Greetings, eager, young Space Cadets! Those of you on Facebook will have seen the preliminaries of this: The K23 Little Killer Escort flies again! Coming in at 51.6mm long at 1:3788 scale, the new K-23 is a little longer than its FASA predecessor, but that is partly because the engines on this model are a little larger, and set further back. Look at those Impulse engines! This guy is going somewhere like he means it! I wanted the K23 to look like the designer wanted a raider that could get into - and out of - trouble at lightning speed. Lots of references back to the original K23 on this new version, such as the offset bridge dome. Lots of details and greeblies to keep painters happy. But, a quick black wash and drybrush will bring out those details with no problems. A quick thank you to those who provided feedback on my 'first pass' on the K-23; I reduced the engines by 15%, and revised the shape of the command pod, based on your thoughts. Very helpful! The new K-23 will be available from Studio Berstrom, in both 1:3788 and 1:3125 scales, very soon. Stay tuned for updates! - Martin

Never much cared for the K-23. I have a new appreciation for it. Now the name fits.

Thank you, folks! Glad you like the gribblies. I did think the old K-23 was lacking in functional parts, so I added some, to give it some exposed details for dedicated painters. 'Drew Bergstrom has the files for both sizes, so I hope we'll see these on the webstore pretty soon.

I'd seen the first renders over on the Facebook pages, but couldn't comment not being on Facebook. Glad to see the engines are a little smaller. The added detail helps, even if it wasn't on the FASA original. Actually, the original mini had very fragile nacelles and struts, so this is hopefully an improvement in that regard. Nice work again!

As escorts go, this is one of my favorite, I use them in conjunction with convoys and they actually perform the mission well. I am glad to have a mini of it for game play coming along

I know some some people here are saying they don't like this class of ship, but playing Four Year War campaigns i have learned the importance of this type of ship in general. The K-23 was introduced to the Klingon fleet in 2254, and at this time, the Klingons were experiencing a change in the conduct of the war. By this time they had made their deepest pushes into Federation space, and their lines of communication were stretched to the limits of what they could maintain.
Star Fleet had gone onto the offensive and were having successes, not only in fleet battles, but in ground actions as well. Sensing the Klingons problems of being over extended the UFP forced a convoy war onto the Klingons. The IKN was already having trouble maintaining the front line vessels in enough strength to engage the Star Fleet on the offensive front. They were having to bleed off forces to protect the lines of communication. So, like the Federation had to do, in the early part of the war, the Klingons were forced to come up with a cheap solution to provide escort in suffecent numbers to comvoys that wouldn't pull other ships off the lines. The solution was the K-23, that like the UFP's Portsmith class, of 2252, was designed pretty much as a heavily armed escort vessel that was able to be considered expendable. These "Little Killers" weren't able to change the momentom of the war back toward the Klingon advantage, but they did slow down the Federation's assaults on the convoys.
They also proved useful as a heavy scout at times, and they were even found filling in for destroyer shortages in battle fleets, but they were totally inadequate for that role and suffered heavy losses in those situations.
Just remember what these little ships were meant for, that was commerce protection and to relieve pressure off the larger fleet units and to keep those larger ships free for service on the front line. When you look at it, both the Federation and the Klingons learned a valued lesson they didn't forget after the war. The escort type ship became a standard vessel in both navies.

As always, Cowboy40 is a DEEP well of information. I sometimes wonder if he was there! Tip of the hat to ya C40 Thanks tosfan1956, but i am actually still learning things about the FASAverse of Star Trek, even though i have been playing in it since the early 80's. This has to be my favorite version of Star Trek Universes It is a shame that FASA lost the license for it, over what now seems to be a ridicules reason, Gene would be turning over in his grave with what CBS has done to his beloved utopia, If I don't have knowledge of something in the FASAverse, I will pull out my collection of books, and yes i have them all, and research it, think about it, and appreciate the contanuity that FASAverse has!!!!
