Dear friends and neighbors,
Following the example of The Screaming Swede, I will be posting the ships of the Kephan Unity Star Navy (KUSN) on this thread. Parts of the Unity's history will also be posted here also, unless this violates forum rules. If so, please let me know and they will be posted in the proper place.
Many thanks to you all in advance.

Assault ship seems an unusual focus for getting cast-off specialized hulls. Any larger fast cargo vessel could be readily modified into a fairly effective assault ship. Create bunk space, put some protection around armories, add a few combat transporters. Frankly, the various FASA liners would be better at the task than the designs created under the assault ship moniker.

Create bunk space, put some protection around armories, add a few combat transporters. Frankly, the various FASA liners would be better at the task than the designs created under the assault ship moniker. That would make sense. Unfortunately, the Kephan's Congress demanded a rapid buildup of their Star Navy. When decisions are made in haste or carried out in haste, mistakes and stupid actions are the result. And this was one of many. Way too many. A good example of this bad policy was the creation of the Klingon's D-11 One Wing destroyer. According to the description on it's page: "Many jokes circulate through Star Fleet concerning the design. The most long-lived of these has it that the designer was under pressure to have the design completed by a certain date. In order to satisfy his contract and spare his life, goes the story, the manufacturer completed the ship minus the starboard wing assembly."
The Kephans would soon create their "answer", so to speak, to the D-11. It would create similar embarrassment for them as the One Wing did for the Klingons.

Bushel Basket Class VIII Heavy Freighter/Colonial TransportA year after the purchase of the Monarch-class freighters, the KUSN offered a huge financial prize for the first indigenous designed ship combining aspects of both freighter and colonial transport. A combined group of Orion, Earthling and Klingon shipbuilders proposed a design shortly after the announcement. Their Klingon spokesman, Jongrev, reminded the public and the Unity Congress that the lack of colonial transports would slow down expansion within Unity space to a crawl. The budget for ship building wouldn't allow funding for both transports and freighters, at least not for the near future. With the KUSN's permission, the group – now known as the Anchor Co-operative – built and tested a starship fulfilling the prize's conditions. The result would be the butt of many jokes in the Quadrant for years to come. The Anchor's designers hit upon the idea of two double-domed hulls, the inner dome patterned after the geodesic dome made by the Earthling inventor R. Buckminster Fuller. More cargo would be stored in less space and the outer dome provided an extra layer of protection. Each pair of domes were connected by a strong central platform. The team also suggested adding Orion-made copies of the Klingon T-3 Mover assault ship bridge, along with copies of warp and impulse engines from the Klingon G-3 Baka Re' freighter. For weaponry, two KD-1 disruptors in the bridge would provide some protection but not much. A copy of the KSC deflectors provided just enough shielding to do the job. Star Fleet Intelligence derided it when it first appeared hauling cargo in Orion space. It was nicknamed “The Flying Hamburger” for it's ungainly shape. The Klingons called it “Stack of Pancakes” and wrote comic songs about it to entertain themselves. The class is manufactured at the capitol planets of Kepha, Cephas and Petrus, along with the mining world Acne and the tropical tourist world Aristungah. Yearly production rate is 20. Chain Lightning-class Class VII DestroyerThe Anchor Co-operative, the design team who created the much-derided Bushel Basket heavy freighter, thirsted for a chance to redeem it's reputation in the public eye – and before the Kephan Unity Star Navy. A month after the KUSN received a pair of Orion-built Lightnings, Anchor's board of directors authorized a study on creating a makeshift destroyer from whatever starship parts could be copied or scrounged. The sooner it was done the better. The Orion members of the board suggested an audacious and cost-effective plan. Two copies of the newly arrived Lightnings would be made. One would then be flipped upside-down, then welded to the right-side-up counterpart and reinforced on the inside. Crew complements and cargo space would be slightly enlarged, along with an increase in shuttle bays and transporters. Two blockade runners become a destroyer in the process. Thinking the Star Navy wouldn't approve, Anchor decided to create this experimental ship on it's own before presenting it to the public. Rigorous testing and three shakedown cruises later confirmed the Orion members' faith in their suggestion. Twelve copied OD-3 disruptors were installed, with six in the bow promising a lethal head-on punch if needed. Speed and maneuverability remained constant. When the first of the Chain Lightnings made it's debut, the Star Navy was left scratching their collective heads. When the Orion authorities found out later on what happened, they were stunned into silence. Playing it safe, the KUSN ordered two more of the Chain Lightnings, ordering all three of the class to operate as one until further notice. The Kephan Congress also authorized funds sent to the Orion government as compensation for the unauthorized copies made. The class is currently made at Aristungah at a projected four per year. Attack Dog Class IV Heavy Gunboat
With the success of the Chain Lightning-class destroyer, Anchor Co-operative's board of directors searched through the dozens of reclaimed ships within Kephan space. Their hope was to repeat their success on a smaller scale, both to reduce the cost of building a failure of a starship and eliminate the risk of the same. Tri-Planetary Command (TPC), the military directorate of the Kephan Unity, reported to it's Congress about the lack of gunboats needed to supply defense against piracy and Klingon raiders. Not to rest on their laurels, Anchor grasped the opportunity to plug the gap TPC revealed. They promised to provide a workable gunboat within a year's time. Inspiration for this project came from the missions of America's patrol torpedo (PT) boat fleet through the Second World War. Built to take the Allied war effort to the Imperial Japanese Navy's rear areas, the PT boats packed a huge punch for their small size. Anchor looked along these lines for a warp-powered craft to fit the bill. They struck pay dirt with two Klingon castoffs. The Watcher and Administrator-class gunboats operated in groups of five or six, attacking their targets on the same principle. They didn't last long in combat, and their crews were scorned within the Imperial Klingon Navy. Their crews had their place nonetheless, relishing any chance to strike any Federation or Romulan target unlucky to cross their paths. With this in mind, Anchor's shipbuilders applied the same principle as they did to the Lightning-class blockade runners. Two copies were made of each class of gunboat, which were then welded to each other's bottom. The insides were then rearranged and slightly expanded to fit the crew's requirements for long-term operations. Each new heavy gunboat was put through three shakedown cruises to discover and fix any flaws. The combined K-5C Watchers were classified Attack Dogs, while their K-6C Administrator counterparts were named Guard Dogs. The first heavy gunboats were assigned to assist the Chain Lightnings patrolling the Federation and Klingon frontiers. Two of each class accompany each destroyer on it's rounds, providing extra protection and flexibility in potential attack. Each class is built at the main shipyards at Kepha, Cephas and Petrus, as well as the tourist planet Aristungah and the mining world Acne at a rate of 20 per year. Guard Dog Class IV Heavy Gunboat The counterpart of the Attack Dog-class, the Guard Dog-class heavy gunboat wasn't well-liked by her crews. Although faster, the class was smaller and heavier than the Attack Dog, with less room for both crew and cargo. The disruptors were also less powerful, though this was made up by the twin disruptors in the rear. Both classes were built at the main shipyards at Kepha, Cephas and Petrus, as well as the tourist planet Aristungah and the mining world Acne at a rate of 20 per year. Swordfish Class VIII DestroyerK'nip Shun Scrapyards had a reputation for buying any piece of scrap that could be rebuilt or recycled, no matter how damaged or blasted. They were shameless scroungers and half-mad builders of monstrous creations that were barely space-worthy. When the Kephan Congress sent out the call for a rapid buildup of their Star Navy, they felt it their patriotic duty to answer that call. What they made would be remembered as the Unity's "answer" to the Klingon's groan-inducing D-11 One Wing destroyer. Shortly after the arrival of to-be-scrapped Federation and Klingon destroyers into Kephan space, K'nip Shun's governing board got the idea of making their own destroyer. Using the Saladin MK III as their basis, they made a near-copy of the Federation ship, adding a second copy of it's FWC-2 engine and it's support. On a whim, they reconstructed the boom of a D-7 from pieces they collected over the years, then welded it to the front of the saucer section. Cargo space was slightly increased, along with shield power and an additional transporter. In initial tests, the contraption was slower in emergency speed than the Saladin. Pleased with the results, they built two more copies, presenting all three ships to the Star Navy a year later. Based on their looks, they were christened as Swordfish, Marlin and Narwhal. Disturbed, the Star Navy assigned the trio to Survey and Colony Command, accompanying convoys of colony ships as protectors and impromptu scouts. K'nip Shun won a commendation for “patriotism and originality in ship construction”, but was quietly dissuaded from ever making anything like them ever again. The trio was built at the mining world Acne. Got to say that's the strangest ship I've ever seen in this game. Looks like it would be a fun ship to use. Go ahead and field test it if you wish. See what works and what doesn't. There is always room to improve it. Both the Feds and Klingons would love to tackle it, I'm sure. Onward and upward!

As requested by a member of the game group on Facebook, here below is a map of the Kephan Unity during the TOS Era. It has the positions of the capital, as well as it's other major worlds Acne and Aristungah. Also in neutral space is the world Telemann's Planet, named after the German classical music composer George Friedrich Telemann. In a future fanfic, the Organians would offer the Federation and the Klingons a similar deal to develop the world as they did Sherman's Planet -- but with one major exception. They insist the Kephans get their chance to make their case for developing the planet as well. Lots of dramatic possibilities. Attachments:

I still do not know where you are in relation with Orion space Okay, here is a map of the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone. The big circle on the lower right is Orion space. On the upper left is where Kephan space begins. Before it is Telemann's Planet, a neutral world that the Feds, Kephans and Klingons look to develop and make their own. So any Kephan freighter convoy has to travel down the length of the Fed-Klingon Neutral Zone to arrive in Orion territory. Hope this helps and thanks in advance.

And where is all this relative to the Triangle? The Triangle is on the other side -- the "south side", if you like -- of the Fed-Klingon Neutral Zone. Hence, it is VERY distant from Unity space, which is on the "north side" of the Neutral Zone.

HOMEBUILT NAVY ERA
River Class IX Frigate
K'nip Shun Scrapyards had a hidden jewel in the person of ship designer Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz. Though suffering from inherited mental illnesses, De Santa Cruz was a genius in creating space-worthy craft from odds and ends. He made them safer and stronger than was expected, even if it took longer than expected to build. More often than not, his contraptions kept the business alive. Still, his ideas sometimes got him into trouble. The worst example was the Swordfish-class, condemned as the KUSN's “answer” to the Klingon's D-11 One Wing destroyer. The board of directors made it clear to De Santa Cruz that his job was on the line if he messed up again. Some of the Klingon and Andorian members inferred that his life would also be in jeopardy if they were ever embarrassed again. Getting the hint, De Santa Cruz looked around for a project that would keep him alive and restore K'nip Shun's reputation. He found it when both the Unity Congress and Tri-Planetary Command (TPC) put out the call for an indigenous built frigate. From among the castoffs rescued from both Federation and Klingon scrapyards, he fixed his attention on the reclaimed L-6G Defenders and Loknar MK Is. The Loknars earned a solid reputation during the Four Years War for toughness in battle, though by now the MK I's weapons were too weak to hurt any potential foe. Furthermore, the gaps in the rear of the saucer section risked exposure to easy damage once the shields were down. The Defenders savaged their targets with powerful front and rear firing disruptors, yet the reverse swept wing warp engine structure was a major problem. He also saw that it's thin boom was too tempting a target for destruction, viewing it as a disturbing design flaw in most Klingon warships. De Santa Cruz hit upon the idea to combine both frigate classes into one. When he presented his proposal to the board, he breathed a sigh of relief when they approved his plan. K'nip Shun's engineers -- Orion, Klingon, Andorian and human -- built their copies of the Loknar and Defender, then really went to work. First the Loknar saucer section would have it's rear gaps filled. The four heavy lasers would be replaced with two phasers. The accelerator cannon was replaced with a photon torpedo. Next the Defender would have it's wing structure reversed, so it would look more like it's counterparts in the Klingon fleet. The boom would be replaced with the Loknar saucer. The four KD-6 disruptors would be removed. The KIB-2 impulse engine would be swapped for the Loknar's FIC-2, giving it slightly more power. There would be extra room in this new ship for two more shuttlecraft and their launch bays. Standard transporters would be increased to five, while emergency and cargo transporters each increased to three. Cargo capacity would increase to 20,000 tons. The troop contingent and it's quarters remained untouched. Like the ill-built Swordfish-class, the new ship would carry both phasers and disruptors as primary beam weapons. No other space navy in either the Alpha or Beta Quadrants would consider doing such a thing. This policy, among many others that the Congress and TPC would approve, would inspire the Klingons to call the Kephans “The Insane Ones”. The Orions agreed but didn't care, appreciating the Kephans' appreciation for their goods and services – especially in shipbuilding. The Federation officially kept it's mouth shut and ignored them....for now. As was becoming unofficial standard policy for companies under KUSN contract, K'nip Shun built their test vehicle with their own funds. Then they put it through three shakedown cruises to remove any flaws. At emergency speed, it reached Warp 7, one factor slower than the Defender. Shielding was adequate but could use improvement. The additional combat transporters would come in handy in boarding actions to capture enemy ships. Pleased with it's performance, the KUSN approved the new vessel, christened the River-class. The frigates are named after the major rivers on Earth, starting with HHS River Jordan. The class is built at the mining world Acne and the new facility in the Monavees system. Production currently is at four per year. HOMEBUILT NAVY ERA
Pegasus Class VII Destroyer
K'nip Shun Scrapyards hit paydirt with the design and construction of the River-class frigate. It's ship designer, the brilliant yet mentally ill Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz, believed he could repeat his success on a larger scale. So as before, he searched through the castoffs gathered from Federation and Klingon stellar junkyards. The KUSN wanted a destroyer and quickly. A destroyer they would get. He cast his eyes upon the D-11 One Wing, one of the biggest among many embarrassments in Klingon ship design. De Santa Cruz figured that completing the wing structure, combined with a Saladin-class saucer, would deliver the indigenous destroyer the Star Navy wanted. The governing board of K'nip Shun approved the construction of one ship as a test vehicle. The end product left them wondering if a repeat of the Swordfish-class fiasco was on the horizon. De Santa Cruz himself wondered if both his job and his life were on the line as well. But the KUSN was in a rush to get the ship on their frontiers, so they reluctantly approved it's construction. Now christened as the Pegasus-class, for each three destroyers built, one was assigned to the Federation frontier. The second went to the Klingon border. The third went into the reserves. It was transporter-heavy with six regular, six emergency, two combat and two cargo transporters. It kept the original troop complement from the D-11 for boarding party missions. The FIC-3 impulse engine from the Saladin saucer copy replaced the original Klingon engine. Nonetheless it was still under-powered. A copy of the KSJ shield systems provided the crew just enough protection but no more. The stern was lifted and widened just enough to house three shuttlecraft. Like the Swordfish and River classes before it, the new ship combined phasers and disruptors as primary beam weapons along with a copied Federation photon torpedo. Unfortunately like these classes, there was no protection in the rear. The class is currently built at the mining world Acne and the new facility at Novamees at the rate of six per year. Just a thought on the hull layout maybe if you got rid of the 'thin' 'neck' between where the saucer and aft hull connect and merge it together it'd flow better in top down view also it'd lessen the ships profil always a plus for combat ships

Also it'd lessen the ships profile, always a plus for combat ships. Hmm...good point. That could work for a Mark Two model of the Pegasus. I think it needs less transporters and stronger engines as well but don't know which it could have without tearing it apart. What do you all think? I had trouble with the new destroyer partly because I couldn't draw this through Paint.net and so gave up trying. Since I've now a new printer/scanner and new computer, I was able to scan the design after using tracer paper for the parts and then scanned it into the computer. It still doesn't look very good, but this is the best I can do with what I have.

Well if you're keeping with the idea of the mark 2 being 'gimped' still i'd say keep the broken styles and add transporters to 'amke it worse' due to 'more power demands it couldnt hold up'

Well if you're keeping with the idea of the mark 2 being 'gimped' still I'd say keep the broken styles and add transporters to 'make it worse' due to 'more power demands it couldn't hold up' Maybe, then again maybe not. I can't tell until the Pegasus is field-tested by those more learned than I. Then based on the results, a decent Mark 2 can be designed and an equally decent backstory for it written up. So hint-hint to the more active FASA Trek players on the board. Field-test the ship or ships and get back to us. Please and thank you in advance.
