V-40 “Night Terror” Class XI CruiserFor many years, the Romulans tried to upgrade and adapt their popular V-9 “Night Flyer” cruiser to carry the RPL-2 plasma weapon. The V-9, popular because of its twin plasma weapons, was simply not up to the task of carrying two of the massive weapons. After many false starts and scrapped ideas, the Romulan engineers decided that a whole new vessel, designed from the keel up, was the only solution to the chartered task of building a vessel capable of supporting twin RPL-2 units that could still be cloaked under current technology. Several teams were given this task and each went in different directions. One group wound up producing the devastating V-31 variant of the V-30 “Winged Defender”, dubbed “Death Stalker”. Another abandoned the twin RPL-2 concept in favour of a quick strike and fade destroyer design reminiscent of the V-8 called the T-13 “Night Fury”. The third successful team produced the V-40 “Night Terror” cruiser seen above. The V-40 is lighter than the V-31 and thus is able to use the RCD cloaking device, which is more efficient and uses less power. The V-40 also uses tried and true systems that are readily available throughout the Star Empire, giving the Night Terror a much greater operating range. The heart of the V-40 is the same as its progenitor, the V-9. Two of the massive RPL-2 plasma weapons take up nearly 45 percent of the forward hull. The tremendous amount of space taken up by the plasma weapons forced the forward beam weapons into a unique configuration. They act like a banked system, however they are not a true banked weapon. Mounted to the outer edges of the trailing hull, they are synchronized through the same targeting array. While an efficient solution, it restricts the arc to the forward of the ship. Two sets of standard banked beams cover the sides and the aft of the ship. The layout of the weapons is very reminiscent of the Federations Northampton class frigate, a vessel the V-40 bears a passing resemblance to. The Romulan design team that drafted the V-40 was forced to revisit the teardrop design seen in early Romulan vessels because of the space taken up by the plasma weapons. The newer, bird-like designs that had come out in the past decade couldn’t be adapted to the wide stance the side-by-side plasma configuration created. They did, however, adapt the “close together” nacelle concept they had seen in several Federation designs. The Romulans saw the advantage of adding a bit of protection to the primary propulsion units, however the power conduits required to make this adaptation possible are still vulnerable to disabling. Since the two prototypes were launched in 2/2808, the Romulans have built 25 ships in the past five years. Projected numbers estimate that this rate will slow to two vessels a year now that the Romulan/Gorn conflict seems to be over. Several of these vessels saw action on that front, surprising the Gorn. Rumour has it that one of these vessels is responsible for destroying a BH-2 in a surprise attack. CONSTRUCTION DATA Model Number: Type 1 Date Entering Service: 2/2808. ...Fairly nifty Romulan Design, I designed one with two forward RPL-2s, and a large, forward 'beak' section. And the power systems aren't as good as on this one, good nacelle placement, average 1X Hull, and strong shields.

T-13 Type 1 "Night Fury"Known Sphere of InfluenceEmpire wide Data Reliability: E A radical departure from normal Romulan ship design, the Nightfury is meant to be a quick-strike vessel centered around a single weapon, the RPL-3. The engines are exceptionally powerful, and the unique hull design is meant to push them to the limit in both warp and sublight capablilty. The Nightfury's engines produce enough power to allow it to both cloak, power it's main weapon and still have enough left over to give it considerable mobility. In fact, a common tactic for the Nightfury has been to close slowly under cloak, decloak to fire, then suddenly re-cloak, using the plasma bolt it just launched as a screen to change course and use it's considerable movement under cloak to elude it's crippled prey. The design itself is very shallow, thus presenting a minimal target when facing the enemy, however this leaves the ship very cramped. The center mass of the ship is filled with the engineering section as well as the intermix chamber for the plasma weapon. The bridge is quite spartan, even by Romulan standards, and the design doesn't have a secondary command center. The vessels main drawback is the lack of a secondary weapon. If the Nightfury's plasma is taken out in combat, the crew is forced to either flee or try and repair the weapon while cloaked, a dangerous task while trying to hide from an enemy determined to hunt you down. The design is surprisingly cheap to produce and can be assembled very quickly. Production of the Night Fury is expected to climb, and estimated numbers put the production run at around 200 total vessels. Since the hull is very cramped and the design itself is meant to fill a specific niche in the Romulan navy, variants of it seem unlikely. Romulan V-25 T-1 “Death Fire” Missile CruiserFollowing numerous battlefield reports from frontline commanders, the Romulan Senate decided to take a closer look at several Federation vessels they had underestimated during the second Romulan conflict (my universe). One of those, the Andor class cruiser, was of particular interest to the Romulans. Its ability to deliver multiple photon torpedo strikes seemed out of character for the usually passive Federation, and the placement of launchers in the port and starboard arcs had really caught the Romulan commanders off guard. After several clandestine attempts to capture an Andor intact fail miserably, (mostly due to the usually all Andorian crews refusing to allow their premier vessel to fall into enemy hands) the Romulans began to shadow every Andor vessel that patrolled the Neutral Zone after the conflict. After a year and a half of intense scrutiny, the Romulans confidence in their ability to duplicate the success of the Andor began to take shape in a rather unique "hollow hull" design. The vessel has an open middle section, a first in Romulan construction technique, and it allows the photon torpedo launchers to have a much broader field of fire. In addition, the top and bottom hulls have a relatively thin profile, thus reducing the total target area while still being able to mount an impressive forward firing weapons load. That load is quite impressive. Two heavy long range beam weapons provide good firepower for initial strikes at long range, however, the ship is designed to close with the enemy and use its seven photon torpedo launchers to pulverize the target. Three more fixed launchers point aft, providing the V-25 with a flyby tactical advantage. While not as good range wise as the FP-7 used on the original Andor design, the RP-3 carries a larger warhead, producing more bang for the buck and is more accurate at shorter ranges. CONSTRUCTION DATA Class X Model Number: Type 1 Date Entering Service: 2/34. Several of the type 2's, fresh from refits, began showing up on the Romulan side of the Neutral Zone sporting three less torpedo launchers but carrying two of the Romulan's terrifying RPL-3 plasma weapons. The design also upgrades the beam weapons to the type-11, increasing the range but at the cost of close range accuracy. Redundant, however, since the vessel is designed to use it's massive torpedo compliment at short ranges. Coupled with the designs efficient cloak system, these vessels have a distinct first strike advantage that outclasses anything the Klingons currently have and puts even some of the Federations best designs in serious potential peril. Starfleet Intelligence operatives for the Romulan Sector indicate that the V-25's were modified as a direct result of the launching of the Chessell Class cruisers four years earlier, leading many pundits to believe that the Federation itself is fueling this arms race. Critics submit that the massive influx of unbridled design submission from all races can only result in a conflict of epic proportions. I have a large collection of minis from a myriad of games I don't play. The mini is actually a wing pod from this Necron ship... ... so I have two of them. The main hull became a custom Orion hull owned by an affluent family with a penchant for anything Egyptian (thus the pyramid motif). I added a pair of old style Federation nacelles where those wing pods were. Looks ok, but I still need to paint it.

Yeah, I never considered that, though I had no idea what you were talking about until I saw the screen shot. I remember the episode, but I rarely have the time to find stuff like that screen shot. My hope was to introduce a Romulan vessel that would bridge the gap between TOS and TNG and still be a TMP contemporary. theSwede

That cross member would look best as a Stargate Gould ship. To me, the NuBSG resurrection ship should have been Ori, and the Ori Tiara class ship with the ring looked more cylon to me.But they're both reg nuts, so...

V-31 "Death Stalker" Class XII Pocket BattleshipWhen the Romulan senate finally agreed to look into the viability of building a class of vessel capable of carrying two of the heavier plasma weapons in a similar configuration to the V-9, it was felt that several teams could approach the problem from several different angles and thus have a higher probability of success. Never would it occur to them that two of the teams would succeed so well. While one of the teams went on to develop a smaller tactical vessel that would not meet the twin plasma weapon mandate, the two other teams would and even though both ships have proven to be successeful in meeting that mandate, they took separate paths. The V-31, though started after the V-40 project, would actually launch a fully functional vessel one year earlier. Using the basic space frame of the vaunted V-30 Winged Defender, the Death Stalker bears a striking resemblance to that design. In order to fit the weapons payload however, a re-arrangement of the warp drive and the variable wing components was needed, resulting in the swept forward design as seen in this long range scan image. The warp drive now occupies the extreme rear of the vessel with the warp nacelles protruding from the rear on short pylons underneath the tail of the main hull. This tail also acts as additional cooling for the warp drive and impulse systems. Along with the twinned type 2 plasma weapons mounted forward, the new design carries four Type 3 Photon torpedo launchers designed to cover all arcs of the ship, and two banks of RB-11 heavy disruptors mounted on the wing tips, which provided excellent coverage as well.
