Could we get a side by side size comparison say with the Enterprise or something?

The Fenlon is huge! Here it is next to a Connie (not my model! just included for comparison) The difference in size is not readily apparent from just looking at them, but a sphere is a far more economical use of space. According to st-vs-sw.net a refit connie has an internal volume of 234,928 mΒ³. It's taking too long for sketchup to calculate the internal volume of the Fenlon, but a sphere with a 60m radius has an internal volume of 905,000 mΒ³. The Fenlon will be a little less than that since it has some depressions and such, but still it wont be far below that. To put it in perspective, according to st-vs-sw.net the Excelsior has an internal volume of 873,287 mΒ³. This little sphere is a bigger ship than the Excelsior! And it's supposed to be class V and have a crew of 76. It must be hollow!

I've got a strange fondness for the Fenlon - although I never thought it was much good in a fight.

Thanks for teh side by side, you are right though i've always taken the fenlon to be so small height and width wise vs the connie ignoring naturally the internal space take up each has. Anyhow thanks

I always thought it was a goofy looking ship but it kind of grows on you.

that rather unique thing she is, she reminds me of a super ball, and in combat she does keep bouncing back at you....
this ships actually fights fairly well for what she is

You have to realize something about the Fenlon class ships. these ships entered service during the Four Years war. they were one of the first classes of ships to be built with phasers as designed and well they have enough hull mixed with good shields to be able to stand up and hold against assault while forces are rushed in.
The one weakness the ship has is in its power output, but considering how she ship is fought, this really doesn't give it a drawback. those sublight engines actaully has a good movement ratio for a ship of her size.
Now in combat this ship would probably not be alone in the defense of the system it is protecting. it would be either working under the guns of a defense Outpost or it would have a couple squadrons of cutters working under the Fenlon's directions. In this case the Finlon would be a base of fire while the cutters were the mobile portion of the fight.
But it should be pointed out that this ship could stand toe to toe on its own with just about everything in the Klingon fleet except for the cruisers.
When I called this thing a super ball, I wasn't actually being to sarcastic.

I should rebuild this ship. It's excessively voluminous. I've resized ships before to better match their role and description. As I said above, as modeled this ship should be similar in mass to the Excelsior.

Ok, I've done it. I resized the Fenlon to more reasonably match it's class. A class V ship should have 1/3 the mass of a class XI ship. A 50 m sphere should have roughly 1/3 the interior volume of the refit Constitution class. Since a Fenlon class monitor has no warp drive, the most massive part of most ships I figured that a 60m sphere was not out of the question. Thus I give you the resized Fenlon with a 60 m diameter. I'll render a comparison shot with a 120 m Fenlon later.
