Just because it'll be amusing to see what ships people post... This is the "Cosmostrator" from the movie The First Spacehip on Venus; made by the East Germans working with the Poles. No goofy rules, just post those weird and wonderful (and probably half-forgotten) space ships.

You can almost see the dorsal strut, secondary hull and nacelles added to create a prototype Constitution (Forbidden Planet being a major influence on Gene Roddenberry).

I've got some of the art books with Matt's ideas... Lots of - not quite right - and a lot of interesting stuff.

Yeah... A little surfing shows a lot of "meh..." followed by a "ZANG!" It's like he just kept drawing until he found what he was looking for. My artist friends always want me to describe exactly what I want for a character or mecha. Heck, if I could do that, I would draw my self. Wrangling myself back on topic: This Island Earth

That's the essence of using "thumbnails" (small sketches) and if you look at some sheets, there are at least a dozen designs for just about everything. Matt would sometimes be working with the most insanely crude description from Gene (or the other Gene) and have to just work through it a bit. Then, he would show them a set of sketches and whatever stood out to them, is the starting point for more detailed work.
Back in those days, there was a lot more imagination and very little time to waste!

@ironnerd never would have guessed that one in a million years, even though i’ve seen it before. . Try this one: Anyone else getting a “delta flyer”feel from this one? and here’s another hint:

A Starfire from Jason of Star Command and a Seeker from Space Academy. I watched those shows as a kid. I knew they sucked, but I still liked them. I even wondered "How'd they get Scotty on this show?" I still like the design of the Seeker, and of the Space Academy itself. I'm pretty sure the Seekers were developed form a model of Ark II (another show I watched as a kid). Maybe a few of you will catch the passing similarity of the two vehicles.

that’s deliberate so they could still use the interior, it’s also why the ships on those kid’s cartoon sites looked so much like cars in the inside.
worked for me, kind of help us pretend our chrysler wagon had aft guns and a hyperdrive while we were driving to grandmas.

Yup... frugality (maybe not on par with Jim Henson frugality, but still respectable). I always thought the Ark was a freakishly cool vehicle. Krofft was also able to pull in Julie Newmar in Jason of Star Command, as well as "Cleopatra Jones" and a Playboy Centerfold, and Sid Haig (who is STILL working) was always fun. The Chryser wagon must have had the rear-facing folding "tail-gunner" seat like my friend's "Vista Cruiser". That was always the seat we "requested" on trips. Hyperdrive was a winter thing. The snow in the headlights looked just like the stars in Star Trek. And... an (semi)esoteric ship:
