I just watched the first episode and I really liked it. Has anyone else seen it?
I put a spoiler warning in the subject so feel free to discuss details if you'd like.

So, yeah... I watched the premiere as it's free legally on the CBS youtube channel. It's better than the premiere of DISCO but that's hardly a high hurdle to jump over; at least it's not actively attempting to insult a large part of its core audience. Copious rushed exposition instead of real world building (or updating in this case), unearned emotional intimacy between characters who just met, only slightly better than fan film quality effects at times despite a much bigger budget alongside headscratching questionable choices executed competently, and nonsensical action that disintegrates any reasonable suspension of disbelief in how and why it is happening. As a lifelong trekkie, even my powerful nostalgia shields can't deflect those glaring problems. This episode feels like they've crammed what should have been at least a traditional opening two parter into 45 minutes (and that includes the opening/closing credits and season teaser trailer). YMMV.

I tried to watch Ep 1 on Youtube and made it as far as the Romulans spitting acid and that was it...
Everything before that was...okay...I guess. Just not as engrossing/interesting as the suits seem to think it is.

He actually bit down on some sort of suicide acid capsule and that's what he spit at her (to kill them both and accomplish his mission apparently). The bonkers stupid part came right afterwards when 97 year old (?) Picard survives a point blank explosion that throws him backwars on top of a Starfleet facility with nothing but a scratch and a headache and the police just dropped him off half way around the world onto his couch still unconscious without questioning him or administering any medical aid.

YMMV. I didn't want to say much in my first post on this thread. I did find myself thinking, "Damn, they talk a lot!" and then "Well, explosions worked on Mythbusters, why not Star Trek?"
I mean... There was a really big explosion on top of a Starfleet building, and no one noticed? It was not caught on any ship or shuttle sensor logs? Maybe on a security camera in the nearby village of San Francisco*. Just a loud noise and a huge fireball, and the sprinkler system missed it. They talk about how the reflection of a disruptor blast gets left on the file, but don't seem too interested in the sound of those disruptors (and the explosion) being caught on a few hundred communicators.
And then they postulate that Dahj has a cloaking device that automatically activates when she's afraid... well duh!
Have I mentioned the lack of a starship in ST:P? Because I feel like ST:P has been less Star Trek than Rick Steve's Planet Earth.
...And STP is still better than STD...
Maybe it'll get better when the T-N-A from Voyager shows up (actually a pretty good actress and singer, but Seven was mostly a "pretty good" character... and more interesting than most of the cast of VOY).
* - And what the [expletive] is up with turning the Golden Gate Bridge into a solar farm? Matter/Anti-Matter reactors not good enough for Star Fleet anymore?

Didn't catch the suicide pill bit - but I also closed Youtube and gave up right after that so...

Hey mates! I Don't get CBS All Access and was wondering if anyone would post screen caps of Ships...Romulan, Synth, etc... If it would not be an imposition on anyone. I'm not looking to be a burden, but I'd like to see what style they were going with, as it may spark me to do some different interpretations of those vessels. Thanks greatly in advance.

Clean, limitless, and free energy available since the NX era isn't 2020 real world political talking point enough for nuTrek so they have to regress to something more primitive to make their point. It's a consistent theme unfortunately and all the progress that humanity has made and was showcased for so many decades is gone because they want to make a point (at the expense of the canon, plot, and existing characters instead of working it into new aspects of them all because that's harder to do).
I said above that the episode suffered in large part because it felt like they crammed a 2 parter into one. Things like the android uprising and destruction of Mars should have been the opening scene flashback instead of apparently spread out between a short trek, the second episode, and a lame interview. PIcard's first hand experience in watching "his" massive evacuation fleet being destroyed should have been the opening dream sequence to explain what happened so many years before that caused him to retire. The rest of the episode should have focused on showing us the changes in his personality since to lay the ground work for his return to form with the introduction of Dahj at Plantation Picard in the last seconds of the episode. Instead, we got five to ten minutes of grumpy old space man routine before he pledges his life to helping a very suspicious and likely dangerous stranger who shows up on his doorstep. When an overly emotional bloodied stranger shows up unannounced at your doorstep telling you of her mental instability and that she just killed several people, the correct reaction is to step back and call the authorities... not to welcome her in without reservations and then pledge your undying loyalty to her after you rummage through your storage space.
Part of it is definitely ideology crammed into the show at the expense of everything else as well as a fundamental lack of understanding regarding Star Trek (including from Patrick Stewart unfortunately) but I can't help but think that part of it is also due to a perceived lack of patience on the part of the studios. They don't want the slow burn to draw audiences into the setting but rather just cram all they can to get the supposed water cooler moments and talking points. I see folks whose opinions I respect online (not necessarily agree with all the time but respect nonetheless) giving it relatively good reviews and I find it strange. The same things they complain about with other shows are on this one but it's getting a pass (like Robert Meyer Burnett's verisimilitude catch phrase which IMO this show is severely lacking). It's definitely better than the DISCO premeire but, again, that's not saying much. I'll be waiting likely until the end of DISCO season 3 to try and binge it all (DISCO 2/3, Picard) in the free week. CBS (and Disney) have to prove themselves first before they earn my fandom (and spending) back. YMMV.
For those who like the show, I mean this with no sarcasm.. I'm happy for you. The criticism above isn't directed at you at all but towards the show and (to an extent) those who created it. As a big fan of the first AVP and Starship Troopers movie, I think it's perfectly ok to like things that not everyone agrees with!

I only plan on watching the first episode for now so can't help with that unforunately though myself.

Maybe it'll get netter when they get the ship. I don't 'hate' the show. I'm just not very excited about it. I thing "The Orville" is the new "Star Trek". It's hit-or-miss, but it's also TREKish, tells some good stories, is fresh, and it's human. Four items that newer Trek is short on.

Just for the record, I don't hate the show but rather simply dislike it. Maybe it will get better but I doubt it as changing the setting doesn't change the ingrained messaging, poor writing, and uncharacteristic JJ style action scenes. Regardless, I'm not paying just to see. I'm glad I got to watch the premiere for free on the CBS youtube channel. I've pretty much resigned myself to the notion that trek just isn't for me anymore and likely never will be again given the latest movie rumors saying that Noah Wiley's more traditional trek movie idea isn't going through.

It's such an EASY reset though. It was built into the canon universe in The Cage.
Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, et al... wake up in Talosian prison cells. Bob Wesley busts them out and the crew of Lexington and Enterprise ring Talso IV with satellites to restrict the range of the Talosian's abilities to their own world*. Both ships then go off on the 5th year of the Enterprise's five-year-mission. And we get treated to a new spin-off - Star Trek: Lexington.
* This allows the Talsoians to later disable the satellite network and account for any bad writing in the future.

Wasn't into it though I wanted to be. Modern fiction is too formulaic.
Kept the JJtrek? Yep. "Bad ass female is the key to everything..?" Yep. Heavy handed reference to immigration that breaks Star Trek? Yep.
It's inconceivable that people in the future would be racists against any kind of alien. It breaks Trek because In the future, PEOPLE are supposed to be better. People are more highly evolved. This is like saying people devolved to apes again. It's incongruent with TNG (but not JJ Trek).
Also Data and Picard weren't really that close in the series so it didn't Sense to me.

I'd rather rewatch Firefly, Dark Matter,The Expanse, or Altered Carbon.
Besides, the girl-who-is-a-total-bad-ass-but-does-not-know-how-or-why was done plenty in 1990's anime... but with stories to make it interesting.
Bubblegum Crisis Neon Genesis Dragon Half
OMG! I totally forgot Buffy the Vampire Slayer. THAT's Kick-Ass-Girl done right!

There goes my last hopes that Star Trek: Nemesis wasn't canon.
Also we are stuck with Movie Picard and not show Picard.
But yeah even though they don't really act the same as they did in TNG (it's like Jon Frakes and Marina Sirtis showed up in Star Trek instead of will and Deanna), I have to admit the show is growing on me.

Well, I finished Picard last night thanks to the free month they're currently offering on CBS All Access. Up until the finale, I would have said that the season overall was slightly better than season 1 of DISCO (not a high hurdle to jump) with some notable exceptions but the two part finale really brought down that overall score for me. If Nepenthe (the only episode that I liked overall though it did have its bad moments as well) was how to do emotion and nostalgia well in Picard, the finale was the exact opposite... and had a hefty dose of vapid Battle of the Binary Stars pointless pew pew mixed in along with unearned emotion with ZERO stakes due to being invalidated within 5 minutes. The finale for me was second only to the pirate pimp and torture porn episode as my least favorite and Nepenthe was the only episode I actually enjoyed. The rest was simply mediocre with plenty of cringey and wtf moments mixed in.
