Ah, the classic Mark I Viper. So cool. And I love the Glen Larson Buck Rodgers Starfighter influence on the Taipan class! Didn't realise/remember the Buck Rodgers fighter was the Thunderfighter class. Was that name officially mentioned onscreen in the show? buckrogers.fandom.com/wiki/ThunderfighterAlso didn't know it was an original proposed design for the Colonial Viper, and repurposed for Buck Rodgers! (Scroll down to the "Behind the scenes" section). snubfighter.fandom.com/wiki/Viper_(BG:TOS)

The main fighter in the Colonial Fleet at the time of the nuke strike on the Colonies: the Viper Mk. VII was highly advanced pierce of kit, but this was also the problem with it...its network capability lead to destruction of all most all of the type...

Without meaning to derail the thread the Mk.VII looks like a TMP version of the Mk.I Viper. Same basic design, but sleeker! I never got into nuBSG, so presumably the network capability is a story point on the series?

I never got into nuBSG, so presumably the network capability is a story point on the series? SPOILER Yes, the networking and and advanced computers, were turned against the Colonial Fleet in this version of BSG. The Cylons were able to place a virus into the code of a program that was put into use by the fleet. The CNP (Command Navigation Program). This was a program that allowed the fleet to respond faster to orders (the command portion), calcilate jump points with more accuracy (navigation). When the Cylons launched the attack on the Colonies and the Colonial Fleet...they were just simply able to turn off the ships. The "Old Girl" the Galactica was a 47 year old ship that was going into retirement. She was from the first Cylon War era, so she had computers that were will getting past the prime, and her skipper, Commander William Adama, a veteran, of the first Cylon war, refused to have his ship networked, so the CNP had not been installed in her computer banks. So the Cylons, when they found her, weren't able to cause malfunctions. That is how she survived the disaster that the Twelve Colonies suffered.

And, yes all the Vipers here are an evolution of the preceding types. More advanced version of a class of ships that started from a Caprican Air Force fighter that was designed before Articles of Colonization was started. So yes they all show similar characteristics to each other...sort of a if it ain't broke, don't fix, just improve it approach...lol.
Sort of the same approuch the USAF, has taken with the F-16 (That pilots have taken to calling the Viper) and the F-15.

To compare... Viper Mk.VII Viper Mk.II Bonus-------- Better view of a Taipan... Cool Is the Taipan still a one pilot fighter? Just trying to see comparing cockpit sizes if it's a bit bigger than both Viper types per that. Or just because its a heavy fighter, it IS bigger.

The Taipan is bigger...It has to use the big landing bays to take off and land, It can't go down the fast deployment tubes like the Vipers can. when you see them with a Raptor you just see how big they really are...

A better picture of the Raptor and the Assault Raptor

Hmmmmm that is funny I have never taken a screenshot of a Taipan and Assault Raptor together. When i deploy the heavy fighters I use group them together with the Assault Raptor to take advantage of the ESM those Assault Raptors can give for better target solutions. These heavies tend to work well in the same attack groups. Good ships the both of them...once you learn how to fight them....

Now for the Taipan, the stats in the blueprints for the ship....says that she is a single seat heavy fighter...for use against capital ships with her guns...
that isn't exactly how it said it, but that is what it boils down to...I bet she is bitch to fly...being that big...I don't think you could talk a Viper pilot into flying that thing...they even don't like the Raptor...they call that one a "bus".

You know, they are suppose to be putting together another BSG series set in the nuBSG universe. We had the exadus after the Cylon attack on the colonies in the mini-series and series. We had the pre First Cylon War during the short lived Caprica...
I think it would be wonderful if we had a series that gave us a more detailed look at the 1CW. We have plenty of cannon that gives us a little look into that war. BSG:Razor tells the story of the final battle of the war...Operation Raptor Talon...
And then you have..BSG:Blood and Chrome that tells us the story of Lt. William Adama, and his first tour of duty...and it tells us about the "Ghost Fleet" of ships that were thought to be lost, but were being gathered for a covert strike on the Cylon forces.
BSG:Deadlock has been confirmed as being cannon to this universe. So we have the makings of one hell of a television series...if someone would choose to do it...

Or just because its a heavy fighter, it IS bigger. Here this screenshot finally shows you the size of the Taipan type fighter...here they are with a couple of Assault Raptors... ================= in the comparing Vipers part of this thread, I have also added a pic of the Viper Mk.I

No I haven't forgotten about the Cylons Out of all the fancy Cylon vessels introduced to BSG through the Deadlock game, this is still my favorite. The origenal Cylon Baseship/Basestar: it has been called both. "A flying killer in space." These ships are fun to play and to fight. Great for the early war, and even the rest of the war. They pack a good punch in terms of munitions and fighter squadrons as well. Again I am glad Black Lab Games paid tribute to the 1978 series! And here are those fighters. The early war Raiders (they are called Raider prototypes in the game), along with a flight of Heavy Raiders that are used for boarding enemy ships and anti-capital ship assault. Nice views of the classic Basestars. Are there other variants? Plus, didn't they go with a completely different design style for nuBSG?

Yes there are several other variants of Cylon Basestars, but the classic is my favorite

I am leaning to appreciate these support ships...I love to drop them in a task force, when i have fleet points left to fill... The Defender class support frigate is used to provide support repairs to the the light craft of the fleet. They can be used to provide repairs to Vipers and Raptors and ships of the like. They can provide marines to reinforce a ship that is being boarded, and they can provide technical support to a larger ship to increase subsystems of the ship...they also have a light combat ability in the form of being able to support a Viper squadron and help in providing flack support to the other fleet train units. The Celestra class repair/logistics ship, a highly modified civilian design, is used to provide repair to the armor of heavy fleet units, using drones, to repair battle damage, and she is also use to resupply munitions to those ships as well. Thees two ships have to be kept back in a safe area of the battlespace or stay under the guns of fleet units, but they can be very much a force multiplier.

Obviously, the front of the Defender class frigate looks Colonial, but I'm sure I've seen a physical gaming mini similar to that design. I just can't remember where! I was wondering if anyone else here is involved in this game....I do like multi-player fights!!! Sorry, nope. I have enough trouble getting some time to play offline games on my Xbox 360!
