The more I think about this ship the more I like it. My latest thought was that the ship could have an interchangeable, mission specific, detachable pod up top. Obviously the pod up there in my model is a combat pod, but if the need arose it could exchange it for any number of other pods: research pods, colonization pods, medical relief pods, whatever.
The pods would be able to be detached on the fly in space but would require a starbase or construction yard to be attached.

Sorry forgot to include the link *facepalm* but yes i agree your's is better! I just was showing the parallel also i like the idea of a swappable mission pod I would akin this then to a precursor to the nebula!

why couldnt the pods be able to be swapped out more easily look at how simple a changeout is needed for the cargo containers and tugs and those containers are much bigger than the pods ... simply dock and lock in .... all connections are automatic for power and such even turbolift shafts can be connencted ... all that would be needed as an extra would be a docking pad of some sort and shape to fit the pods common shape ..

looks like the saucer is a bit bigger in dia too as well as rim thickness .. i kinda like it always thought the saucer rim was a bit thin one good torp blast would blow right through it kind like in ST-VI when changs cloaked BOP blasted a hole right through the saucer of the ent from below

The pylons will connect where they connect now. I think ships look silly with horizontal pylons connecting to the bottom of the nacelle. Remember, this ship is still a work in progress and has a lot of work to be done. There will be an attachment hard point added before the ship is done.
I can think of a number of methods for these pods to be interchangeable in space, but those methods would also work for re-attaching a saucer section as well. I figure that if they can't do that they probably can't re-attach a pod. Anyway, it was just speculation.
The saucer is 158 meters in diameter vs the Constitution's 142 meters. And, yes, the rim is one deck thicker.
I've always felt that without shields it would be pretty easy to pick a ship apart in most cases. I don't think that adding one extra deck thickness would make much difference.

It looks really nice! I seem to remember a ship with a thicker refit saucer like yours, but with a TNG type trench running around the saucer edge--a depression filled with sensors--planning something similar for the future--heck, you could put a dockport right under the main gangway--same as on the Dreadnought... I'd like to see you do this www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/commandcruiser_balson.jpg

The United Federation of Planets works hard to maintain an image of diplomacy and peaceful intentions. This is a laudable stance, and, in many periods, peaceful diplomatic solutions have been achieved at times when it seemed war was all but guaranteed.
However, in the decade leading up to the disaster at Praxis and the Khitomer Accords, war with the Klingons seemed inevitable. After their defeat at Axanar, the Klingon Empire had begun the buildup of a fleet of new and improved battle cruisers. Although some factions within the Klingon Empire wished for peace, most Klingons felt that the outcome of the Four Years War was an intolerable blight on an otherwise glorious record of conquest. A blight they intended to remove.
When Praxis blew the fallout threatened to render Qo'noS uninhabitable. To a race as fiercely territorial as the Klingons this was unacceptable. The silver lining of this disaster was that it offered those factions within the Klingon Empire who sought peace with the Federation a chance at achieving it. Even so, extremists from both the Klingon Empire and the Federation almost succeeded in bringing on full war. Only through the heroic acts of a small group of rogue Starfleet officers was that war avoided. Had only a few things gone differently the Federation would have found itself in open conflict with a vicious and terrible enemy.
The Four Years War forever changed the Federation. After the official cease fire, Starfleet returned to its mission of peaceful exploration. However, in addition to state of the art scientific equipment, Federation explorers would also wield some of the most powerful weapons in the local galaxy. Powerful ships like the Constitution Class cruisers, referred to by Klingon warriors, with grudging respect, as Federation Battle Cruisers.
Indeed, Starfleet's arsenal was the envy of the major races in known space. However, some within the Federation feared it would not be enough. It was known through extensive espionage efforts that the Klingon Empire was maintaining a massive military budget and some feared that when the hammer fell the Klingon Defense Forces would have technology surpassing that posessed by a Starfleet that had fallen into what they considered complacency.
There were many differing opinions within the federation on how to handle the Klingon buildup. For the Federation pacifists the only option was a diplomatic solution. Some even felt that Starfleet's mission of exploration was dangerously close to being usurped by a military focus and pressed for a disarmament that would have restricted Starfleet vessels to a minimum defensive capabilities. On the other end of the spectrum were those who felt that the only possible solution was to match the Klingon buildup and maintain peace through strength of arms, or, if necessary, to defeat them in war.
The majority, of course, fell somewhere between those extremes. Most hoping for some diplomatic solution but acknowledging that the Klingon Empire was a terrible threat and that it would be insane to be unprepared for war, should it come.
Eventually the moderates won out. Starfleet would maintain the status quo. Producing larger and more capable ships, but still multi-role explorers. This is most famously exemplified in the Excelsior Class Cruiser which would later become the ubiquitous workhorse of Starfleet.
Regardless, those pushing for military solutions did not give up, and though their suggestions were not adopted in full they were able to get a number of purpose built warships commissioned. One of those ships is the Portland Class Dreadnought.
The Portland Class almost never left the drawing board. Designed from the ground up to fight, it had no exploration capability whatsoever. Even her impressive array of sensors were all calibrated for combat applications. The only concession to a possible multi-role use was the inclusion of an interchangeable mission pod.
The interests backing this project had used considerable political clout to ensure that the review committee would approve it, however, at the last minute their opponents outmaneuvered them and the committee was reassigned. Final approval would now fall to the Admiral in charge of the engineering department that had been assigned to implement the class. Admiral Hugh Portenza was a supporter of disarmament. There just wasn't time and despite their efforts they were unable to regain control of the approval. It seemed certain that the Portland Class was doomed to die on paper.
With all hope lost they turned their attention to other concerns. However, everyone was shocked when against all expectation the project was approved. Unfortunately, on the very day that the proposal was to be presented to Admiral Portenza he died in an unexplained shuttle collision. His replacement, Admiral Callum approved the project. Within months the U.S.S. Portland was under construction at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards.
After her precarious start, construction of the prototype went without a hitch. The engineering team, it seemed, had done their jobs admirably. Only a few issues cropped up and were easily addressed during trial runs. The Class was deemed a success and construction contracts were drawn up for four additional hulls.
The primary mission of the Portland Class Dreadnought would be to combat Klingon Defense Forces. This mission would be completely unlike any duty served by any officers serving in Starfleet at that time. The crew would need to be prepared to combat Klingon Warriors, trained from early childhood in combat skills, not only in ship engagements, but also in boarding actions. A tactic heavily favored by Klingons.
For this reason it was determined that the crew of this new vessel would need to undergo special training. The new crew was assembled from a list of likely candidates and sent to an undisclosed location for combat training. After completing a grueling training regimen the U.S.S. Portland was assigned to active duty providing security for starbases near the Klingon Neutral Zone.
Over the next three years the remaining Portland Class Dreadnoughts were finished and commissioned into service where all five served near the Klingon Neutral Zone and served as a deterrent to Klingon aggression.
Fortunately relations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire did not come to war and the disaster at Praxis precipitated events that would lead to a lasting peace. As a provision of the Khitomer Accords, the Portland Class Dreadnoughts were pulled from the Klingon border and assigned to other duties.
The U.S.S. Portland Was reassigned to serve in the Sol System Defense Fleet. Eventually she was mothballed, and finally reactivated for the Borg encounter at Wolf 359 where she was lost with all hands.
The U.S.S. Rio De Janeiro was removed from active duty and converted to provide courier services for V.I.P.s and foreign dignitaries. After 20 years of service she was heavily damaged in an attempted assassination of a Romulan ambassador. Due to the age of the vessel and the extent of the damage it was decided to decommission her. She was stripped of useful technology and sold for scrap.
Two of the Dreadnoughts, U.S.S. Johannesburg and U.S.S. Perth underwent slight refits and were fitted with newly designed exploration mission pods. They were then assigned to exploration duties in high risk areas where the ships' formidable combat capabilities would be of use. the Johannesburg, after 7 years of service disappeared without a trace. Her last contact to starfleet was a routine report, after which she was never heard from again. When She failed to make her next scheduled report Starfleet dispatched her sister ship, the U.S.S. Perth to find her. The Perth conducted a thorough search of the area surrounding her last known location but could find no sign of what happened to her. The Perth served for many more years before finally being decommissioned and mothballed. Eventually her hull was stripped and broken down for materials.
The U.S.S. Berlin was decommissioned and transferred to the Starfleet Starship Museum where she rests to this day. After the destruction of the U.S.S. Portland she is the last remaining ship of her class.

Nice work as usual, but this is a minor quibble, does anyone else think that the aft/port aft/starboard phasers on the underside of the saucer have too restricted a field of fire to be of much benefit?

Of course those phaser mounts will have a slightly restricted field of fire but they will still provide significant lateral, ventral, and aft coverage.
