To be fair - heavier than air flight had only been around ~11 years when WWI started up so... It's actually quite amazing to look at the progress aviation made during that war, and then how little it seemed to make for the next 15 or so years after it!

I remember watching this russian historical documentary on their side of WW 2 secret developments. One thing they tried to do was build a plane/tank LOL that could fly and land and take off. The documentary though never said if it got far in development lol I'd imagine such a design in the 40s likely was a flop if it ever did reach prototype off paper stage

The Antanov An-40! A masterpiece of optimism. The russians also made a fixed gear, biplane, jet... If it's weird, it's probably French. If it's ugly, it's probably British. If it's ugly AND weird, it's Russian.

Sorry - the Buccaneer is no more ugly than the F-4 Phantom...

Yes it is. Even the Brits figured it out after a while and bought Phantoms.

Good Gravy! A Rocket-powered flying tank?! That is either real-life Ruskie-tech, or a cool Japanese anime.

Good Gravy! A Rocket-powered flying tank?! That is either real-life Ruskie-tech, or a cool Japanese anime. I know right?! Wish i could find that documentary i watched it was in russian with english subtitles, seems it gone into the ether of the internet though :\ From what I recall like i said it had two single use rockets that launched it up, then the tank engine took over with a pair of props for flight it was ungainly as fuck obviously but it supposedly did fly i think, then when it got to the combat zone the idea was it'd land detach the plan and prop pieces (supposedly to be recovered for reuse by troops later) then roll out for battle. I think the tank used was a stripped down lighter tank pretty useless in combat vs the germans as I recalled I think it was using the BT-2

And the Brits strike again... but in a wonderfully weird way. And then, this. A truly stunning Brit Fighter concept

▲▲▲ I know! It's like a P-51 and a Spitfire had a love-child.
And dig those counter-rotating propellers!
I don't know if it's a comment on their aircraft, but Martin-Baker went on to build ejection seats...

Yep - another cool British "aeroplane" that is NOT ugly! Contra-rotating props are still under consideration for a variety of uses. They have their faults (mechanical complexity, extra weight etc...) but, are more efficient than a single prop, if applied properly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra-rotating_propellers

The old Edgely Optica is futuristic looking.
What was the airplane under the Buccaneer, Ironerd? I love all these pre-Stealth airplanes.
stealth just ruined the looks of airplanes for me

OOohhh.... the Optica... Goofy-cool looking old plane. The two-seat, Twin-boom jet is a de Haviland Sea Vixen. And Stealth airplanes ARE ugly. Even the F-22 is an ugly beast. But it's better than "Tacit Blue"
