When scanning normally with sensors for information on ships or resource detection, add +1 to detection chances.
When scanning for cloaked ships, add +1 to detection chances.
While firing on cloaked ships, reduce penalty to hit to -2 for moving vessels, and -4 for stationary vessels.Backstory for the ManualMove and countermove. Espionage, intrigue and skulduggery. All part of the machinations of the various Intelligence communities. But sometimes, a coincidence is just that, a coincidence! Or is it? Intelligence analysts continue to debate the issue!
Since the discovery of the Romulan S-14 and then the Klingon D-67/68 Intelligence scout designs, within Starfleet Intelligence, the various Sector Desks have been trying to determine if other powers have such capabilities. The Orion Desk has determined that while Orion mobile influence has extended well beyond Gorn and Tholian territories, they seem to be relying on either stealth hulls, occasional cloaking devices, or other technology exchanges (mainly Klingon). The Tholians remain as inscrutable as ever, despite said nearby Orion activity. The Gorn Desk however has brought new information to light.
So, are the following vessel types influenced by the Federation, Romulan and Klingon Intelligence scouts?
The initial encounter was observed by a Model Q
Tavares freighter, travelling near star system GS-2022, just within the Outback near the Federation border. On Stardate 2/2611.01, the vessel was almost disabled by a massive sensor energy pulse from a particularly dense asteroid cluster at the edge of the system. When ships functions were stabilised, further investigation, using nearby asteroids as cover, revealed an unusual slender Gorn wedge-styled design, with various sensor devices protruding from the central hull. There was a lengthy forward lance like protruberance with two shorter parallel lances close by at the bow of the main hull. About half way along the lower forward wedge were four more short spikes, swept forward at 45° angles to the vessel centreline. At the centre top, there was an oval device emenating sensor sweeps. With a pair of typical Gorn nacelles slung under the main hull, the design was completed with two rearward hull struts, one dorsal, one ventral conected at the end with a vertical connection sail, which appeared similar to the passive sensor sail of the
Carerra class! Despite being almost 200m in length, the main hull was approximately the same volume as a SS-3 Destroyer.
Almost immediately, despite their careful approach, the Gorn vessel challenged the
Tavares class, indicating a sophisticated sensor suite. But before further communication could be pursued, an off screen voice was heard to exclaim that a target lock had been acquired, and communications were abruptly cut. Thinking they were about to be fired upon, the crew initiated evasive maneuvers, but were surprised when the Gorn vessel opened fire on what appeared to be empty space about 40,000km ahead of itself, and our Intelligence vessel observed weapon strikes from three of the four blaster shots and the single energy torpedo fired! Continuing their escape, sensor readings just before the
Tavares class went to warp revealed a damaged V-8
Bird of Prey decloaking and attempting to go to warp. The Gorn vessel also jumped to warp, and easily kept pace with the fleeing Romulan, which was clearly crippled. As the
Tavares fled in the opposite direction at maximum warp, in case the Gorn attempted to pursue THEM, they detected a massive explosion as the V-8 was destroyed, and the final sensor readings indicated that the Gorn vessel had turned towards the Hegenomy border at Warp 7, presumably to limit any further scans from what they thought was a simple freighter.
The readings were forwarded to the Gorn Sector Desk, and analysts poured over what had been recorded and observed. Unlike similar sized Gorn vessels, it seemed more maneuverable than most. Although the blaster and torpedo types identified were mid ranged (140,000km), unlike other classes earlier discovered Model A vessels, they both had autohit capacity at short range.
Intelligence analysts and engineering staff have determined from the recorded sensor readings that the Gorn vessel, with its varied sensor arrays, may be a specialised scout specifically designed to detect cloaked vessels, as well as resource detection. It appears the sensor lances and spikes may be the cloak detection system (and the system that almost disabled our Intelligence vessel), the sensor pod may be the general sensor system, and the rear fin a passive array.
Such a vessel seems quite the technological advance in capabilities for Gorn scouts, multifunctional in scope, and seemingly in line with perceived tension increases between the Hegenomy and the Star Empire in the Outback region. Intelligence and Starfleet assets were informed of the new vessel type, designated as a CD-3 Scout, because of its slender profile which vaguely matched the CD-2 Scouts' long slender profile compared to other Gorn wedge-like designs.
Over the next several months, a few similar vessels were observed at long range by various Starfleet assets, until a new development was uncovered.
On Stardate 2/2710.11, the
Ranger Mk.III Scout
USS Amareth, patroling in the Outback region between Beta Vulkrus and the Isco system, and returning towards Federation space, detected at long range towards the Hegenomy border a battle between a Romulan V-103
Mauler Type 2 cruiser and a more heavily armed Gorn CD-3 vessel, in concert with a MA-12 Cruiser.
This variant had longer ranged blasters (160,000km tactical range), FOUR GP-3 energy torpedoes (twin tubes fore and aft), and was apparently less maneuverable. It was also
much more heavily armoured, hence the Class VI tonnage, resulting in the maneuverability change and slight drop in tactical warp speeds.
In tandem, the two vessels, having manuevered to bracket the
Mauler fore and aft, managed to cripple the Romulan. It had tried to overfly the CD-3 to escape, and took heavy damage from both sets of fore and aft energy torpedoes tubes fired by the Gorn destroyer. Both Gorn ships then took said V-103 in tow towards Hegenomy territory, which was believed to have been unable to self destruct due to Gorn boarding parties! The current disposition of the vessel and crew, once the three craft crossed into Gorn space towards Stellar Base 9, is unknown at this time.
This new discovery of what is being termed the destroyer variant has alarmed Intelligence analysts, concerned that an escalation of conflict in the region may be that much closer. Such vessels used in tandem with Gorn destroyers or cruisers could be devastating hunter/killer squadrons!
It is believed that the Model B, with its' heavier armaments and structural strength serves as both Scout AND Destroyer. The improved design may have been built due to the possibility of said increased tensions in the Outback region in the near future, as both the Hegenomy and the Star Empire search for unexploited systems not claimed by various independent systems or other powers in the region (Orions, Federation or Nicorri to name a few), and for tactical advantage if conflict does actually break out.
Merchant vessels filing flight plans into the Outback, whether Federation or independent, are currently being given travel advisories by Starfleet Command on that possibility as a precaution.
Diplomatic overtures on Clanhaven, the planet where the current Frontier Accords were negotiated, are currently trying to cautiously discern official Gorn intentions. There is also the possibility of another renegade faction attempting to destabilise the current situation in the region, similar to the event on Stardate 2/1906 now referred to the Maltharin II Incident, although the current Autarchs are believed to be cooperative with each other.
As ever in such cases, efforts continue to determine how many of these new vessel types may be in existence or especially, under construction. This is difficult, considering the near impossibility of having Intelligence operatives within Gorn society. In the meantime, all Starfleet assets in or near the region of appropriate security clearance level have been appraised of the new vessels capabilities.
My Designer NotesSo, here, FINALLY, is my take on a Gorn sensor sail variant!
As suggested by
brickwall , this design has sensor 'spikes'. I came up with the resource search speciality capability first, hence more 'spikes' than one or two sails, and then the tensions mentioned in "The Outback" supplement by
walrusguy suggested to me the enhanced cloaking detection capability!
And of course,
atolm s' AMAZING design made me change my backstory by quite a bit! Thanks again,
atolm , I am humbled you designed this ship for me.
In designing the stats, the Model A had a similar problem to the Klingon design in getting a viable vessel into Class V. Even using
walrusguy s' extended charts didn't give me much extra leeway. I wanted a relatively (for Gorn vessels) maneuverable ship at a 3/1 MPR, and thought I could get the four beams and two torpedoes, but in wanting to keep semi-decent binary shielding it slipped me into class VI by a couple of hundred tonnes with two torps and 14 SS. And unlike earlier official FASA Model A vessels, I wanted it to have firing charts with autohit capabilities, seeing this was two years after the latest FASA published dates. So four beams and one decent ranged torpedo it got.
Meanwhile, the Model B jumps to Class VI, and while retaining the advanced sensors, it's much more heavily armed, so it HAS to be classed as a destroyer. My rational? The sensor tech works, and with tensions building between the Gorn and the Star Empire, a heavier armed (and armoured) vessel performing resource and cloaked vessel detection was added to the Gorn fleet for use in the Outback region! So it got slightly longer ranged blasters, and four torpedoes!
The game mechanics modifiers are a nod to the vessels purpose, and hopefully not game breaking?
Hopefully doing
atolm s' design justice, we have a specialised Gorn Scout with multiple sensor equipment, that is, cloaked vessel hunting, standard AND passive sensors! And a bit different from the other three designs?
Again, this has been a LONG time coming. Thanks for bearing with me once more on a creative slump. Hope folks like this design stats wise and enjoy the interesting backstory.
