So as some of you may have noticed on some of my designs for the Unity I make a note of the shuttle count and type used. Up till recently I just sort of assumed they were cast of TOS era shuttles or whatever else the Unity could get their hands on. However, last night my wonder buddy Brandon designed the Pew Pie variant of the Type-1 (Or Type-F in TOS canon!) armed shuttle. After a bit of back and forth on it we were able to come up with the following backstory!
In late 2259 the Unity was more or less in full swing in building up their junk navy. With that of course came many cast offs of various shuttles from various powers. All having different parts, systems, and needs. While this was fine for most. One fresh up and comer to the Unity, a man by the name of Francis Pharoah happened to be in attendance at a party for many of the more successful ship builders. Of course being a 'nobody' among the bigger wigs not much attention was given to his presence. But during a vigorous drinking session and poker game, Francis happened to face off with several of the corporate faces to these same firms. After two hours Francis sadly was a broken man, he was down to his last chips, but he had what he thought was a winning hand, a four of a kind made up of Queens. The other three contenders were like him, drunk off their arses but far more successful in winning. With the last of his chips put in he proposed to raise the stakes of this final hand. Curious the men with him inquired what he meant. He proposed that the winner of this hand was paid to design a standardized, warp capable shuttle, but one which was also in some form armed, and it would be funded and approved by the other three losers. After a round of laughs the three men agreed, and went all in. When the hands were revealed Francis was delighted much to hsi relief to find he had won! Basking in his glory and the amazing cash flow of credits too from his last minute gamble the men grumbled a their loss but agreed to hold to the deal.
Several days later after recovering from their various hangovers, the four men met with many of their engineers. The basis for their design was the fairly common Type-F shuttle cast offs from Starfleet. Normally these shuttles were sublight only, unarmed, and beyond basic navigational deflectors basically useless for anything but cargo, personnel transport, and such within a system or within a short range of their mother ship. Francis outlined his plan to 'upgrade' the Type-F. The engineers thought he was crazy, and some commented he was probably some long lost son or cousin of Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz. But Francis pushed ahead determining it was possible to take the idea and apply it to almost every form of shuttle within the KUSN, for now though they would focus on the Type-F.
After 2 months of hard work, the collective team of engineers and designers produced the Pew Pie Class I Armed Warp Shuttle. It was essentially a single nacelle Type-F with much of its original passenger capacity gutted and internal space taken up by the new systems. But when all was said and done upon review the KUSN reviewers did like it. The Pew Pie was controlled by 1 or 2 pilots, coupled with the Orion built Mark-1A system. The port nacelle on the Type-F was removed and in its place the hull expanded to include the Orion OP-4 torpedo launching system with its feeding rack and storage along the rear of the craft. The original sublight engine was replaced with the Federation model FIA-3 system, and for protection the FSA shield array was built into the hull plating. Finally the starboard nacelle was removed and a single Orion OWB-2 system was put in its place. Finally much of the larger passenger capacity was removed to make space for the remaining equipment and life support systems. Bringing the total capacity to 2 passengers, though this meant everyone was quite literally knee hugging each other. Quite uncomfortable but all in all sufficient. The vessel just barely came in under the weight limits for a Class I vessel, but even fully loaded was surprisingly maneuverable and speedy for warp travel. The limited torpedo capacity was considered a hindrance for prolonged dogfights but given the generally weak nature of the shuttle anyhow this was again felt fine.
In the end Francis Pharoah's design was approved and plans were drawn up to apply the concept to 1/2 of all Type-F shuttles within use by the KUSN and their colonies. Further the template was approved for use on other race shuttle types that came from the Orions and Klingons. While Francis would never rise to the fame of some, his contribution to the KUSN's need and mission could not be ignored either and would secure him a posting among his new employers within the K'nip Shun Scrapyards in the years to come.
