Hi. I haven't logged on as Admin in awhile. Proboards is alerting me the forum is just about out of local storage. I am probably going to have to switch that off, which means people will need to use tags to drop in images stores at other locations, vs. directly attached to their posts.
Meanwhile, on a more important note: how many people are even using this old forum anymore? I don't want to deactivate it if people still find it worthwhile. But many (most?) seem to have swapped over to using the Facebook group.
Please let me know your thoughts.

I for one still use the forum. I know there are lots of people who use Facebook who aren't here, but there are some regulars here who don't use Facebook, as I think was stated in the post where you announced the Facebook group. When you say use tags for pictures, does that mean have my posts show a link to the image, rather than the image being seen directly in the post? Hope you are keeping well. Stay safe.

I think it's reasonable to expect people to host images elsewhere if storage space is running out and is definitely preferable to having the whole forum shut down. Obviously I'm not the one running this site so I don't know how much effort it requires but, while I don't post daily, I do visit pretty much every day FWIW. Is there a way to manually prune old threads from 5+ years that don't get any additional views to delete the pictures attached to them? I don't know how work intensive that is though or if it can be automated or how much that would delay the inevitable refilling of the space saved but I figured I'd ask just in case.

I know Mateo Ascension posts every day on his creation of new ships in his Trek Cosmos. And I post when I can on anything Kephan. So yes, folks still use this Forum.

I like both but I feel there is a sense of detail on this forum that doesn't translate to facebook. I would really be sad if if this disappeared.

I pop in a few times a week. I've pretty much learned all I wanted to about the game, but I dig the people here and it's fun to talk about Trek in general without a thousand nut-bars jumping on every comment.

Don't use FaceF**k at all.

Im not a fan of the Facebook page- no offense intended. I have periods of absence from the forum, but I do come back when I can. But, Brad, you do what have to do, man.

I have to agree with my colleagues. While I don't sign on every day, I do take a quick look to see if something new has popped up. Granted, since Meteo's return I have had to shut off notifications for my email. I still post when the mood strikes and I think it is a good location to share ideas and topics in an orderly manner. We have developed a good community here that sometimes Facebook lacks.
Ironically, I use my Facebook Star Trek page as a host to post pictures here.
Speaking of Meteo, you may want to contact him about the space issue. From what I have noticed (I quit reading them quite a while ago) he uses the direct storage of images and files that may be the cause of the local space issue, especially with 240+ posts, most with that picture file from Jason Robinson's Computer version of the game.

Agreed, I like the forum presentation better than Facebook layouts. I know if you're looking for something here, you have to scan the pages of a thread, but I prefer that to looking at a post of Facebook, then you've got to open the comments, and remember to open the replies to individual comments. That always annoys me about Facebook, and Twitter for that matter, when I'm looking at someone's feed on that!

Go ahead and require us to link from other sites for pics. I do that anyway for one of my websites. And I only use Facebook extremely rarely, if at all, so that I do not Contaminated with Internet Cliches, and start accusing people of being Trolls in broken ENglish.

When I post a photo, I link it out of my Cloud account. I use to host here, but that fills up fast, I learned years ago to post off the cloud for here...so yes require everyone to have pics hosted off site. That is best for us all anyway because we control our own content.

The forums are far superior to facebook in my opinion. I keep an eye on both but the forums are what I care about. Facebook is terrible for persistent content. I like that I can go back and reference old posts, images, etc here on the fourms. On facebook it's like pulling teeth to find something that's an hour old. I'd be terribly disappointed if you shut the forums down. As for the storage, I created an admin post in 2017 asking people to host their own images because of limited space. I'm surprised to find that people aren't respecting that request.

Yep, include me as well. No worries about hosting pics from other servers. We can manage.
Good to hear from you, Brad!

Ditto. I just posted a reply with 10 pics, all liked to their home web page.
I kinda thought you were a myth, Brad... Nice to see that you are real.

Well, Iβm a little late chiming in on this but... please donβt close this if you can help it. I tried the FB site and as someone else said, too many nutcrackers commenting just because they donβt get it! This is more of a private discussion... gentlemenβs club if you will. I havenβt been on much bc taking care of my wife has ramped up. But, I check in when I can and almost always find some useful information. Thank you Brad for creating this and thank you for your service to us and our country!! May God keep you safe.

I post here and check the starship design hubs. Atolm's drawings are a huge draw as they appear to pop up here before everyone starts copycatting him everywhere else.
Also there's good people over here and we talk about more than Star Trek. Sometimes we are even magnanimous about it.
Thank you Mr. Torgenson for keeping the forum and the site going!
If I could ask one favor from you guys, if you can update your original PDF's of the various ships. Some of the links are dead. That's an awesome ship recognition manual and to have it all for free is very generous. All the information is there but having the pdf's would be great.

Greetings. You'll have to forgive my ignorance but as far as the memory issue. When someone posts an image and multiple people quote that whole post, including the image, does each quote use the same space as the original?

Perhaps a technically minded person could pop in and answer that one?

Yes, the file uploads to the forum storage and quotes just repeat the link to that file. That said, people are not supposed to be uploading images to the forum. Please use existing image hosting sites and link to off-forum assets. I personally have been using imgur.com.
