Bigpoint is shutting down one of my favorite games: Battlestar Galactica Online, at the end of this month.
I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I enjoyed the different ship classes, there are fighters, escorts, battleships and carriers and they have unique strengths and weaknesses that work well together.
I had the fastest viper (205 meters per second) on the server after spending 5 years grinding out level 15 gear. My mark VII was a PVP murder machine with long range guns and just a bit faster than average. A long time ago I made it into the top 100 with my KDR.
In that game, once you left the home system it was instant, merciless PVP battle. You had to stay on your toes, but the best part by far was flying with a group of fighters, working together to take down larger ships.
It's a shame when they close, the last time was with Star Wars Galacies (Jump to light speed). I hated leaving my y-wing and heavy Z-95.
On one hand I'm sort of glad the time sink is closed but not gonna lie for a minute it felt like the detox scene in trainspotting.
It just got me thinking about the virtue of games like FASA STCS and all the ways there are to recommend it over a PC game.
So long, BSGO, thanks for the good times.

yeah it's pretty sad. It's a good gaming engine, I hope someone takes this idea and makes it profitable. I tried star trek online, I really did...it just doesn't match the same feeling of bad assery you get from popping a target in this game.
This is me wiping out 2 raiders in less than 30 seconds with a fracking RAPTOR. Could have got more video but i'm slow on the "record" button.

Yeah. I have a really fast MK VII viper with long range guns. So people try to escape combat and I stay behind them, just fast enough to needle them until they blow up but far enough away that they would die before they could turn around.
It gets a lot of complaints as you might imagine. People talk smack so I talk back.
Once while doing that I typed "run coward, run!"
I killed The PVP target and then said "Beware, I live. I hunger". My wing thought it was funny and one of them plaid that opening guitar riff from the video game in chat.
It just kind of stuck, and the MK VII looks like the ship from so sinister from the top.

The game devolved into hacking and cheating, some people found an exploit to fill their storage with infinite nukes and money. Basically after the last time I logged in it's unplayable, the mods are all away.
But, the circumstance gave me a chance to end on a high note. A Cylon was spamming nukes and destroyed most of my squad, he hit our carrier. No way he should have had that many nukes...
Anyway I happened to have my favorite ship so I went after him:

After that I uninstalled the game and quit as happy man. It doesn't get any better than beating a cheater.

Eh, as an MMO it was okay. I tried it early on, but I don't really like the grinding required so I forgot about it. I logged on again in it's twilight days and found the game had devolved from "okay" to "unplayable" due to constant cheating and no moderation.

trekee2018 you aren't wrong. I'm the first to admit that game wasn't for everyone. @ironnerd thanks! I'm moving in to Star conflict now, the whole wing transferred to that game. Singular moments of virtuosity like you see in that video are harder to come by though. The game is a bit more like halo but it is an impressive space sim. Star Trek online? Sorry it's just too boring for me with all the damn fetch quests and "immersive" content. I guess I don't have time for traditional MMO which is why BSGO appealed to me.

I wish I had time for MMO's. Unfortunately being the President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Flat Earth Society chapter takes up all of my free time.
