And the saucer was supposed to separate and land during the movie: There's more than one site out there with lots o' concept art from the aborted movie. A good one is: link

Not all the FASA ships are pretty. What do you think is the ugliest FASA ship? I can't stand the Ariel Class (even before STD). It may not be the "Ugliest", but it just looks like a mistake. Ariel isn't the prettiest ship developed for Star Trek, but in terms of FASA, I could find a place. FASA laid the ground work for this kind of "shuttle carrier" when they produced their Cochrane class colonial transport. That ship was full of shuttle bays, and i can see it at times being able to be used as a "fighter" carrier if needed to be. Ariel is just pretty much a step further in the development of the concept. A more heavily armed ship designed to put colonist, or marines, down in a more hostile area. There might be circumstances where beaming won't work...you need these ships to move goods and personal by shuttle in those area. They are great for moving drop boats or even small assault craft. These ships look like they have enough room to carry some Scorpio class corvettes on them. Imagine a nice little surprise a raiding force might get if they were doing that! I can see the ship fitting in with FASA's vision of Star Trek in the Kirk era.... I have used her as a good plot device...a device with some decent teeth....I don't have her in Jason's computer version, because i don't have counters for the PC for her, but I would love to have her there as well

The Bader is probably the ugliest. If you had to take a bader or a Brenton around the block which would you pick!

Brenton, of course, because she may be ugly, but handled right; she handles close to the feel of a Reliant class cruiser. YES I STILL CALL THE CLASS RELIANT!!!
Though for science, survey, and research missions, you aren't going to find a ship that is supposedly well equipped with labs and associated sensors. Defensively Bader at least has a bit more bite then the Gagarin (Oberth) class research ships....you know i like FASA's name for that ship better then Oberth...the class would get a small weapons and shielding update later in TNG era and become the Sagan class in the FASAverse....
So I guess it would depend on my mission objectives...

In some ways i like the idea behind such ships as the Ariel. It has potential to add a good element to a scenario or action, but it also offers any problems under the FASA system. For most is this thing is going to be like other large capital ships in the Kirk era...It is going to become a "dock whore", because not many Admirals and the Federation Counsel are going to want to risk such an investment in very hostile area. This beast is going to pack the latest tech, and be so big, that i think only one of her would have been built. She wouldn't be allowed to travel alone. Again stuck at dock until she was needed as part of a fleet of ships for some mission. In terms of sceniro design, She would be a set piece. Used to lay the grounds for actions from other ships. Missions might include placing her on the board as a command ship to protect with the rest of the fleet. Have her operate as a ship using her shuttles to carry out humanitarian missions...you know evac, or supply runs on a planet that "beaming" would be difficult to do, with a gain the rest of the force having to protect or support during the opp. Have her leading a landing force of "marines" in a similar area and so on. unfortunately the nearest thing FASA has to fighters in the game rules are the Federation's Scorpio and the Romulan's P-8. Both these ships aren't much bigger then standard shuttles and carry a crew of four men. (we have had fun for hours fighting these ships), but like all the "midgets" in FASA these ships are fragile, best used in attack groups and so on. I hit from a larger ship and bye bye....but in combat with each other...they can take two or three hits before going bye bye. These is the closest thing to fighter combat in the FASAverse "official" rules...house rules can be built for it, and have been. Now back to Ariel. given her size, i can see her being able to carry one of the Star Fleet's patrol groups of 12 ship strong Pursuit Groups. So this does give her that "aircraft carrier" capability, but then again she becomes even a more high value target that needs a fairly large battle group around her. Her big "hanger bay" at the rear of the ship, also looks like she might be even able to accommodate a couple of Solar or Epsilon class cutters, but i don't think it would be worth the effort to deploy them from her, because i don't thin any more then two could be carried. Though as part of a story line, it gives options for the plot of a scenario. The biggest problem with this is the fact that the ship in the Kirk area is going to be big, expensive and rare. Used only when needed!!! Like Excelsior and Indomitable types, not wanting to be risked on everyday missions.
