Not all the FASA ships are pretty.
What do you think is the ugliest FASA ship? I can't stand the Ariel Class (even before STD). It may not be the "Ugliest", but it just looks like a mistake.

The Ariel wasn't a FASA design. I don't know if it's the ugliest, but I must mention the L-6 "Defender." It looks like a flying insect (fashionable for the Klingons, I guess), but I think it is out of place in the TOS. I just can't imagine that design being in the TOS (probably along with others). Some say FASA's art was more geared toward the TMP era, but the feature films themselves apparently gave no consideration to FASA.

For the Federation ships in FASA, I think the Brenton class cruiser is butt ugly, but she is a good ship in play terms....
for the Rumulans, I would give the nod to the V-6 "Gallant Wing" her proportions just look off to me!
For the Klingons, I wold have to go with the L-13 "Fatman" battleships...even though i love this design and i think it is fun to play just because of everything that is just wrong with it!!
and everything Gorn....they look like bricks floating in space!!!

Someone is FASA liked the wasp style abdomen look since it was used in the L6, D9, and several freighters. It fit with the FASA depiction of the Klingons that they would have multiple distinct design teams.
The ugliest FASA designs were those done for the TNG supplements like Wellington and Moscow. It wasn't even a useful type of ugly where looks were sacrificed for more efficient allocation of space; much of the ugliness created sections too small to be used for anything.

There are no ugly FASA ships, just some that are misunderstood! Seriously though, yes, the TNG designs that FASA came up with just didn't work. Ugly as sin! The thing that got to me especially was that the vertical design of some of them just didn't make sense. No style, and they just looked fragile as well as ugly. Some, like the ones mentioned above, eg the Brenton, were ugly, but good ships stats wise, as cowboy40 says. But I got hold of a few Brenton minis (and some Durrett minis) a while back. Must get round to painting them!

Nearly everything in the TNG supplement was just plain terrible... The only significant exceptions were the official ships.

Honestly I don't have any problems with any FASA designs from the KSRM or the RSRM. Both of these manuals have some ships that are better than others, of course, but even the worst offenders are borning at worst. None of the designs jump out at me as really bad. All of the really ugly ships are Federation ships. From that manual the ugly ships are the Lenthal, Babcock, Bader, and Keith everything else is like the other manuals, some good, some plain and uninteresting but not really offensive. The Next Generation Officers manual is so bad I just don't recognize it's existence.

The Keith is one of the ugly for reasons of practicality designs I like. It just feels like the chunky layered engineering section would be appropriate for a ship intended to carry a lot of easily accessible cargo.

The funny thing for me is that some of my favorite ships (like the Chandley) that I absolutely adore in one view I also consider ugly as sin in another (the side view).

"Unbalanced" is probably a good way to describe some of the FASA designs... Looks good from this direction, looks odd from that direction and ... "OH GOD, MY EYES!" from this other direction...

Of all the designs they produced, I have always been the least impressed by the V-27 "Comet of Destruction". It looks terrible, at least the book version anyway.
The Liberty freighter also looks kind of... awkward.

The Ariel wasn't a FASA design. Yeah, it's not really a FASA design, but it was not an official Trek Design either. It was really just a concept for Star Trek Phase II. They probably could have gotten away with leaving it out.

It was actually -derived- from a concept for ST Phase II. The original was created by Ralph McQuarrie:

Actually i like the Brenton (This sites version of it anyway). Not a big fan of the Genser or the Babcock.
Royal sovereign and Wellington are ugly AF but the best view on these is dorsal view in my minority opinion. Maybe with those if someone started from the top and rebuilt them they could work.
But to me the ugliest are the Romulan V-27 and the Keith...
Which now that I think About it looks a lot like the Genser and Babcock from the top.
Maybe if you flipped the engines to the dorsal side of the Keith it wouldn't be so bad.

I always thought the McQuarrie design was a bit too early 70s looking like a B70 with a saucer in the front.

As many ugly looking FASA designs as there are, the Babcock class takes the cake. When I first saw it my reaction was, "What were they thinking?"

Don't be insulting butts - there are some butts that are attractive... The Wellington, on the other hand...gagh...

I thought it still had the radar dish deflector as part of this concept. The Ugh! version looks to be a blending of the Phase II and TMP Enterprise.

It looks like the Enterprise was rear-ended by an Imperial Star Destroyer.
