I wonder if Durret was a refit or replacement for Saladin and Hermes Class ships in the FASA universe of Trek

Not from what i understand. It is a low cost design for mass production. New design meant to lead destroyers or work in lower priority patrols on its own. It is a bit of a super destroyer in concept from what i can make out.

Wow, very good, Google has a fairly decent program there, and you sir. I say your skills are mastering it well.

Never got over the idea of a cruiser with only one warp drive - but still a good job.

Never got over the idea of a cruiser with only one warp drive - but still a good job. It reminds me of the Japanese light cruisers in WW2, which were basically glorified destroyers and designed more to lead DD squadrons than for independent action.

Yep - Kuma class and her predecessors. Pretty to look at, especially after having been gutted...

Same along the lines of the USN Atlanta class that replaced the Omaha class as flotilla leaders for destroyers in WW2

Ok - so, two of that class got themselves gutted... Big deal

Both the Atlanta class cruisers lost in World War II, were being fought in the wrong manner...They were placed on the gun line in a fleet action. These thin skinned light cruisers lacked in both protection and firepower. Even though the 5in/38 was a good duel purpose gun, it was never meant to engage a ship with armor plate. The Japanese ships they faced fired broadsides that consisted of around 6 inch to 14 inch shells that in some cases that almost doubled the range, let alone facing one of the best torpedoes, the Long Lance, of World War II.
The Atlanta class were built to destroyer standards...and they should have never been on the gun line in a fleet battle

Correct - and one of the worst engagements for a lightly built cruiser to get into!
Pretty ships, with glass jaws.

Correct - and one of the worst engagements for a lightly built cruiser to get into! Pretty ships, with glass jaws. But those little Atlanta class cruisers could throw up one hell of anti-aircraft wall....during the Kamikaze attacks in the late war, if one of these ships were in in carrier task force, they were always placed close to the flat top..

Second only to the Fast Battleships (and maybe the Alaska class)!

The Atlanta class were originally designed to be used as the leader of a AA escort group. They were only put in the gun line because so many CA's were lost or damaged in a very short time in surface actions.

I don't remember if they actually -intended- for them to be in the gun line at that time, or it just happened that way since the Japanese attack was somewhat of a surprise.

I always liked the durret, maybe it's just the modeler but it doesn't look bad at all in 3D.
Incidentally can sketchup designs be ported anywhere? For example for 3D printing?

It is possible to export sketchup models to other formats. Unfortunately my models don't really transfer well. I wanted to put some of them up on shapeways but they required a lot of clean up. Basically when push comes to shove its possible it would be less work to start over from scratch for a printable mesh. Oh, well.

On the one hand that's a crying shame but on the other I have spent enough over there already.
