A stand off weapon allows you to hit a target outside the normal ranges of an enemy's own weapons. Hold the lion at bay type thing. the problem with that is I have been allowing my students to try to conduct a what if cold war campaign in Cold Waters and Jane's Fleet Command platforms. here both sides were equipped with stand off munitions.
I have noticed the tendency to waste such weapons on lower value targets..say a UUM-125 Sea Lance being fired at Romeo class boats and the Soviet players doing similar things with stand off weapons. These weapons need to be saved for modern boats and the likes.
i set back and watch when they have expended the stand offs and have to deal with a torpedo duel and so on...
They get impatient and not recognize their targets...this is their lesson in using the right weapons for the right targets and tactics

So essentially, they're firing for the sake of it, rather than tactically? Good lesson to learn. Correct. I do have a couple of students who have grasped what can be done with weapons like Sea Lance, VLASROC, ASROC, and the Soviet equivalents. I have one student who has mastered the art of gaining the proper fire solution and who understands how to use his Mk. 48 ADCAPS very well. This young man also has a grasp on how to use the Nimrod and P-3 Orion platforms as well. This kid has a grasp for ASW work. I took the job to teach tactics for a high school Jr. ROIC class and I am having a wonderful job of showing these kids of what a proper blue water navy can do...And i like doing this by teaching them history as well.
