When the NX 97000 Odyssey was first launched, Admiral Kzarai remarked : "It's not so much a starship as a warp capable starbase."
If the Ambassador and Galaxy class were the mainstays of 24th century exploration, then the Odyssey class is set to be the standard for the 25th century. Larger than any ship ever built it is the first ship in Starfleet that could not fit inside Starbase 1's Spacedock although the new and much larger Spacedock II is planned to be operational by 2425.
The Odyssey Class easily exceeds the Galaxy class in size and capability, able to carry more than twice the amount of personnel comfortably, though configuration studies have been made that would allow an Odyssey to carry up to three times the amount of personnel in times of crisis.
The bridge is exceptionally roomy. The Command deck for the Captain, Commander and Mission Specialist is larger than the entire bridge of a Constitution class. Next to the main viewer ten holographic workstations are operated by the bridge crew which can be configured to include up to three separate bridge functions at once. Another unusual feature is the 6-man transporter at the rear of the bridge.
The Odyssey marks a return to the policy of allowing family to accompany crew on their mission. Although this has put civilians in danger in the past the Odyssey has several features to protect the civilians on board.
A more advanced version of the saucer separation system based on that of the USS Prometheus allows the Odyssey to separate in less than 30 seconds. A combat emergency separation is possible and reduces the time to less than 15 seconds and uses the Slipstream drive to project the saucer section to a safe distance of up to 50 light years, keeping it out of reach of even the most determined foe.
The saucer section is fully operational and combat capable, although early drafts included a small warp drive, the slipstream drive was considered a far superior option as it would allow the saucer to cross vast distances should an Odyssey class encounter an emergency similar to the one that occurred to the USS Voyager, avoiding the risk that the crew and civilians are left stranded far away from Federation space. If the slipstream drive was not available the Aquarius class escort would be capable of towing the saucer section with their tractor beam and maintain a speed of Warp 6.
Because of the exceptionally large crew every department head has one or more department officers that aid in supervising all tasks. For example the Chief Medical Officer personally oversees one of four sick bays with a capacity of 40 and 4 separate operation theaters, three smaller sick bays with capacity for 15 people each and a single operation theater are scattered around the ship, not including the small medical bay on the Aquarius escort and the medical facilities on the Runabouts.
The Odyssey features the largest holodeck ever installed on a Starship it allows up to 100 people to participate at any time.
The Warp engines and Quantum Slipstream drive make the Odyssey the fastest ship in Starfleet despite its size. Two impulse engines mounted on the warp pylons and two more mounted on the Saucer section give the Odyssey great maneuverability.
Aside from carrying 32 shuttles, the Odyssey is large enough to hold up to four Runabouts and a Class VI Aquarius Escort. This gives the Odyssey greater flexibility, allowing for smaller teams to conduct independent research. The Aquarius Escort docked at the aft area right above the shuttle bay is patterned on the Defiant class Escort, but is designed for multiple roles. It can be used in conjunction with the Saucer Separation to perform multi-angle attacks as pioneered by the Prometheus Class. In case of Emergency the Runabouts can be called to further assist and the Odyssey can swap the shuttles for Fighters in times of war, making the Odyssey a small, self-contained armada.
The Odyssey marks a huge step forward in Starship design, and has been compared to the "Great Experiment" the Excelsior class, which still is one of the most effective ships in the history of the Federation. The Odyssey incorporates many features that will probably be seen in future starships.
As flagships of the Federation, the Odyssey combines the exploratory capabilities of a Galaxy Class and the combat capabilities of the Sovereign. Armed with the latest, most advanced phasers, the FNH-40, providing full 360° defensive fire. Simulations have had it successfully take on ships like the latest Romulan D'Deridex, the Jem Hadar Battleship or even a Reman Scimitar. The Odyssey is also well-prepared to engage the Borg threat using rapid polyfrequency phaser adjustment that confuses Borg adaptive technology and prevents them from upgrading their defences. Similarly the ship carries special Baryo-mesonic Quantum warheads that can penetrate Borg shielding and directly damage the superstructure of enemy ships.
Shields are among the strongest currently in service and give up to 30% more protection than either a Galaxy or Sovereign class.
The renewed commitment to peaceful exploration while maintaining the ability to project significant amounts of power has been nicknamed the "Roosevelt doctrine" after the ancient Terran president Theodore Roosevelt who sad "speak softly, and carry a big stick - you will go far." And has been a source of contention in the Federation and Starfleet as well as a diplomatic hurdle to relationships with other powers in the galaxy. But as the Federation emerges from a series of bitter conflicts that have dogged it since the late 24th century, the idea that pacifism without the means to ward off aggressors is now a minority view and many prefer a more pragmatic approach.
Operational :
USS Odyssey (NCC 97000) - USS Ithaca (NCC 98442)
USS Enterprise (NCC 1701-F) - USS Aquarius (NX 98400) destroyed 2410, USS Opportunity (NCC 98942)
USS Houston (NCC-97284) - USS Alamo (NCC 97122)
USS Dennison (NCC-97009) - USS Yermak (NCC 94449)
USS Zheng He (NCC 98111) - USS Taurus (NCC 94221)
Currently under construction :
USS Excelsior (NCC 2000-A) - USS President (NCC 99242)
Notes :
This is as far the expansion of the FASA system goes. The Odyssey, with a little support is a threat even to a Borg cube and has a chance to do some serious damage even without special rules. The odyssey is larger and more powerful by a significant margin than either the Galaxy Class or event the Sovereign, which by then are respectively 50 and 40 years old, roughly the same timespan between the Constitution and the Excelsior, allowing for another scale upgrade.
In game it should be hard to beat, it can probably single-handedly take on all the ships FASA ever published put together. Is it crazy and over the top ? Probably, but as there is a canon Odyssey class Enterprise (authorized by Paramount for Star Trek online) it would be a shame not to include it even if it probably ends up breaking the game.
