Bushel Basket Class VIII Heavy Freighter/Colonial Transport -- Mark II
Some called it “The Great Embarrassment”. Others called it “The Swordfish Tragedy”.
Whatever the name, it was a bloody nose the Klingons gave the KUSN in their raid on the Anna Azalea Convoy. Both the Congress and the KUSN authorized a commission of investigation under Admiral Ektat Rarcher to analyze everything they could about the battle. The Rarcher Report was short and brutal but to the point.
The groan-inducing Swordfish destroyers did better than expected but failed in the end to protect their quartet of Bushel Baskets. Worse, the Swordfish itself was now a prize of war in Klingon hands. The colony ships were sitting ducks to enemy disruptors. The Chain Lightning destroyer didn't perform up to specifications.
The Report insisted at minimum that both the Chain Lightnings and Bushel Baskets needed upgrading and fast. Work started on the Bushel Baskets at once. The two disruptors were fitted onto the warp nacelles with reduced firing arcs. A copied Federation FH-2 phaser replaced the disruptors in the bridge, giving the class added firepower. The shields were upgraded to the KSE model, making them slightly tougher without draining energy reserves. Neither speed nor maneuverability were affected. Cargo room stayed the same.
All ships were recalled to the shipyards at the capital planets of Kepha, Cephas and Petrus, along with the mining world Acne and the tropical tourist world Aristungah. Refits of each ship reduced yearly production of new ships to four or one per shipyard.

Chain Lightning-class Class VII Destroyer – Mark II
In the wake of The Rarcher Report and it's review of the Swordfish Disaster, the KUSN demanded an upgrade of the Chain Lightning-class destroyers. The Anchor Co-operative, builders of the destroyer, brainstormed ways to improve the class without ruining it's potential.
Like many Orion-built craft, it's major weakness was in the shields. So the OSF shield generator was replaced with the stronger OSI generator to improve survivability. To calm fears of lack of power for the new shields, the twin OIB-3 impulse engines were swapped for a pair of OIC-2 engines. Weapons and warp engines would remain untouched for the moment. Passenger quarters were reduced from 25 to 20, with the additional space dedicated to impulse engine protection.
As with the Bushel Basket colony ship/freighters, yearly production of new destroyers were reduced from four to one. The other three were committed to refitting the Mark Is at the shipyard at Aristungah.

Waterfall Class V ScoutSo far, the brilliant but mentally ill ship designer Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz kept his employer K'nip Shun Scrapyards in business with the River frigates and Pegasus destroyers. Now the KUSN and Tri-Planetary Command (TCP) came to him looking for a scout design. Speed was of the essence in light of The Rarcher Report's findings, criticizing the Star Navy's lack of a indigenous scout to escort colony missions and explore new territories. Working on an idea that came to him while on a fly fishing vacation on the tourist world Aristungah, De Santa Cruz went to the pair of Klingon freighters rescued from the scrapheaps. It was the G-8 Traders Game class that appealed to him. It had the same problem as the L-6 Defender destroyer in that the warp engines were placed midships with a reverse-swept wing structure. So like he did with the creation of the River frigate, De Santa Cruz had a copy of the Traders Game made, then reversed the reverse-swept wings to make it more stable. Most of the cargo holds were removed, which improved warp speed. But unlike his past creations, he replaced the boom section with a copy of a Wanderer blockade runner bridge rather than a Federation saucer. Klingon and Orion scanners and sensors supported each other in the bridge at the expense of crew and passenger quarters. The majority of the ship's infrastructure remained Klingon from the KWB-3 warp engines and KIB-1 impulse engines to the KSE shields. The original disruptors on the G-8 were installed on the warp engines. A bank of two OD-4 disruptors from the Wanderer were built into the bridge. Room for shuttlecrafts were reduced to three. The class was immediately approved for construction at Aristungah, Acne and Monavees at the rate of six per year. Two went to the First Fleet on the Federation frontier, two went to the Second Fleet on the Klingon border and two went into the reserves. The class was named Waterfall after the major waterfalls of Earth, Vulcan and the Klingon homeworld Quo'nos. Beach Class VII Light CruiserDuring his fly fishing vacation on the tourist world Aristungah, the brilliant but mentally ill ship designer Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz was inspired to cook up an easily built light cruiser class for the Star Navy. Coming on the heels of his idea for the Waterfall-class scout, he scoured the recovered Klingon ships and purchased Orion vessels for his next project. The D-4 Predator, ancestor of the D-7, became the basis for the new ship. Like with the Waterfalls, De Santa Cruz replaced the Klingon boom with an Orion bridge. In this case, it was the bridge from the Freelancer blockade runner. It's pair of OD-5 heavy disruptors, he thought, would compensate for the lack of missile weaponry the ship had. Furthermore, unlike other ships within the Homebuilt Navy, the class had a rear firing disruptor for added protection. The warp and impulse engines, shields and side-firing disruptors remained unchanged. The ungainly looking prototype passed the now-prerequisite three shakedown cruises without a hitch. Production on the class is at Acne, Aristungah and Monavees at the rate of ten per year. The class is named after the most well-known beaches on Earth, Quo'nos and the other main planets within Federation and Klingon space. Dear friends and neighbors, I originally posted this on the Board under the name “chesterbelloc”. After 5 ½ years from that original post, I finally got both the stats and the proper picture for this ship. If the stats are out of whack, please let me know and they will be fixed. The backstory was also modified and updated. I hope it will bring color and flavor to any future battles and role-playing you all may engage in. Thank you all in advance. Onward and upward! + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Gryphon Class XI Heavy CruiserThe Federation's Star Fleet first named it the Miracle-class, it is said, for “it was a miracle it flew above one-quarter impulse power without exploding.”Their Klingon counterparts first called it the Mutant-class, it was claimed, for “it was unnatural to put an Earthling head on a Klingon body.”The Kephan Unity Star Navy (KUSN) christened it the Gryphon-class, for the mythical mystical beast that was half-lion, half-eagle. The lion was the “king of the beasts”, the eagle was the “king of the birds”. “Put them together and you have an emperor,” the ship's inventor said. Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz, the mentally ill starship designer, had great success with the Diamond-class frigate and Pegasus-class destroyer. So his employers at K'nip Shun Scrapyards tasked him with the ultimate challenge to his abilities – design and build a heavy cruiser to challenge their rivals in the Constitution and D-7 classes. Sporting a knowing smile, De Santa Cruz turned to his now veteran crew of Klingon, Human, Orion and Andorian builders, announcing the commission the Star Navy granted them. Now used to his wild plans and eccentric behavior, they spoke aloud what they thought it would look like. Taken aback in joy, he embraced each crew member and celebrated with a full Orion-style banquet for them all on his tab. Three days later, the heads of the Star Navy were aghast at what De Santa Cruz proposed. It fit the previous patterns with the Diamond and Pegasus. So as had happened before, the builder could make only one ship to test out his proposals. The Andorian half of his crew would construct a Constitution-class style saucer as close as they could to the original plans. The Orion half would copy the rear hull of the D-7A Painbringer-class the Kephans rescued from the scrapyards years before. Both halves would then be welded to each other. Four months later, the first Gryphon-class was built over Kepha, the H.H.S. Mount Calvary. It's shakedown cruise proved De Santa Cruz's confidence in the design was well-founded. The new cruiser was solid in construction, steady in turning and could achieve speeds of Warp 6 with ease. Changes in the Klingon half's internal structure increased shuttlecraft capacity to seven ships. Cargo, passenger and troop capacities were reduced in turn to lighten the ship's weight. Sensors and shields were adequate but just enough to get the job done. But it was the ship's combination of phasers and disruptors, inspired by the disastrous Swordfish-class destroyer, that got people's attention. When copies of the twin Federation photon torpedoes in the saucer hull were added, it gave the Gryphon the promise of delivering crippling blows in a battle's opening stages. So far, fifteen of these heavy cruisers have been built. Seven each has been assigned to both the Federation and Klingon borders. The last one, the H.H.S. Mount Carmel, is currently on “special assignment” under it's captain Anthony J. Wrenfield, PhD. Unconfirmed reports claim that two Gryphons will be built annually at either Kepha, Cephas or Petrus. brickwallAnother fine addition. I think you may have found the "Queen of the Kephan Star Navy"! This design, following on from previous designs, looks to merge the Starfleet and Klingon styles perfectly. There are quite a few FASA designs that don't look as good. But still fits in with the 'junk navy' concept, and I don't mean that in a bad way. This fits your concept perfectly. And they will be a BIG addition to the Kephans. This might get them noticed more! BTW, from the back story, it mentions a Diamond class. Another design you are going to post?

And yes, the Gryphons are their answer to both the D-7s and the Constitutions. They are the combination of both ships to the best of the Kephans' abilities. Only they would mix Federation and Klingon technology along with some Orion do-dads and make a star navy out of them. No wonder why the Klingons would call them "The Insane Ones". The Gryphons would belong more in the Homebuilt Navy, whereas the Junk Navy ships are the old ships rescued from Federation and Klingon scrapyards. My bad for not making that clearer in the post. And as mentioned in scattered posts here on the Board, James Kirk and the Klingon trio of Kor, Kang and Koloff will have their rival and counterpart in the person of Anthony J. Wrenfield, PhD, captain of the HHS Mount Carmel. He was a college philosophy professor that the KUSN drafted as a starship captain. Why? Unlike the Feds and Klingons, they have to make do with what little they got or could find, which Wrenfield was. As for the Diamond-class, it's probably a past design I forgot about and will have to either recover or remake from scratch. The Good Lord willing, I hope it won't take me as long as the Gryphon did. We'll see. Happy Easter!

Homebuilt Navy it is, of course, I stand corrected. As you said, and others have done for Orion designs, copies built of the respective hulls, put together by and as only the Kephans know how!

Pelican Class II Corvette
During the 2250's, the Kephan Unity Star Navy (KUSN) got news about the Spectre-class blockade runners that numerous Orion shipyards were building. So did the Anchor Co-operative, who got wind of the KUSN's call for a corvette class for system defense, customs interdiction and courier duty. Building on their success with the Chain Lightning destroyer, which were two Lightning-class blockade runners copied and welded together, their plan was to do the same things with the Spectre-class.
With the purchase and arrival of four different models of Spectres, Anchor went to work. Two of them were copied, with one flipped upside-down and welded to the bottom of the other one. The original OD-1 disruptors were replaced with the more powerful OD-2. Added to this was a copy of the OP-4 photon torpedo for an extra punch. The original weak OSA shields were upgraded to the stronger OSC type. Passenger room was cut in half to add extra shielding for the twin impulse engines.
Currently the class is built at the shipyards of the Triple Capital, as well as those of Acne, Aristungah and Monavees. Production currently is at twelve per year.

Albatross Class IV Command Corvette
The year 2270 dawned with the arrival of fourteen Orion-made Monon-class ore freighters into Kephan space. Seven each of the A-1 and A-2 models would make short work of any asteroid belt they mined. Anchor Cooperative's ship builders also saw potential in the design for a new system defense craft.
They cut the size of the Monon in half, reducing passenger and crew quarters as well as shuttlecraft space. Internal restructuring allowed room for installing a OP-4 photon torpedo. Disruptors and shields remained untouched.
Named after the largest sea bird on Earth, each Albatross would command a flight of three to six Pelicans. The class is built at Acne, Aristungah and Monavees at the rate o six per year.

Charette Class VII Heavy Cruiser
The KUSN was thrilled with the Gryphon-class heavy cruiser. But they also wanted a ship that was faster and cheaper. So they demanded the mentally ill but brilliant ship designer Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz for a cruiser class with less weight, greater speed and cheap construction. It was to be a "little brother" to the Gryphon. He promised to do his best.
Taking a hint from his earlier-designed Beach-class light cruiser and Waterfall-class scout, De Santa Cruz mixed ideas from both ships. He combined the bridge and front pod of a Wanderer with the rear hull of a D7C. Internally, the Orion disruptors in the Wanderer boom were replaced with copied Federation FH-3 phasers. The boom's passenger and cargo room were reduced to install a copied FP-1 photon torpedo. The rear-firing KD-6 disruptors gave protection in the stern that the Gryphons lacked. Part of the assault troop hypothermia capsules were also removed to lighten total ship weight. Yet during the shakedown cruises, the ship never got above Warp 6 in cruising speed.
The new heavy cruiser cost fifteen percent less than it's "big brother", which pleased the KUSN very much. The class was named after Francois De Charette, a hero of the French Counter-Revolution. In gratitude to the Orions for being the Unity's oldest trading partner, the Kephan Congress authorized a trio of Charettes given to the Orion Space Navy free of charge. They were assigned to the Klingon border on purpose to annoy their former occupiers.
The class is being built at Acne, Monavees and Aristungah at the total of six per year.

Another nice design, easily kitbashed in mini form too. But that shield ratio, 1/1 shielding, ouch! Yeah, I get it. If there is ever a Mark II for the class, the shields will have to be fixed and increased. But it needs battle-testing to see if it needs that and any other fixing.
And I'd love to see both the Charette and the Gryphon either modeled, painted or drawn. If Atolm could even do a sketch of either class, I'd pay good money for it.

Chesterton Class-XII Battleship
There was fierce competition between the Anchor Co-operative and K'nip Shun Scrapyards for KUSN contracts over the years. Comparisons to the “Cola Wars” on 20th Century Earth kept popping up when speaking of their rivalry. But there was one time when both companies joined forces to make the Kephan's ultimate command ship. Whether they should have done this or not remains a topic for fiery debate.
With the Unity's major neighbors designing and building battleships to maintain the balance of power, the Kephan Congress cried out for one of their own. They knew the Star Navy had nothing to counteract the Klingon's Ever-Victorious class or the Federation's Indomitable class. So they called the heads of both Anchor and K'nip Shun and demanded they join forces to make a battleship.
Anchor's board of directors dreaded dealing with the brilliant but mentally ill Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz, the genius of K'nip Shun. Quickly studying their construction trends, he proposed a craft on the same principles they used to make the Chain Lightning destroyer. But it would also use the Federation-saucer-to-Klingon-body pattern he made famous. Furthermore, it would be cost-effective by using copied parts of their rivals' best destroyers.
The bodies of two D-18B Gull destroyers – minus their command booms – would be built. One would be flipped upside-down and welded to the other. A copy of a Saladin MK I saucer would be set in the middle of the Gulls. The original KIB-2 impulse engines of the D-18s were swapped for copies of the Saladin's FIC-3s. The KSE shields were also replaced with the more efficient FSF variety. The warp engines remained as did most of the disruptors, phasers and photon torpedoes.
The troop contingent was assigned to operate the ship's twin shuttle bays, which held a massive 24 vessels. De Santa Cruz insisted the shuttles be copies of the Koreba W-2A, giving the vessel additional capacity as an old-style aircraft carrier. Anchor's directors said they'd consider his suggestion but made no promises beyond that.
Three ships were made at the Triple Capital. The class was named after Gilbert Keith Chesterton, the English author and journalist who co-inspired the Unity's founders long ago. The G. K. Chesterton was assigned to the Federation frontier. It's counterpart, the Hilaire Belloc, was sent to the Klingon borders. The third, named after Russian novelist and dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn, remained at the Capital.

I don't know who is the bigger genius here, Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz or yourself brickwall ! Absolutely love this! I am resisting (honestly) sitting down and trying to work out which ship you might try and weld together next!!! Another fine addition to the Star Navy. Kudos!

Good Shepherd Class VIII Q-Ship
Kephan freighter convoys had to travel the length of the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone to reach Orion space. During their trips known as the Orion Run, they were targets for Klingon, IKS or Orion raiders and the occasional Federation skirmish. Unlike their main rivals, they had few freighters to risk losing to such attacks.
As he did after the Anna Azalea convoy attack, Admiral Ektat Rarcher studied the results of each raid. Each convoy's defensive firepower was enough to drive away raiders but no more. Travel rules within the Zone forbade any explicit military escort for them. So Rarcher demanded a quick and cheap solution until something better was found.
Anchor Co-operative's governing board offered a solution. They pointed to the Q-ship concept Earthlings used during their Second World War. A warship was disguised as a freighter to hide increased defense from potential raiders. It stayed hidden in the convoy throughout the whole trip. Rarcher demanded proof using what could be copied from the scrounged and once-scrapped ships the Kephans had.
Anchor quickly responded. They proposed modifying a Liberty-class freighter by adding a rear-firing Orion OD-2 disruptor. Furthermore, the massive holds would contain launch bays for four Administrator C gunboats. Raiders up to destroyer-size would be repelled when facing an unseen strong convoy defense. In addition, the home-built Bushel Basket MK IIs would supplement them with the addition of two Administrators and their bays.
Intrigued, Rarcher demanded that Commerce Command find at least one Liberty to reshape. When told all were currently undergoing repairs, he got enraged. He stormed Star Naval Intelligence (SNI) for a solution and got one. Code-named Operation: Icewine after the Terran-based wine Rarcher enjoyed, SNI revived the dormant shell companies planted within Federation and Klingon space. They bought four Libertys and sixteen Administrators, sneaking them out through Orion space and the Neutral Zone.
Modified at their new shipyards in the Esperanza system, the four freighters were christened the Good Shepherd-class. Named after the most famous of Old Testament shepherds -- Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and King David -- each one escorted Orion-bound convoys with two remade Bushel Baskets renamed Sheepdogs. Since then, the Orion Run went much smoother for Commerce Command.

Saw your latest creation on the Facebook page, and came here to comment on it. Nice simple addition for your purposes. Are you going to run standard Administrator gunboats from them? Two little nitpicks with the backstory. One is simple. The Administrator types should be Model C, it's the Federation ships that use the 'Mark' nomliculture. The other point is I'm not sure personally that the IKS would raid that far from IKS space in the Triangle. At this point in the FASA timeline, they still guard their vessels jealously, as spare parts are hard to come by. Even if they only travel as far as Orion space to attack the Kephans, they've come along the Neutral Zone inviting attack from Federation and especially Klingon forces. But these are another fine addition to your Kephan storyline. Keep 'em coming!

And yes, they are standard Administrator Model Cs. For the Sheepdogs, the Good Shepherd's counterparts, they'll have to be Orion-made copies operating from them.
If the IKS did do a raid on the Kephans -- big "if", of course -- I figure they'd do so only on the border with Orion space. And only as a target of opportunity. You know, bragging rights on hunting one of "The Insane Ones".

Sheepdog Class VIII Q-Ship
Derided as the "Stack of Pancakes" by the Klingons and the "Flying Hamburger" by the Federation, the dumpy Bushel Basket-class freighter/colony ships got the job done. It's proven good reputation didn't protect it from pirate raiders and Klingon attack.
After the class's upgrading, then in light of Admiral Ektat Rarcher's order from Operation:Icewine, certain numbers of them were remade to add launch bays for two copied Administrator C gunboats. Pleased, Rarcher ordered Commerce Command to assign two of these small Q-ships, now named Sheepdogs, to every convoy on the Orion Run from now on.
Furthermore, he recommended that Survey and Colony Command do likewise for all future missions to expand populated Unity space. Losses to raiders reduced dramatically.
The new shipyards at Esperanza II and III build the Q-ships and gunboats at the rate of four per year.

Vendee Class XIII DreadnoughtThe birth of the most powerful of Kephan starships came about due to a wrongly taken joke. It was after the completion of the Chesterton-class battleships. During an Orion-style celebration banquet, a festive Admiral Ektat Rarcher joked before it's designer that he couldn't top his latest creation. He didn't realize that Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz's sense of humor was more twisted than rotini pasta. Thinking it was a challenge instead, the drunk De Santa Cruz boasted he could do it within a year with only one ship. Using the Chestertons as his pattern, he used the once-scrapped D-10D Riskadh heavy cruiser the KUSN rescued as the basis for his ship. The rear half of the Klingon ship was copied twice. The second copy was flipped upside-down and welded to the bottom of the first copy. Then as he did with the Gryphon-class heavy cruiser, he had a Constitution-class saucer made and mated between the two D-10D hulls. The original KID-2 impulse engines were replaced with copies of the FID-2 engines the Constitution-class had. The KSO shields were switched with the slightly more powerful FSN shields. Like the Chestertons, the ship kept all phasers, disruptors and photon torpedoes from the cruisers she was composed of. It also held twenty-four shuttles and their launch bays like the battleships. The space where hypothermia troop capsules would be was filled with an experimental control super-computer named the MZD-1. This was an attempt to fully harmonize Federation and Klingon controls over the ship from sensors to waste disposal. Due to working out the kinks in it's programming during the prerequisite three shakedown cruises, the behemoth could barely reach Warp 8 in an emergency. Nonetheless, a pleased De Santa Cruz presented the ship to Rarcher on his birthday and within two days of his self-imposed deadline. He named it “Vendee” after the area of northwestern France that rebelled against the French Revolution. No one recorded what Rarcher's reaction was to this “birthday present”. When Star Fleet Intelligence first sighted it near their border, they called it “Frankenstein” for the weird look of the vessel. The Klingons called it “Freak”, claiming it proved them right in calling the Kephans “The Insane Ones”. The ship was built at Esperanza III.

Another amazing design, brickwall. Kudos as always! I love how many designs you've managed to get from your 'copy and flip' design ethos. I think I've mentioned this before, but considering how some of us think that the lesser ships of all the empires are ugly due to the 'copy and paste' style designs, you've triumphed with your style! Again, a small nitpick! In your description, you mention that the troop hypothermia capsules are removed to fit the huge custom computer. That wording suggests they copy the capsules and then remove them? Perhaps change the wording slightly to say that the computer is fitted into the space where the original capsules would have been? To partially quote a famous Klingon Commander, "glorious"!
