS. Using the FASA D7 model, of course, but I used the SFB SL2300(?) for the V8 Bird of Prey. The reason for this is as follows. I think that the FASA mini shown below with the SFB one... FASA Romulan V-8 Bird of Prey and SFB War Eagle Bird of Prey...is too big in comparison to the Constitution mini, it's definitely too big if you use the Romulan size stats from the Romulan SRM. I prefer the scale of the SFB miniature. It seems to fit in with the idea shown onscreen in "Balance of Terror" of a small cramped vessel (remember the bridge scenes, a small cramped control room compared to the Enterprise bridge?). Therefore, I use the SFB SL2300 mini. The original SFB SL2200 mini used to be smaller than that, and since I got this (late 90's?), I believe ADB released another mini for it for the SL2400 range. Not too sure what size that mini might be. And of course, the current new SL2500 mini will be bigger again because of the new scale of 1/3125. By the way... SFB War Eagle Bird of Prey with BoP underside emblem...yes, I'm insane enough to handpaint the original TOS Bird of Prey emblem!!! (Actually quite chuffed with that one!) More pics and thoughts to come soon.

Aerotech Stuka (!) and FASA D-2 StingtongueAerotech Stuka upside down (L) and right way up (R)!Here's my first cheat for the Romulans using the Aerotech Stuka model for a modern Romulan destroyer! I just thought it looked cool that way in comparison to the FASA D-2 mini, and flipped the model upside down (see second pic above) to hide the domed cockpit! The underneath air intake looks like the grill on the top of the FASA D-7 and V-11 anyway. A few hints of feathers in a geometric design on the wings, and voila! Aerotech Stuka closeupCitadel (FASA) V-11 Stormbird and Aerotech Stuka comparison picAnd a comparison shot with the V-11 Stormbird. I remember on the original thread on the old board that swede used the Stuka mini for a Klingon ship, and jeffwright wondering what the mini would look like with Klingon BoP style disruptors on the front wings! I suppose you could use the right way up to represent the Klingon vessel! Because we mentioned this, meteo created stats for a Romulan and Klingon variant! By the way, meteo, if you want to re-post those stats, could you keep them to your Klingon and Romulan sections please? I want to keep this thread for mini pics and thoughts on substitutes. If you want to link to the pics, feel free to do so. Mark

More Romulan starships for your perusal and enjoyment! Romulan S-11 and V-24 Birds of Prey! Here again, we see the old SFB SL2200 sculpt F5 mini in Romulan colours, this time representing the FASA S-11 Bird of Prey scout. I didn't have enough of the Studio Bergstrom minis at hand that I had for Klingon K-22's to use as S-11's. The Citadel version of the L-42 is here representing the Romulan V-24 Great Bird cruiser from Stardate magazine. Yup, more reuses of the BoP design! But the back story made sense in relation to the FASA background (Romulan honour wounded by the Klingons designing the K-22 from Romulan supplied hulls and then upscaling it twice for the D-32 and L-42 designs). EDIT: Here's two close up pics of my V-24 Bird of Prey mini... FASA V-7 Whitewind and Aerotech Shilone as VU-2 Firehawk missile cruiserAlongside the FASA Whitewind, you see another of my Aerotech cheats. Similar in lines to the Whitewind (wide and flat), flying a Shilone mini upside down gives you a FASA Romulan lookalike again! It works for me. EDIT: Here's a couple of closeups of the Whitewind mini... FASA Whitewind mini closeupsYou can see my stats for the Shilone as the VU-2 Firehawk missile cruiser here (go to reply #6)... ststcsolda.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ststcsoldashipsetc&action=display&thread=22And here's a comparison shot with the FASA V-11 mini... V-11 Stormbird Cruiser and VU-2 Firehawk Missile CruiserAnd because I like the paintjob, here's a close up of the Shilone, just because I think it's cool! Modest, aren't I? (The BoP emblem is another Warhammer 'Imperium of Man' transfer). VU-2 Firehawk missile cruiser closeup

Aerotech Corsair and SamuryiTo give our gaming group models to go with all of the new designs we created, here are two more Aerotech designs serving in the Star Navy. A bit clunky compared to the FASA designs, perhaps, but using the more ususual Aerotech designs, such as these and the Shilone above, gives you more variety. I think that the Corsair on the left has a bit of similarity to the K-22/S-11 style Bird of Prey design myself. The more unusual designs could be rationalized as either older designs, lower tech used by smaller shipyards, or just because the design esthetic of birds that seems hardwired into the Romulan psyche is just that strong! Silent Death Predator and Samurai (originally called Revenge) Another manufacturer to use for vessels representing the Romulans, just as the Silent Death Strata was used for the Klingons. These two are just very cool as modern Romulan cruisers, I think. Klingon K-11 Star Raven and Romulan V-22 Ravenkiller! As mentioned before in my Klingon and Romulan ship stats sections, myself and another player called dibs on the cool Predator mini for the Romulans and Klingons. So below for your enjoyment and gaming pleasure are the links to the stats for the Romulan and Klingon versions of the Star Raven. Here for the V-22 (reply#1)... ststcsolda.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ststcsoldashipsetc&action=display&thread=22...and here for the K-11 (reply #4)... ststcsolda.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ststcsoldashipsetc&action=display&thread=21EDIT: Here's a comparison shot with the V-11 Stormbird and the Ravenkiller...

FASA/Citidel had better detail, but the SFB minis modified the Cobra pods of Klingon ships well, giving them extra terraces if you will--rather like Japan's ships from WWII
That should have been done with larger federation ships, making a bridge complex look a little more like the complex at the top of spacedock as the sizes go up.

jeffwrightThat was one thing that I DON"T like about the SFB Klingon minis! Maybe if they had more domes than the D-7, on a wider cobra head? The C-8/9 dreadnought mini as it stands sort of works, but I think that it went overboard with the B-10 battleship mini! I even made that suggestion about modifying the DN and BB when they were designing the new SL2500 minis over on the ADB Discussion board. Wasn't taken onboard unfortunately. Never mind. More pics to come soon, by the way. Mark

Some more minis for Romulan use. Ok, in SFB game history, the Romulans use three types of hulls. The old Eagle classes, that look like variants of the "Balance of Terror" vessel, in other words the FASA V-8 Bird of Prey. Then there are bought Klingon hulls like the D-7 style and F-5 style for intermediate building up of their fleet and the modern 'modular' Hawk classes. Here are a few photos of the basics to show you what you can use. ADB SL2200 Skywawk Class Destroyer(?) and Seahawk Class FrigateThe smallest of the modular designs, there is supposed to be a large section of that rear hull that is replacable for different variants at a shipyard with a few weeks work. These are supposed to be influenced by Klingon design, hence the forward booms and the wings instead of the teardrop saucer and wings/nacelles of the V-8 style. I think these two are a bit too simple and similar in design myself, although maybe they would look cooler with some of of Bird of Prey emblem on top? The Skyhawk sort of works, but the Seahawk looks a bit too stubby. (Remember, SFB frigates are the smallest mainline fleet vessels, not like the troop carrying cruiser sized FASA frigates). Still, more mini designs for you to use if you so desire! ADB SL2200 Sparrowhawk Class Light Cruiser and Skyhawk Class Destroyer(?)The larger SFB modular Hawks in the Star Fleet game universe seem to take the whole 'use a similar hull to make more variants' theme too far in my book. As far as I understand it, starting with the three nacelles shown here on the Sparrowhawk, you can have basically the same hull with four nacelles, with varying larger weapon loads and names (Royalhawk, Regalhawk etc). There might even be a six(!) nacelled variant (Megahawk?), unless that is conjectural, or just people kitbashing out munchkin ships! Yes, I know these type of ships are 'modular', but I think they took it WAY beyond sensible! And yet I like the original Sparrowhawk design! You can even see how it almost starts to predict the TNG D'Deridex design, with that forward hull, about five years or more before that design showed up on screen. I just like the model! In the new SL2500 minis, they even modified the design with a wider stance that just makes it look even cooler. But the larger scale is out of proportion to the FASA scale. Have a look over on the ADB Discussion BBS if you want to see pics of the new design. Meanwhile, for our FASA use, just sit back and enjoy the pics. Here's a close up of the Sparrowhawk cos I like it! ADB SL2200 Sparrowhawk Class Light CruiserThe above pics are my old SL2200 versions, there are newer SL2400 versions for sale at the ADB Starfleetgames website... store.starfleetstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=S&Category_Code=14EDIT: Finally, here's a comparison shot of the Sparrowhawk with the SL2300(?) mini I use for the FASA V-8 Bird of Prey...
