Like most designs of the era - it had a short service life. Aviation was changing quite rapidly by the 1930's...

Ugh... I love this thread. If for no other reason than it is Gorn free. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather fly than fornicate, and I loves me my airplanes, but Gorn is such a royal pain in the butt. At least he said he never comes in here, and does not troll this thread so I might vent here once in a while. If he mentions it, he just outs himself as a complete liar. So my company was going to move a plane to South Carolina on Monday. Then they tried to book a hotel for the crew. Apparently no one running the company realized there was a total eclipse that was going to pass right over the airport, and that every hotel in a 200 mile radius was overbooked! We all figured it out pretty quick. We were all looking at each other asking "During an eclipse? Seriously?" Of course flying during an eclipse is no problem, so long as you have you three night-time landings before flying passengers...

Yep - finding a decent hotel right now is ... interesting, to say the least. Wouldn't be bad to spend the eclipse on that bird though!

I'll get 97% in my town.
Concord is actually pretty small. Like a DC-9/MD-80/-88

I had a chat with the FAA about the plane under my back deck (2nd story deck). I rephrased the situation (i.e. the plan was never registered as anything), and they said, "Oh, that's no problem." rrrggghhhh Now I need an air compressor so I can get to work. Dang... more tools...

you know, you're going to nickel and dime yourself to death, but at least in this case it's not for some generic nerdcast musclecar, it's to FLY IN THE AIR.
kind of makes it easier to spend the $$.

Oh yeah... It's gonna cost me some coin. New prop. Structural tubes uhm... WINGS dope and fabric covering materials radio maybe ADS-B and a few other things Then fuel, insurance, hangar. I'll have to get my biennial flight review and LAST medical (for once the FAA did something I like). I also know a good mechanic, so I'll save some money there. Maybe even get some side work on the Light Sport planes at the same airport (like the "Flight Design" CTLS - that thing is sweet!) The Hawk is a bit less advanced [ LINK]

Nellie flies on a 125 hp Lycoming O-290-D. Great engine but it is getting harder and harder to keep it flying. It still is using designed power, but the motor has been rebuilt about three times that i know of....
The girl is named after my Grandmother....

Nellie... I like that!
290 is a good little engine. Guessing about 7 ghp at Cruise. Not too bad. Do you have an Auto-Gas STC?
The AA-1 has an O-235 so it drinks about 6 gph. Seems to run better on MoGas than it does on 100LL. I want to try 80/87, but it's pretty hard to find around here.
Still holding out for an AA-5A for a family truckster. More efficient than ye olde 172.
The Grumman shares a hangar with a pair of Barons. One has a pair of O-470's and the other has O-520's. Last time I flew in the B-55 it was just to fly to the next airport for cheaper gas, the owner spent $350 to fill the tanks. Costs don't double with two engines, they square.

Haven't taken her to auto gas yet, but that is one of the things that is dining me to death. AVGAS is getting harder to find. They want everybody using unleaded you know. I am going to have to invest into getting a AutoGas STC....if i want to keep her flying. That said i am weary of going to autogas. I know they say it is ok, but well I am not sure because these old engines were designed to work with the lead in avgas.
That said I will probably have to get a STC for the old girl.

On any aviation forum, cowboy40 would have touched off a raging debate with that post. I also love the 1710 series! It was a BEAST. Less finicky than the Merlin, and it had a higher power to weight ratio than the Merlin. What it did not have was a two stage supercharger (due to a War Department specification). That's why the P-38 fed the Supercharger with compressed air form a turbocharger to allow for high altitude operations. There was no room for all the turbo ducting in the P-51, so North American grabbed the Merlin.

Yep - all it needed was a good supercharger (or "turbo-supercharger" as they called them in the day)...

In their elements, all those planes up there have to be considered excellent machines. They could best anything out there close to the weeds.

The Ruskies loved the P-39 for ground attack. Even Yeager spoke well of it (when it was at low altitude).

Incidentally one of my favorite planes in any computer sim. You just need one lucky hit with that 30 mm (fortunately more reliable in games than I've heard the real thing ever was).

The Russians sent reports back, to the US Army and Bell, that the Airacobra and Kingcobra would return with up to eight cylinders shot out. That Allison engine would bring you home, even if it wouldn't ever turn again once you got back to base. It was truly a beast of an engine....
