This is a rare, old photograph series of the near-eternal Gallifreyan, the Doctor, where one of the versions of continuity has there being eight doctors, before the first televised one, William Hartnell, all 'played' by members of the Production Staff, dressed in garb from eras I guessed out, mapping correctly, before I had even seen the obscure pic here, 16th-19th century AD. I always preferred this way of handling continuity, and wondering just what the hell was going on, in those murky eras. ...I'm also a big fan of the Virgin New Adventures, too. Attachments:

Now in Brain of Morbius, there was a mental arm wrestling match, where Morbius was much older than the fourth doctor (Tom Baker) I understood the alternating pictures as a matching of wits, with all these characters being Morbius older selves instead--he was besting Tom Baker, who didn't have as many.

I thought that too. When I saw it I assumed that they were incarnations of Morbius. Since he lost the match after all. Funny the Doctor never told him who he was up against in that one. I remember the Doctor saying he was "a nobody". Later someone told me that those other faces were supposedly earlier versions of the Doctor. But still my first reaction when I saw it was they were Morbius.

...Could go many ways on it, I picked mine.
I think it's cool that they went all-out on that one. Different Historical Costumes, and all that.

It's never been explicitly stated in- show, but the general consensus for the last couple of decades is that they are Morbius' incarnations.
The actual truth, of course, is that they didn't think it through fully. So that's the only explanation that fits now-established canon.
