In the FASAverse, we have the Star Fleet Marine Corps as a major command branch of the Star Fleet. The Marines were heavily used in ground operations during the Four Years War, and that they provide security at UFP embassies and other major installations. There also seems to be a brigade of marines assigned to Star Base (according to an article in Stardate Magazine).
During the Four Years War, several Marine Assault Regiments were organized to be landed from "assault" ships to take back systems and to even assault klingon orbital outposts. These units were most likely formed from the brigades assigned to Star Bases seeing how their transport ships were conversions of civilian Eagle class liners and converted freighters, but they proved effective enough that they become a permanent separate units with in the SFMC. After the war, specialized ships would be designed to move these "assault regiments" and "landing brigades". This gave Star Fleet a permanent force of ground troops ready to move at anytime. The question here is would these units remain a separate entity from those brigades stationed at Star Bases?
I should point out that the Four Years War was the point and places where SFMC stood out, because during the Romulan War, ground actions were far and in between. That war was a war of attrition in space...there weren't even very many fleet actions...both sides just pounded at each other and were each other down.
Another thing that occurred during the FYW, was that Star Fleet was in a position to capture enemy ships. This didn't happen in the Romulan War, so their were no really trained personal in the craft of boarding and taking an enemy vessel. This job fell to ad hoc boarding parties of security personal and ships operations personal. Even though this was a quick solution, it was felt that something else was needed so special companies of marines were raised to fill this role. but these units weren't really ready until near the end of the war, and they had to be crowded on already crowded frigates. After the war, the new frigates were designed to hold one of these companies each.
After the war, this lead to a new problem. these companies would become the perfect sized units to handle small piece time situations that called for special missions. So those frigates carrying these marines would find themselves bouncing all over the Federation conducting rescue missions, security missions and so on. They would become a "fire" brigade putting out the small brush fires before they could turn into full scale war. The problem is that these "ship's companies" found themselves in situations were they weren't fully prepared, equipped or even trained to handle. To solve this issue the Star Fleet designed a new "assault ship" and the Marines raised new highly trained special operations units for those missions. These companies and each of the new Kolm-An class ships would form a team that would work together on a permanent basis. They would become highly integrated for operations together. These teams would take over most of the specialized missions from the frigate based marines (though there is no doubt these marines would do this kind of work still from time to time...the Federation has a vast territory to operate in). Other duties would be to take and hold landing areas for the assault regiments and to provide advance recon for the landing operations.
The Star Fleet Marines of the late Kirk era would be a vast permanent force of ground pounders, highly trained in the roles of special operations, base security, planetary assault operations and defense.
Though this was during the period of a very hot "Cold War", so if FASA would have continued the license would this force have been needed in the Picard era?
I think it is an integrated part of Star Fleet...I think it would have remained...What are your thoughts on the FASAverse Star Fleet Marine Corps? Seeing how these Marines would be spread all over the Known Federation, would the UFP also had a standing army? Or would they form an army from member Planets in time of war?....Or would this Star Fleet Marine Corps be big enough to stand as a standing army?
What are your thoughts on the matter?
