I had taken a close look at the D7 for the "Ships of Axanar" project and the K't'inga for TNG Klingon SRM. Recently, I looked at comparing them very closely and decided to present my thoughts and reasons for reworking these ships to better conform with WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) and ensure that they relate to each other in ways that made sense (to me - at least).
While FASA lumped these two ships into a single category - one simply being a further extension of the other, in "reality", the differences between the two ships are quite striking and significant. So much so, that making them essentially the same is an injustice.
The most significant difference between the two ships is the size. The D7 is 228 meters long and the K't'inga is just 214 meters long. This may not seem significant until you also consider that both the primary and secondary hulls of the K't'inga are smaller and more compact than the those of the D7.
Then there are the warp engines - the K't'inga's engines are longer and more slender than the ones found on the D7. For the purposes of WYSIWYG, the K't'inga should be fitted with completely different engines than fitted to the D7 and its overall mass should be less as well. We can (and should) also assume that the K't'inga is more advanced/improved than its older counterpart.
Within the confines of the construction rules I decided to fit the D7 with KWE-series engines from its inception (it bothers me to see ships in the SRMs with mass that fluctuates wildly while remaining basically the same in appearance and dimensions) to keep its mass up and then the K't'inga would be fitted with the more compact and more advanced KWF-series engines. With a savings of 20,000 tons in mass, I would have a lot of room to make improvements without having to worry about going overweight.
First up is my D-7A from the "Ships of Axanar" project. Unlike FASA's warship, this one is equipped with the KWE-2 warp nacelles along with the KIC-2 impulse engine. Power and maneuverability remain unchanged from original ship, but the ship is now a Class IX vessel. To compensate for the additional mass, the shield generator is now the KSE - giving it identical protection to the original D7A. Another significant change I made was the addition of the KP-2 photon torpedo firing forward. We learn from "Enterprise" that the Klingons are early employers of photon torpedo technology and we have seen the D7 fire such a weapon in TOS. The final design is largely identical to FASA's except for its mass and the addition of a photon torpedo.

Next up is the K't'inga as it has appeared in TMP and sequels.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, an engine overhaul was warranted to achieve the end goal of constructing a smaller, more capable warship in the K't'inga. It is equipped with the KWF-1 warp engines coupled to a KIE-2 impulse engine. Like the D7A above, the power plant is quite different but the overall power and maneuverability remain the same.
One significant change I made to the K't'inga was in its torpedo armament. FASA's version is equipped with a single KP-3 torpedo firing forward and a second one firing aft - to reflect the ability to do so as portrayed in the first movie. However, this is not entirely accurate. While we saw the K't'inga fire a single torpedo aft, it was able to fire three forward in quick succession - in about the same amount of time the Enterprise could fire two. I was originally going to equip it with four KP-5 torpedoes to represent this trait more accurately. But....when you add to this that the K't'inga could challenge the Excelsior (to the point of raising concerns with Captain Sulu) and add to this that the Chancellor's flagship is a K't'inga as well, then it seems justifiable to more accurately represent this in the ship's game performance by retaining the KP-3. This moves it from an "average" ship to one that is more formidable. It can project 45 points of damage forward with its torpedoes compared the Enterprise being able to project 40 points. When you consider that the Klingon ship has to spend four more power points to get those 5 extra damage points....it doesn't seem so drastic. Therefore, my version of the K't'inga A is equipped with three KP-3 torpedoes firing forward and one firing to the rear (given the desperate situation the last K't'inga was in, it seems logical if it was capable of launching more torpedoes to the rear then it would have). This additional firepower really makes the K't'inga a formidable opponent - as it should. It is produced in great numbers and it should reflect the Klingon's infatuation with this ship.
I didn't want my version of the K't'inga to come out too light in mass, so (like FASA did with the D7A) I added some extra superstructure to the vessel. Given that it should be better protected than the older ship, it felt justified as well.
The most significant differences in performance are the addition of two more torpedoes firing forward and a total of 25 superstructure points - yet it is smaller than the D7.

Next up is my interpretation of FASA's D7S. This ship adds two more KD-8 disruptors and upgrades the KP-3 torpedoes to KP-4s. My ship is no different. However, Unlike FASA's variant, mine does not go overweight (FASA's D7S actually builds out to a Class X warship when you follow the design rules). Even with the extra superstructure and weapons, my version stays well within Class IX thanks to its KWF-1 engines. I think that Kronos One would make a good candidate as an early production model of this sub-class:

Note: Further upgrades of the K't'inga to carry it into TNG can be found in TNG Klingon SRM.
After designing these ships, I then went back to the D-7A and started working on progressive updates of this design that would ultimately lead to the development of the K't'inga. I was literally just "filling in the blank". At some point, the Klingons move from classifying their ships with alphanumeric designations (D5, D6, D7) to a naming convention (K't'inga, K'vort, Brel, Vor'cha, etc.) so I scavenged up a name for these later models of the D7 from Star Trek trivia just for fun. The first upgrade version replaces its single KP-2 torpedo for a single KP-3 and adds a fifth disruptor to protect the aft portion of the ship. The shield generator is also upgraded to one with a binary transducer:

The final upgrade of the D7 class is (almost verbatim) the D7M from the ship recognition manual. As a highly militant race, the Klingons would invest a lot more in upgrading existing ships (since it is faster and more economical) than FASA implies. Following the introduction of the K't'inga, the Klingons would be looking to incorporate as much of this new technology as they could into upgrading the similar D7 design. It is seen below:

As an added bonus, I reworked my K'teremny Class Destroyer ideas to fit within this revised design progression. Using the lighter engines, I was able to keep it from going overweight as well. The K'teremny is described as a K't'inga redesigned for the role of destroyer. It uses the same engines and the same type of disruptors - but adds two more. I changed the torpedo systems to be the KP-5 - for one, the illustration of the K'teremny shows a torpedo port that is smaller and more oval than on the K't'inga (even though the article describes it as being identical) and second, all official destroyers in FASA's SRMs are equipped with torpedoes that inflict 10 points of damage or less and I kept the number of torpedoes at two so that it did not massively overshadow other destroyers in firepower. The shields are described as providing better protection in some areas with a seemingly random pattern to the deflector plating. To represent this, I went with the KSN shield system. It provides better protection than the KSK system, but with a less efficient transducer:
