Back story for Manual

An attempt to create a heavier combat unit, the Marauder class sacrifices cargo capacity for the extra weapons. Starfleet Intelligence believes that a number of powerful merchant families arranged a trade agreement with the Romulans to obtain the Romulan computers, impulse engines and shield generators used on these vessels. Some vessels have stealth capabilities built in making it harder to lock sensors onto them, and unconfirmed rumours state that some may have a cloaking device!

Because of the heavier weapons load, Starfleet has started to classify this type as a blockade cruiser, as it can both slug it out, and still fire aft while fleeing a blockade line!

Used by the families who financed them as “enforcer” vessels, they keep the numerous smaller raiding vessels under their control throughout Orion space and beyond in check, in the event that someone is rocking the boat and attracting unwanted attention to various “operations”!

My Designers notes

As shown at the top, the model I used was the Aerotech TR10 Transit fighter.

I created this vessel originally in 1992 as a foil to the top range Federation Loknar class frigate, hence the CE noted. It has a similar CE figure to the Wanderer class as well, so it’s not too expensive in campaign terms. Never have totaled up what the vessels costs in MCr terms, but that’s why I limited their number.

As there were no extended component stats that I was aware of back then, I came up with the idea that if the Marauder was a straight up combat vessel, I would use the Romulan components to allow the ship a bigger impulse engine, less efficient but heavier shields, and allows a higher weapons load. The payoff was the added weight of the extra computer cut the cargo capacity. It was one of only a few Orion vessels in our gaming group to have as extensive a technology transfer, it was usually only having various torpedoes, ala the FP-1’s on the official Wanderer. I kept the Orion flavor by keeping a front/rear split with the beam weapons with more forward, and concentrated three torpedoes forward, with one aft. Hence the classification of “blockade cruiser”. The “enforcer” idea is from SFB of course.

The way our group designed ships, whatever was left in the tonnage class covered by the warp engines Movement rate capacity after construction as completed was usually listed as the cargo capacity. Thus the Marauder has hardly any spare cargo capacity being at the limit of Class V at 2/1 movement ratio. Don’t think the Manuals did it that way, but that was the FASA designers choice.

Back story for Manual

As the more powerful families were arranging the deals that would result in the Marauder class, smaller families without the same far reaching influences decided to design their own "enforcer" vessels. Using mainly Orion equipment, along with smuggled and copied Federation torpedo technology, these vessels were also used in smuggling and small raids, where their high warp speeds were a great advantage in case a naval vessel arrived to interrupt their "business"!!!

Rumors abound that some models may have experimental plasma weapons, but the Orions seem to be having difficulty duplicating Romulan Plasma technology, hence the low intelligence data level.

My Designers notes

As shown at the top, the model I used for this design was the Silent Death Shark/Glaive fighter.

I created these vessels originally to counter the Federation and Klingon destroyers, and gave them different torpedo loadouts to simulate the weapons options of SFB designs. The wings on the Glaive model justify the wide arcs of the side beam weapons. This gives these vessels a large punch forward (6 beams and 3 torps), but still allows for some fire aft if needed.

The experimental plasma idea was originally to use the RPL-3 graze damage as a Orion plasma weapon (full weapon weight and SS value, but half damage), with blocks of two points of damage like in some editions of the Construction Manual. This would give the Orions a weapon that would cripple freighters instead of blowing them up. Myself and another player in our group then combined our two preferences. My OPL-2 uses the above Plasma Damage table.

Assassin class raiders appeared in the first decade of the new century. Starfleet Intelligence noticed raids on merchant shipping were on the increase, and believe that their introduction was galvanised by the interdiction of the Orion slave trade on Stardate 2/0105.01.

These vessels became fairly common along the border of Federation space, and within the Triangle. They seem to be used by both the larger families and some 'independant' raiders. Intercepted reports seemingly reveal that even Klingon harrassment was also taking place. It is unclear whether the Romulans have been in contact with this class.

Over the years, three main models came to light, the Model A originally came on par with the Larson class destroyer, and later models rival the Baker class. There is a gradual increase in available power and weaponary, although the Model C is less maneuverable. But since approximately 2/15, reports seems to indicate that the older Model A are being refit with small differences in their weapons layout, including torpedo upgrades. A few have had their shielding upgraded to match the later variants.

These Orion vessels are noted to be currently using apparently copied Federation torpedo technology (the relatively new FP-7) other than the FP-1 found on the Wanderer class. Industrial espionage is suspected.

Slight increases in size indicate a greater cargo carrying capacity in the later models, helping pirates haul away bigger 'bounties' from their raids. Unusual for vessels of this type, it is landing capable, which unfortunately helps the Orions in their 'trade'.

My Designers notes

An Aerotech "Sholagar" Aerospace fighter was the model I used for this design.

These were among the first Orion designs I created to supplement the Lightning and Wanderer that FASA created. I originally took the Orion CR (Raider Cruiser) design from SFB, and after looking at the Constitution class in both games, transposed it over to FASA on that basis of comparison.

They were designed to counter the Federation Larson and Baker class destroyers in CE terms, as those classes were easily modeled with FASA minis available at the time. The model A1, B's and C were created first, and I went back and added the A2 and A3 Models with different weapon loadouts to simulate the weapons options of SFB designs. This decision led onto the Master Assassin class with different torpedo suites already shown above in this thread.

In my games, these therefore represented the most common raiders in my Orion fleets. Date wise, they fit between the Lightning and the newer Wanderer class.

Hahaha. The Sholagar! Cut the tail fins off (carefully), file the area smooth, mount the fins on the nose, either to the side, both on top, or, even more creatively, one on top and one on the bottom, and make a pair of nacelles from some styrene tubing (unless you have some small ones from an old Federation vessel), and fly it "backwards". When my girlfriend gets back from her cousins wedding next week, I'll show you mine (She's got the camera).

The Thrush, also a Battletech Aerospace fighter with a circular wing, looks really cool with a nacelle or two mounted on the nose and flown backwards. The tailfin on the Thrush is a one piece upside down U shaped thing that really gives it a unique look when used backwards.

Swede, while I've only used a couple of minis 'upside down' (Shilone, Stuka), I have a feeling I should be asking you to start up a thread with pics entitled "Swede's Backward Flying minis"!

I always wondered why the Thrush mini looks just like a sligthly smaller Sholgar with the fins cross linked like that. But then again, in real life, Fighter jets look very similar to each other these days.

And I never thought about flying the Sholgar backwards, but with the right nacelle look, it would make a cool, small Starfleet vessel. Looking forward to seeing your take on it.

Backstory for Manual

Believed to be a relatively recent development, the Thunderer class is similar to the Marauder Blockade Cruiser, but with a missile biased armament.

Built on the spaceframe of an old Orion design, the Drakar class ore barge, these vessels have been refitted with modern systems and armaments, including what seems to be another transfer of Romulan equipment, seen in the shielding and cloaking devices believed to be on some of this class.

Starfleet became aware of the class after discovering a drifting hulk near the edge of the Starbase 28 patrol area adjacent to the Triangle on Stardate 2/2010.11. This gave the basic stats of what is now called the A1 variant. The vessel had been severely damaged by disrupter fire, but also showed evidence of having been thru a severe ion storm. Only basic data could be retrieved from the computer cores. Perhaps the attacking Klingon or Romulan vessel or vessels had broken off their attack due to this storm, explaining why they hadn't claimed the hulk as a prize.

The second variant came to light after intercepted transmissions from Klingon forces near the Kinkuthanza system, a major Klingon trading system near the border with Federation space. The Orion vessel was apparently blasting its way thru a Klingon blockade, for unknown reasons. Sensor drones recorded aft fire from beam weaponry, and from an addition aft torpedo.

As always, Orion Sector Intelligence is endeavouring to gather further information on this class. It is possible, given the Orion propensity for either smuggling weaponary, or just plain copying them, that heavier armed variants may exist.

My Designer notes

Designed to give the Orions another heavy hitter, and to be similar to the Federation Andor, Klingon FU-12 and Romulan Firehawk missile cruisers. This class of course has the Orion flavor/bias of forward and aft torpedoes only.

Back story for Manual

Recently, Starfleet sources brought to light an unsettling new development in Orion spaceborne assets. On Stardate 2/2106.09, the Military Operations destroyer USS Pendragon was on patrol near system TR-20710 in the Triangle, when it picked up fragments of an encrypted transmission coming from the nearby asteroid clusters at the edge of the system. Upon investigation, the Pendragon came under fire from two Assassin class raiders running interference for a larger vessel of unknown design that may have decloaked and was attempting to run from the Pendragon.

The unknown vessel then opened fire on the destroyer, damaging her severely, including disabling her warp drive and crippling her main sensor array. Luckily the Orions then fled the system, either thinking that the destroyer would succumb to her wounds, or just protecting their unknown design from further scrutiny. However, the Pendragon managed to repair herself sufficiently to return to Federation space and report her findings.

The unknown design visually appeared vaguely similar in configuration to the Pearl class Mobile Drydock. Details in the sensor data indicated that it was of much more massive construction, while still being warp capable. The vessel appeared to have sensor masking materials, including trititanium, that have appeared over the years on various Orion designs, Data also seems to indicate that various components, including the warp engines, and possibly the deflector shields were of Klingon construction, probably to counter the fact that Orion warp drives and shields are more efficient on smaller designs, unlike this class, which apparently weighs in at Class X.

The conclusions are the Orions have yet again been trading with an nominal enemy power while gaining advantage for themselves. What unknown benefit the Klingons have gained is still unclear at this time.

The firepower on this class is impressive, including Klingon photon torpedoes. Starfleet Intelligence speculate from the sensor data and vessel configuration that the class is used as a mobile pirate base, able to hide in systems with extensive asteroid belts or clusters thanks to its sensor masking capabilities. It may also be possible that other vessels of this type may have been built in-system in star systems with ship building facilities, disguised as an ordinary drydock structure. While over the years, certain planets or systems have been known havens of Orion pirate activity (eg the planet Motherlode in the Arturan system at the edge of Triangle and Federation space), this new type of vessel would lend itself to spreading Orion influence even further afield, while providing shelter and supply to Orion vessels. The possibility of such a design being able to service more than one vessel at a time, due to the presence of external docking ports indicated in the Pendragon sensor data is another alarming detail being discussed by Intelligence analysts.

An engagement with a similar but smaller vessel the following year near Zeta Persei shows that the Pendragon encounter was not with the only vessel of its type, Comparisons with the sensor data of the two battles show small but significant differences in engine output, which are hard to fake if the Orions had only one vessel and were attempting to make it look like there were more vessels built. The second vessel also seemed less armoured, but with a similar weapons load. Analysts believe that perhaps two different Orion cartels have built broadly similar vessels. However, it is useless to speculate how many more of these vessels may have actually been built, or whether there may be yet more variants. Because of these similarities, Starfleet has decided for the time being to class these two scanned vessels as an A and B model of the same general class.

My Designers notes

As shown above, the schematics for the Federation Pearl class Mobile Repair Facility was used. The model I will paint up will be the Irregular Miniatures DYO11 Repair Dock model. Update to the above Pearl class schematic will be shortly.

David designed two different models for this, and I decided that they were both different models of the same class. Yes, the big difference is the superstructure and the smaller MPR on the Model B, but Orion designs don't exactly correspond to the usual vessels classes, so why should this be any different?

It gave the Orions something different to work with, and I think adds something unusual to the 'hunt the pirates' scenarios. Give it a try and see what you think.

Back story for Manual

After the discovery of the Orion Class X Mobile Logistics Base class on Stardate 2/2106.09, Intelligence sources and assets were instructed to determine whether the Orions may be diverting further resources to expanding their influence and capabilities. The various Sector Divisions within Starfleet Intelligence pooled their resources, and a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge of Orion capabilites was compiled. However, new information came from an unexpected direction.

Over the years, as the Federation had dealt with the border incursions of the Klingons, Romulans and Orions on the galactic rimward side of Federation Space, Starfleet Command determined that they needed to expand operations on the coreward border. The border was more open coreward, but with nearby Tholian territory was to spinward. A decision on Stardate 2/1804 had been made to expand the Starfleet Yards at Antares, spearheading a new exploration drive on this frontier. A new Starbase was also proposed to be constructed there to support this endeavour. The base was designated as Starfleet Headquarters 2, with construction proceeding swiftly, with the new facility coming online on Stardate 2/2306.15.

So imagine the surprise when on Stardate 2/2409.15, the Loknar class frigates USS Jezar and USS Mulandra, patrolling near the Tholian border, detected a vessel beyond Federation space, apparently of Orion design! Now code-named Conqueror by Starfleet, in configuration, this new vessel appeared to be a larger version of the Marauder class Blockade Cruiser, weighing in at Class X. Sensor data revealed that the vessel again had Klingon components onboard, and based on the engagement, it also possessed significant firepower! Boasting EIGHT OD-4 disruptors, and apparently at least FOUR Federation-copied photon torpedoes, the vessel had disruptor emitter ports over multiple arcs. It was determined this vessel would possibly be an even match for a Mk I Enterprise class cruiser in a one on one engagement! Visual scans show what appear to be three large shuttlebay doors on the dorsal hull, hinting at a large shuttle complement. After a running battle, the vessel then disengaged from the Starfleet vessels towards Tholian space at high warp.

It is a troubling development in the Galactic socio-political arena if the Orions have decided to spread their influence that far from home, and may be in contact with the noticebly 'territorially aggressive' Tholians, potentially throwing an unstable element into already shaky Federation/Tholian relations. With the development of the Mobile Logistics Base design, who known how many assets the Orions already have available in the region?

Intelligence assets were again ordered to try and ascertain what advantages this gives the Orions. Further enquiries discovered that there may a more heavily armed variant, which is listed above as the Model B. Other questions to be answered include how many more of these vessels may exist, confirmation of whether the Orions ARE in contact with the Tholians, and what further gains the Klingons have made in this latest technological exchange. While not anywhere near as extensive as the exchange with the Romulans, the fact it has taken place shows that the Orions have something to offer the Klingons. Copied Federation torpedo technology did not surprise Intelligence analysts, however.

Starfleet Command and Starfeet Intelligence are both keeping a wary eye on further developments.

In the back story, the idea of SFHQ2 comes from stories in our RPG games (thanks Mike). Although the FASA maps were based on the old "Star Trek Maps" by Bantam Books (en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek_Maps), but at a smaller scale, I used the original larger scale and orientation of those Maps in our games. These might differ slightly as to Galactic directions from the FASA layout, but I preferred these in our games.

I set the Stardate of the encounter at the high end of the official original TOS FASA timeline to allow for this to be probably the biggest Orion vessel that could be built with the original Construction Manual stats, even though it used 'borrowed' tech from the Klingons and the Federation! I seem to remember that it did indeed 'bloody the nose' of an Enterprise Mk I cruiser in one of our games!

Backstory for the Manual

First observed in the Starhaven orbital port in the Motherlode system on Stardate 2/2212.04, the Superlightning class appears to copy the Klingon practice of upscaling a vessel design, as seen in the various Bird of Prey class vessels (the K-22, D-32 and L-42 designs)!

It is belieived that this Orion vessel was originally built by two small cartels that did not have as far reaching resources or contacts as the main families. Each were unable to design their own vessel, or to obtain torpedo weapons, but by pooling their resources, this raider was built by simply upscaling the plans of the ubiqutous Lightning class blockade runner, resulting in a larger vessel!

Constructed around two OD-5 disruptors as main armaments, these are supplemented by OD-3 weapons covering all other arcs. Although using the powerful OWA-2 warp engines, a decision was made to make the vessel less maneuverable than the Wanderer class, but faster in the strategic sense, cruising at Warp 7 compared to Warp 6 in the case of the Wanderer. The class can carry nearly 20,000mt of cargo in a large central cargo hold, a consequence of the larger design, and a respectable amount for a raider.

The design seems to be a modest success, and has appealed to some independent raiders, and it is believed that the two families lease these vessels at a modest profit. So far, more than a dozen different single vessels have been reported along the Federation/Klingon border, and as far into the Triangle as the Mantiev Colonial Association, although convoy harassment may have occurred throughout the whole Triangle region. There have even been reports of Romulan engagements. This is seen as a positive affirmation of the decision to give this class a high cruising speed.

Furthermore, Orion Sector Intelligence has determined that at least two further variants exist, when it discovered on Stardate 2/2403.12 that three vessels had recently been purchased by the Orion Frontier Mercantile Association for defensive purposes. The OFMA navy then retrofitted two FP-1 torpedoes in place of two OD-3 disruptors. One vessel has the torpedoes bearing forward, and the two others have a torpedo bearing forward and aft. It is believed that the A2 variant acts as a leader of the squadron of three vessels, and the squadron is thought to have been tasked in protecting OFMA space from IKS raiders. Their high warp speeds give them excellent response times if on the opposite border from any incursions into OFMA controlled territory. The vessels have been reported as being named "Pride of Orion", "Hope of Orion" and "Treasure of Orion"!

As this weapons suite is still within the maximum capability of the Mark IV computer, it is expected that further variants may well be developed in future, and Starfleet Intelligence continues to monitor the situation closely.

My Designers notes

A design and backstory to justify using the Irregular Miniatures DYD5 Javelin Class Light Cruiser mini which is styled on the FASA Lightning mini!

I've been trying to come up with a design and backstory for quite a long while, real life matters this year have kept me from sitting down and getting it done. Gorn might like this, as he has designed stats for an Orion heavy hitter that he plans to represent with the same mini. But here's my take on it for all to see.

My intuition tells me one of these Superlightnings would give a pair or trio of Kephan Chain Lightnings a solid pummeling. For in essence, one Chain Lightning is two copies of the Lightning welded together and slightly expanded.

I wonder how it would do against a Constitution or Loknar in battle? Or it's Romulan or Gorn counterpart? A fascinating thought experiment, to say the least.

I got hold of 2 superlightnings. Haven't painted them yet. The support pylons aren't as straight as I would like. Good to have in the fleet, though.
I belted together something quick; haven't playtested it yet.

As I've said in my minis thread, in the FASA STSTCS construction system, it's possible to design lots of really fast, maneuverable little corvette/cutter/gunboats, and here's a few minis that we used to represent them. I think the first two designations are correct! Backstory for the Manual

Over the years, Orion Sector Intelligence has gathered information on a varied selection of Orion designs, ranging from Assassin class raiders to the Conqueror class heavy cruiser. It should be noted however that modern Orion technology also allows for particularly small, fast and highly maneuverable vessels at around the Class II - III tonnage classes. These seem to be a throw back to what the Orions called 'interceptors' over a century ago, just prior to the formation of the Federation.

The specifications provided above show two distinct types with a few variants each, that almost seem to be crew modules attached to warp nacelles! Heavily armed for their small size, and using stolen or copied torpedo technology, like the Aral class blockade runner, these classes will have many near 'cousins' of similar tonnage. The various armaments will be due to whatever the various cartels supply to the vessels at hand. Some shield upgrades seem to have been refit to all models of the Buccaneer class in recent years. Even the hull forms can differ, while having similar performance stats and weapons loads.

These vessels have been noticed as hunting in packs of three or more vessels. In greater numbers, they can even be considered a danger to Starfleet destroyers and above. It is advised that great care in taken if trying to engage with said packs in a single vessel, as even experienced Starfleet commanders can be caught unawares. They are used to harrass various convoys by swarming and picking off the trailing vessels while the others run. They work in concert with a loan raider which will carry off any stolen cargo. They have also been observed as being used in defense of Orion Mobile Logistic Base class vessels recently uncovered by Starfleet Intelligence.

My Designers notes

As you can see from the stats, the 1/1 movement ratio can even be used on twin warp drives, so they are VERY maneuverable! The pic shows some small minis that I have in my collection, painted up in Orion colours. I wrote it into the backstory that various hull designs are used, so if you want to use the stats, use whatever minis you have to hand.
