Well here's another R'Archer directed ship build! This time a scout/explorer vessel! Unlike the Tango and Charger Price this one will use more non-orion parts/systems gathered from various sources and then made into their own Kephen brand (Trademark pending! ) systems. So here we go!
During the busy work build up directed by Fleet Admiral R'Archer, his overview of progress for the Tango frigate and Charger's Price heavy cruiser classes were well underway. But he recognized that the Unity would need a solid scout and exploration craft for many other needs. Because the other ship firms were already overtasked by his previous two requests he approached the somewhat 'crazy minded' Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz and his employers at the K'nip Shun Scrapyards. He outlined to them that he wanted a scout/exploration craft that would be easy to mass produce and maintain. His guidelines were that it be able to reach warp and impulse speeds as high as possible. While the K'nip Shun Scrapyards had already built the Waterfall class V Scout. R'Archer felt that the design could be improved and streamlined. Outlining his thoughts Santa Cruz and the rest of the team soon got to work.
Santa Cruz soon took to heart the outlines requested by R'Archer. The first was a narrower ship profile. To do this Cruz shortened the warp pylons by nearly 20% in their downward slope. Second R'Archer had requested through optional the ability for the ship to be able to land on a planet if needed. To allow this Cruz borrowed designs from the Klingon/Romulan Bird Of Prey and installed variable pylons to allow the ship to land with the wings in an upward set swoop. The scrapyard designers also took the Klingon ZD-4 computer and retrofitted it to work as two seperate sub-cores, dubbed the KUZD-4 now. While this split of the original core meant the ship's ability to carry heavier weapons was reduced say compared to the Waterfall it allowed either sub-core to function essential systems such as warp and impulse drive plotting and the sensors at reduced levels. This R'Archer felt was more important in a possible combat scenario for a fast moving scout to still be able to get out of range to report their findings. Further the transporter systems were adjusted compared to the Waterfall, only 1 standard transporter and 1 cargo transporter were now aboard. This opened up more room to install extra passenger quarters and stations for specialists, as well as a bit more room for recreation while on deep space mission assignments. Equally the shuttlebay was reduced in size to carry only 2 shuttles vs 3 like the Waterfall, again this was to provide more room on the ship and also reduce the supply needs for shuttles around the KUSN. The standard Klingon style KWB-3 engines were again retrofitted by Orion engineers for the Unity to be more robust and use less fuel then normal. Dubbed now the KUWB-3 system they met R'Archer's request for more fuel efficient designs while also allowing the scout to reach emergency speeds of warp 8 or more. One of the major changes to the Fruit class vs the Waterfall class was in the impulse engine used. In a surprise windfall Unity operatives in the Triangle secured the designs and a single sample of the Klingon's KID-1 impulse system from credit starved members of the IKS. Unity engineers soon found ways to replicate the original design for use elsewhere, but Cruz's workers took it one step forward and revised it to also be more fuel efficient then the original design. Now dubbed the KUID-1 system two of these motors were placed on the Fruit class providing it was fast movement and power at sublight speeds. The original KSE shield system was also replaced by another windfall for the Unity's operatives in buying first generation plans and a sample of the Romulan's RSE shield system. Returning it to Unity space they soon converted it into the KURSE system providing more efficient power protection then the Klingon design on the Waterfall. The OD-5 disruptor was replaced by the KUD-4 variant with the original forward mountings in place, but aft mountings were also added. As designs on the weapon systems continued R'Archer happened to show up 3 months into the design process with a surprise of his own. An uncle within the Andorian Imperial Guard had sent him plans and a sample of the Andorians AH-8 phaser system! While of moderate power output for damage it did have an extreme and accurate range. R'Archer deemed it necessary to put this on the Fruit class. This system unlike others remained untouched from the original Andorian system replacing the KD-1 Disruptors found on the Waterfall. While this reduced the overage arc coverage it was felt a sufficient pay off in the end. As a final addition to the class's weapon systems the Unity's variant of the Orion OP-7 torpedo system the KUP-7 was installed in the forward arc. As a final measure of design, light armor plating and structural reinforcement were placed on the class. Extensive research labs and sensor systems also rounded out the final design. By the end of 2268 R'Archer was delighted to once more find that the Unity's engineers had outdone themselves with his request producing 6 scouts ready for crew and deployment, and after briefing the Unity's Congress additional requests were placed for a production of 2 per year.
