Greetings once more, fellow fiends of FASA!
Permit me to show you some renders of the new Klingon design I've built for Studio Bergstrom: The L6 Defender class Frigate.
I built this ship primarily to help 'flesh out' the choices for Klingons in the Four Years War era, but of course, the L6 continues in service for many years after the war. So, what have I changed or extrapolated from the original FASA 3-view?
The first thing you'll probably notice is that this L6 doesn't have the very long tail of the illustration. And of course, the command pod isn't from the D7M!
I have always been of the impression that the L6 in the recognition manual was absurdly long. Scale the 'pod to the same size as that of the D7M, and the L6 is heavy cruiser-sized. That just didn't work for me. So, I trimmed the tail and tweaked the dimensions to make her close to the length of the L9 Sabre in the Woomera Shipyards range.
Below: With L9 Sabre for comparison.
Another significant variation are the two 'shoulders' atop the wing-roots. These came about after much revision, because the top of the hull needed something to give it balance, and I want my Klingon ships to look menacing! They're Klingons, dammit!
I imagine these as photorp add-ons to the D6, but I kept them non-specific for those who prefer the L6 with her original, all-disruptor armament. They could be heavy disruptors, or just bussard collectors. To each their own Trek.
Lastly, I put the impulse engines onto the two trailing 'elbows' of the wings. This is partly a nod to Tobias Richter's excellent D6 from Axanar, with its split engines, and also to give those bits on the wings a reason to exist! But, there's also a recessed panel at the back of the main hull, for those who'd prefer to paint that as a single impulse engine.
The L6 will be released in both 1/3788 and 1/3125 scales.
I hope you like my take on the L6. Please leave some comments if you feel inclined. Let me know your opinions.
