Pretty sharp on the BT Trivia Iron nerd. But did you ever take a LAM into battle? Never played one.

LAM's are a lot of fun. I have played them a couple of times. In airmech mode you zip all over the map blasting mechs in the back. If you use the extended movement rules you're just about impossible to hit. The downside is the weight taken up by the transformation gear. You also have to create a character with piloting and gunnery skills for both 'Mechs and Aerospace fighters, which means he's not the greatest at either.

Back in the day, before the Clans came out, we played BT so much we had the weapon charts and most mech sheets memorized. In our games we found (again 3025 tech only) the medium laser was the best weapon with lots of heat sinks. The only thing I kept out of mine was all the Battleforce (both versions) stuff. I liked how that system made for fog of war. I wish they had made more of the first version counters.

I love the 3025 era. And the Med Las was the best bang for the buck. I've always felt LRMs were almost worthless.
The Clans were fun for a while, but got old in a hurry.

Sierra had a very good computer version "Earthsiege 2" in the early 2000's. It also had the possibility to fly a fighter plane.
I really liked that game. The sequel wasn't as good. Too bad it wasn't MP.

That was actually an okay game, until Mechwarrior 2 came out. Battletech may be clunky, but it has a very cool universe that "Earthsiege 2" never really had. A lot of BT players are more in it for the lore than the actual game. I like both, even though the BT rules are actually broken.

EarthSiege 2 had some good videos on it, and good enough backstory for me. It took about as long to complete as Diablo. Well worth it.

It did have some nice backstory, but compare that to 200 novels (and a really crappy cartoon) that take place in the BT universe... Not just stories about the battles, there is a lot of courtly intrigue going on in these books as well. Plenty of the stuff that gamers love.
Not saying the Earthsiege were sub-par. They were very well done, looked great and played well. Ask around a group of gamers, however, and most have heard of BT while only two on this board have played Earthsiege 2. It's all about marketing, and FASA knew how to market a game.

I ran two version of Battletech at Anime Weekend Atlanta last month. One game of basic 3025 Battletech. Took four hours for four mechs (two teams of two each). It was a good game, but nothing crazy happened. Then I asked the players if they wanted to play something I have been wanting try for a while, but have not had the chance; Battletech: Alpha Strike [ LINK]. And we were off to the races. It's a fun system that distills Battletech down to a more basic system that still keeps the spirit of the original game. It started with Battleforce 2 which had a system for converting mechs into simplified units that could be played as part of an army. As a stand-alone rules set, it was called "Quick Strike". Catalyst buffed out the rough spots and called it "Alpha Strike" (to reduce confusion with "Quick Start" rules). All you really need to play is the free "Alpha Strike Quick Start Rules" and some mech-sheets available for free in the Master Unit List [ LINK] (plus dice and maps). Last time I went to the game store, we played 4-on-4 with mostly 1st time players and we were finished in under 90 minutes - and everyone had a good time (amazing). So why the lengthy post? What if there were a ST:STCS: Alpha Strike? Could be pretty cool.

When I finally had to sell my entire BT collection because of economics the only parts I kept were the space craft games and books and all of the BF 1 and 2 boxed games and books.

Dude... That's harsh.
You kept BF 1 and 2 and Battlespace (or Aerotech)? Most guys would have kept 3025*, 2750*, 3050** and Master Rules or Compendium. Interesting choices. I respect your sense of BT diversity.
* - Lost in basement flood when the pressure regulator in my house sprung a leak (after only 50 years of service) ** - "Borrowed" by a friend about 20 years ago (along with my Axis & Allies set).

I liked the original orthographic drawings and the linear black and white ones, i.e like the books Ironnerd mentioned.
In the video games though it never pans out to play as a scout class. They just aren't fast enough and unlike the board games seem way to easy to hit.

That was the art by Duane Loose. He did a few of the Tech Readouts. I always enjoyed his work.
We played the aerospace rules for Alpha Strike last week. Very fast playing - fun too. Needed a little "more" though. It was our first time playing those rules, and we made a few errors. Next week we'll try again - maybe even try the SPACE COMBAT rules in a few weeks.
