Microsoft is starting to say they will be closing the back door to the free upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 sometime before January. This is just right before support for Win7 runs out.
As of today, the free upgrade using a retail key for Windows 7 to activate Windows 10 is still working. I used the method today to bring a computer up to Windows 10 Home standard. It worked just fine...
So if you have a Windows 7 system that meets the Windows 10 requirements, I would seriously think about bringing it up to date.

Correct you can use it, but it will be no longer supported. I have a Rig that is running Win7 but it is never online, but it never has to as it is my cg machine. Only when online it will start to be a nuisance, but other than that, you can run xp or older if you care about such things. Keep rolling as you are JAFisher44! Fight Da MAN!

Lol. It's not even about fighting Da MAN. I just don't like Windows 10. I'm hoping a new OS will come out that I can use before I have to abandon Windows 7.

a fairly good alternative, to windows 10, would be Linux Mint 19, or some other form of Linux destro. I suggest Linux Mint 19 with the Cinnamon GUI, because it is one of the more easily picked up destros for Windows users to learn. It is very intuitive and it has a very Windows feel to it. Of course you won't be able to run Windows programs on it, unless you are running a Windows compatibility layer such as WINE on it, and even then some Windows programs still won't work.
unfortunately the best replacement for Windows 7 is still a Windows OS. If you do't want to use Windows 10, you can always purchase a key for use with Windows 8/8.1. Windows 8.1 will have support from Microsoft until 2025.

Sadly I consider Win 10 to be an improvement over Win 8/8.1. I was hoping 10 would be good but it was a let down too. I'll just keep using 7 until I start having compatibility issues and then I'll move the whatever the least objectionable Windows alternative is. Maybe Win 11 won't be total trash... I'm not holding my breath.

there will be no Win 11, Windows 10 with six month upgrades are the new model for Microsoft. This is the same model being followed by Apple with MocOS X.
Simply put the Windows 10 of today is not the Windows 10 of last year. What they will be doing is if they release a Windows 11, it will most likely be another update to the software. Sort of like what they did with Windows 7 and 8 to upgrade to 10. This keeps equipment up to date. So what you will get is still Windows 10 (or still NT based OS). We just have to see what happens...

If Win 2003 is your thing, look into REACT OS. It's not a LINUX distro dressed up to look like WIN XP, it's a scratch-built Windows-compatible OS. I fiddled around with the trial CD, and it was "ok". I just need another spare computer to do a full install and some real testing. Sure it's been in alpha for 20 years, but it looks so cool...
