Ok, I've done some work on the Marklin. Of course, its a few steps back before we can move forward, so some detail is gone. but here is what I have. I'll post comparison pics so you can see what's been updated. First the front. I originally went way over the top with the poly count so I decided to tune it down a bit. Also I lengthened the nose of the ship a bit to better match the source image. When I first started the Sketchup Marklin I used someone else's redraw and by the time i found out it was wrong it would have been a lot of work to fix it so I just left it. However, since I rebuilt the whole front anyway I decided to fix it. I also made it taper slightly from top to bottom where it didn't before. Old New On the back I fixed the rounded corners to either side of the shuttle bay door. When I originally built this I didn't have any of the plugins that I have now that let me easily do this kind of geometry. Old New Of course, now I have to go back and redo a lot of the detailing, and I think I'm going to redo all the windows on the ship as well. We will see.

This is on of those ships, that should have gotten more play during the FYW. It was a tough ship...a good destroyer...
The class was better off then the Larson class destroyers that were the main destroyers of the Four Years War, but the backstory for the ship shows that even corruption and kick-backs still come to play in the 23rd Century. So in the story line this limits the ships to only 20 that were in the original production run.
They showed good characteristics in the war, but such a limited number, age of hulls by the war's end they were over 10 years old and new Larson class ships built during he war were still in excellent condition, and this lead to them being mothballed and just forgotten about after the war.
A fine ship with a "bad" history behind her.

I'm still waiting for the miniature to come out, either with or without the forward deflector dish. I liked both version JA, and hopefully someone with a modicum of scratchbuilding skill or a 3D printer can cobble out a few for the miniature black market. LOL

I'd be in for at least four.

This thread really isn't meant to be for general discussion of the Marklin Class, just for my sketchup model. That being said, the more I see that Marklin version the less I am impressed with it. I't doesn't match the source material very closely, and, even ignoring that, it looks like a low poly model you would see from a game from the '90s.

Thank you very much, this has always been one of my favorite ships from the Four Years War. One of these ships was Garth's charger at the Battle of Axinar in FASA's version of the FYW....it was one of the Federations best combat designs developed prier to the war and it was a shame that it wasn't put back into production
I love your rendition of her.....Thank You, Thank You Thank you
now we need a good mini...lol

JA this one is awesome! I'm not sure how I missed this thread.
I think a lot of modelers get hung up on this one because the top view, probably the only picture I know of. I can see what you mean now about the other ship, this one looks more star trekky.
Also are you starting a modeling shop?!

The only official image of the Marklin class destroyer is the top view from the Four Years War book. When I designed this model My one requirement was to remain as true as possible to that one official image. I have gotten pretty close. I took some creative liberty. The shape of the shuttle bay doors for example. Also I included an impulse engine that isn't shown in the official image. Other than that, everything about this model is consistent with the image provided by FASA.
I've considered opening a shapeways store but Sketchup is the only 3D software I work in and it is not very good at making printable meshes. most of my models aren't printable without extensive "repair" It doesn't matter for display, but it's critical for printing. The Marklin mesh isn't very complex and could probably be cleaned up pretty easily. That's why I asked what scale Cowboy40 wanted. I'll look into it, but I don't want to make any promises.

No pressure of course. Though in jest, I'll humbly suggest with the quality of your work the only reason not to do it is because you don't like money.

More details. I'm not completely sold on the deflector. I've still got the ability to remove it. Very nicely done! I respect that you wanted to stay as authentic as possible to the original image but I hope you don't mind if I prefer your earlier version above. If that had a bridge dome then it'd be the perfect Marlin in my opinion! Regardless, congrats on setting up the shapeways store. Will you be adding your other designs onto it in the future?

When I designed this model My one requirement was to remain as true as possible to that one official image. I have gotten pretty close. Is this why it doesn't have a traditional Federation "bridge" in the center of the saucer? It does seem to add to its odd appearance. Excellent work, though.

Very damn nice indeed.
Initially, I disagreed with the choice to go without a bridge dome, but I respect your resolve to try and stay as true as you can to the original drawing. It certainly signifies the Marklin as being quite different from the norm in Starfleet design.
I do agree with Rick (Sitzkrieg) about the deflector; I really like that version. It also gives the 'nose' a reason to be there, without jeopardising your resolution.
But extra kudos for extrapolating the Marklin so completely from that one drawing. A 2-dimensional object from three views is tough enough, but from just one view? Woah!
