THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS III PATROL CUTTERartist unknownKnown Sphere Of Operation: Assembly wideData Reliability: B Close up scans over repeated contactsThe Tholian Patrol Cutters are the oldest and the most numerous vessel type in the Tholian navy. These small ships are literally the backbone of Tholian naval might. They are so numerous that their exact number cannot be accurately estimated. It is unknown when the V-1 type entered service but it is apparent that the design was a breakthrough in Tholian engineering, so much so that nearly every vessel since has incorporated identical construction characteristics. A single pilot can man each ship however each additional crewmember increases the ships efficiency. The ships can carry a maximum of six crewmen, each working an identical interface that allows them to take control of the ship as needed. The incapacitation of one or more crewmembers will not affect the operation of the ship until all crewmembers are lost. The vessels characteristics are quite impressive for such a light design. The engines provide an excellent power to movement ratio and an excellent high warp capability that exceeds even the best current Federation designs of similar mass. The defensive and offensive capabilities are adequate, but a bit on the light side. It is obvious that the ship was not intended to work alone, however most patrol the Tholian borders that way. Due to the number of ships, however, a comrade is never too far away. Commonly referred to as a “Web Spinner” class, the patrol cutter gained that nickname because of the web-spinning device that all Tholian ships have. Carried in the aft position, this unique device aids these small ships in securing asteroids and other spatial debris and anomaly for use by the Tholians. It can also be useful as a tractor device for towing items, such as other ships, that are much larger than the cutter itself. The science is unknown, however the web device negates the mass of the object caught in the web, effectively entrapping it in a pocket of “null-space”. The V-2 type was put into service shortly before the encounter with the U.S.S. Enterprise under Captain Kirk’s command in 2269. To improve the offensive capabilities of the small vessels, the addition of the new plasma disruptor gave the ships a much-needed boost in firepower. The weapon utilizes disruptor technology to carry a small charge of super-heated plasma from the warp drive towards a target. This gives the plasma greater range by keeping it from expanding and cooling as much. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS V LIGHT CRUISERartist unknown Known Sphere of Operation Assembly wideData Reliability: B Close up scans over repeated encountersIt is estimated that the V-1 of the Tholian Light Cruiser was developed a short time before the initial launch of the V-2 Patrol Cutter. Originally intended to be an up-gunned cutter, the Light Cruiser has developed it’s own special niche within the Tholian navy. This rugged design is used for everything from scouting to escort work. It has the capabilities of an excellent forward observer while carrying sufficient firepower to act as a destroyer. It is a quick, nimble vessel with the typical high warp signature present in all Tholian craft. For it’s abilities, the Light Cruiser is incredibly small, making it a difficult target to hit. If its size wasn’t enough, this design has a shielding system that provides excellent protection for an efficiency ratio that is even better than most Federation cruisers. Factor in an unusually high structural integrity for its size and one can start to understand why these ships are so tenacious in combat. The firepower these ships bring to the table is also quite respectable. Armed with four long-range, medium power beam weapons and two mid-range plasma disruptors, the Light Cruisers can hold their own against much larger opponents. When working in concert with either a small squadron of Patrol Cutters or in tandem with another Light Cruiser, even the major capital ships of the known races face a tough challenge. It is odd that this twin-hulled design carries only one web-casting device. It was originally believed that each half carried one of these enigmatic units, however long-range observations and scans have proven otherwise. These vessels have been seen operating in the Hades Cluster, apparently towing larger asteroids into Assembly space using only one web-caster. There is no real way to be certain. A hands-on inspection of these ships is impractical, if not impossible. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS VII HEAVY CRUISERartist unknown Known Sphere of Operation Assembly wideData Reliability: A first hand combat, repeated scansThe Class VII Heavy Cruiser is the Tholians equivalent to the Constitution class; a utilitarian vessel designed to perform everything from advanced scientific research to frontline combat. The Heavy Cruisers also act as flagships for most major Tholian fleet operations. As is typical of Tholian designs, the Heavy Cruiser has above par sublight and warp manoeuvrability. Its cruising speed of warp eight equals the top speed of many races best designs, and it is actually capable of holding its top speed of warp ten for exceptionally long periods, leading many to believe that it is capable of much higher velocities. The engine combination also provides excellent power for both offensive and defensive systems. The type V-1 Heavy Cruiser was designed and constructed after the Patrol Cutter and Light Cruiser were put into production but predates the Battle Cruiser, though that time is still unknown. It carries a bristling array of medium strength, long-range beam weapons and three potent plasma-disruptors, two of which are capable of firing in multiple arcs. In 2/3001, the Tholians launched the V-2, which upgraded the beam weapon systems to a heavy hitting, extreme range version rivalling the best the Federation had at the time, the FH-11. Defensively, the Heavy Cruiser is also well equipped. The shielding system is quite powerful, not nearly as strong as the shields used on the Excelsior class, but close, and they are more powerful than anything the Romulans or the Gorn have at this time. Shields are not the only defensive strength this design has, however. Both the V-1 and V-2 variants have phenomenal structural integrity for a vessel of this size. The unidentified material the Tholians use in construction appears to be very dense and seems to have both reactive and ablative properties. While not impregnable, the Heavy Cruiser can take quite a beating. heh. I just received the heavy cruiser (your second post above) and the Dreadnought in the mail yesterday. Gonna be painting them shortly. I was hoping to use the detached part of the dreadnought as a destroyer or light cruiser, but the hole in the dreadnought engine expansion section is too large to just insert and remove the other craft easily. I was thinking a strong putty might be able to hold it. Seems to me the dreadnought would look alot more deadly putting the heavy cruiser onto it! Time to start trimming the flash and prepping the paints...

THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS V WAR CRUISERartist unknown Known Sphere of Operation Assembly wideData Reliability: D Projected from less than five scans In 2/3005 the Tholians decided to take a second look at one of their long-standing designs, the twin-hulled Light Cruiser, to see if its sublight handling characteristics could be improved upon. They also wanted to upgrade the weapons systems to give the design a decidedly bigger bang, especially since they had not only discovered the existence of the Federation, but the Gorn, the Romulans and the Abythis Protectorate as well. The Tholians spent nearly a year trying different warp and impulse engine combinations, but none would give any great improvement. After tying up numerous front-line vessels, the Tholians decided to build, from scratch, a test vessel just to perfect the balance they were looking for. The results were astounding, so much so that the Tholians added another design to their database. Sharing similar lines with both the Patrol Cutter and Light Cruiser, the Battle Cruiser is a blend of both designs. It is reminiscent of a Patrol Cutter with an elongated engineering section. This re-arrangement of the warp and impulse systems has improved the handling of the vessel while keeping the forward aspect of the ship small. While the design carries only one plasma disruptor compared to the Light Cruiser’s two, the disruptor is larger, doing more damage over a greater range. The four beam weapons are also much more powerful, having greater range and improved accuracy. The only shortcoming of the design is the shield system. While it actually provides superior protection, it is not as efficient as the shield system found on the Light Cruiser. The reason is not known, but it is assumed that the shield system was downsized in order to keep the manoeuvrability and firepower optimized. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS IX PHASE II BATTLECRUISERartist unknownKnown Sphere Of Operation: Federation BorderData Reliability: B Repeated scans The second largest vessel the Tholians field, the Heavy Battle Cruiser ushered in a new era for the Tholians on several fronts. The first and foremost was design. This new vessel is a radical departure from standard Tholian doctrine. While part of it maintains the tri-axis hull concept, the engineering section and warp engine placement is located in a large, boxy construct behind the more traditional hull segment. Indeed, the ship looks as if it has been influenced by Klingon design. This departure was necessitated by the other revolution experienced by the Tholians, Trans-warp drive. The Federation tried for years to make the Excelsior into a viable test-bed for Trans-warp drive, a new and radical technology that would cut down travel time and increase velocity. While it was deemed a dismal failure because it failed to deliver the promised effects, it was able to increase the velocity of the Excelsior to far beyond any current engine design. The Tholians underwent the same learning curve with the Heavy Battle Cruiser. Both vessels drive system was born from the encounter with the U.S.S. Enterprise and Commander Loskene’s Patrol Cutter. The site of the meeting was at a tear in the fabric of space/time, referred to at that time as an “interphase”. This interphase would become the basic theory behind the trans-warp drive. A small, self-sealing tear would be created by the vessel, which would enter it and arrive on the other side of the tear in a different part of space. Both projects failed, however the technology was to blame, not the theory. The vessel itself is quite stout, carrying a tremendous arsenal. Eight beam weapons, six of which are banked, cover all arcs of the ship while the lone plasma-disruptor sits in its usual forward position. The Heavy Battle Cruiser, however, has added a new weapon system to the already lethal payload, the photon torpedo. Four medium-range, medium damage torpedo systems cover the forward and abeam arcs. Defensively the Heavy Battle Cruiser is on par with its lighter predecessors. It carries an excellent, efficient shielding system that parallels the Federations FSP system. The ship is also quite sturdy structurally, however it is still eclipsed by the Class VII Heavy Cruiser. This may lay with the inclusion of the secondary engineering hull, which offers a fairly broad surface for direct impacts from weapons fire. This vessel has been showing up more and more on the Federation border, shadowing the patrol runs of our most sophisticated vessel in the area, the Chessell class XII cruiser. This has provided an excellent opportunity to get a detailed sensor analysis of this design. Of course, we also believe that the Tholians are doing the exact same thing to us. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS XI PHASE II BATTLESHIPartist unknownKnown Sphere of Influence: Assembly InteriorData Reliablility: E Projected stats based on heresay/transmissions The newest vessel in the Tholian navy is perhaps the most dangerous design known in the Alpha Quadrant. The Tholian Battleship surpasses even the vaunted Excelsior Mk-I on many fronts and parallels the Mk-II, though overall it is a vastly superior vessel. Utilizing similar engine technology to the Excelsior, the Tholian Battleship is capable of the same accelerated warp speeds and it mirrors the sublight handling of the Federation design. The warp engines produce slightly more power than the Federation model, however the overall power output of the ship is less since the impulse drive is considerably smaller than the ones used on Excelsior. Offensively the Tholian ship carries less firepower, but not by much. The beam weapons match the Excelsior’s long-range guns in range and damage, but there is an additional bank added and they are set in a different pattern. The Tholian ship also carries the largest plasma disrupter available which is capable of putting out 50 percent more damage than the Excelsiors torpedo system, however it carries only one of these. The big weapon is backed up by four newly developed photon torpedoes, which have less range and carry a smaller warhead than the Federation FP-4. The battleship also carries two highly advanced web caster units, however it has both of them mounted in the forward position as opposed to firing backwards. While the reason for this is unknown, it is assumed that the Tholians have figured out a way to use their web technology in and offensive roll. The defensive capabilities are where this ship shines, however. It is about half the size of the Excelsior and weighs considerably less, making it a much harder target to hit, especially at range. The shield system is almost as powerful as the Excelsiors and is just as efficient. The compact size and mysterious hull material, however, make up the difference. The structural integrity of the Tholian ship is far greater than that of the Excelsior, allowing it to take much more punishment once the shields have failed. Furthermore, the operational redundancy built into all Tholian vessels allows it to continue operating at peak efficiency even after taking large amounts of damage. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS XV TITANImage by theSwede Known Sphere of Operation: unknownData Reliability: F second hand information from source outside Assembly Shortly after their first confrontation with the Abythis Protectorate, the Tholians began to slowly expand into Protectorate space. With its planetary holdings already reduced to a bare minimum and taxed to the limit, the Abythis were not willing to let this new threat make any headway into their territory. They launched a massive counter attack, utilizing three of their six Monolith class battleships to anchor the assault. The Tholians met the fleet head on in order to stop what they perceived was an invasion. The battle raged on for nearly eight hours, costing both sides heavily in personnel and materials. The outcome was a draw, but the three Monoliths returned to Abythis space. Concerned that they could not destroy a single battleship, the Tholians set about creating a leviathan of their own. The premise was to build a ship that was capable of taking out a Monolith single-handed. Their success has yet to be measured, however their effort has produced something that has even caught the eye of the Denopsians, the self proclaimed guardians of the galaxy. The Titan is a monstrous vessel and not just by Tholian standards. Measuring 420 meters long and 120 meters in width and height, it returns to the standard Tholian triangular design. Each point carries a massive transwarp engine, providing tremendous power and unmatched warp capability. These are supplemented by three equally massive impulse drives. This combination, however, cannot effectively compensate for the tremendous mass of the vessel, so it isn’t as elegant or graceful in sublight like other Tholian ships. The Titan is a lumbering monster that rams its way through space. The firepower this ship brings to the table is what has drawn so much attention. Nine phaser banks, six photon torpedoes, three heavy plasma disruptors, and three of the most advanced web casters the Tholians have available make this design a true predator. The heavy plasma disruptors alone are capable of dispatching smaller vessels, like destroyers or escorts, in one shot. The phaser banks can provide a withering barrage at long range, and the newly developed heavy photon torpedo mirrors that of the Federations FP-4 in accuracy and destructive capability. The Titan is the first known ship to carry a quintuple phase shielding system. Providing tremendous protection for such minimal power must have been essential considering how much power is needed to propel the ship in combat. The Tholians also appear to be using either a new hull material or a new technique for improving structural integrity. The hull is unbelievably strong and it is estimated that it could withstand a full barrage of fire from an Excelsior class vessel and continue fighting. This vessel has drawn the attention of the Denopsians. Not because of its size, but because it is so out of character with known Tholian practices. The fact that they have built a ship that is so large is not beyond their capability, but is beyond logic. The Tholians are naturally xenophobic, however this reaction to the Abythis aggression was unpredicted. For sure, all powers in the Alpha Quadrant will be keeping a close eye on any further developments of this kind by the Tholians. The MiniThe miniature is actually the heavy particle accellerator cannon from a 28mm vehicle for another game I play. I was kitbashing the parent model into something else and had this left over as an extra. It rattled around my parts box for several years before I recognized the similarity to Tholian ship design. theSwede

Great idea. Often the parts to other toys mechs work out better as ships on their own. I love the car air fresheners--they look like lower refit era sensor domes.

I drilled a hole in the front module of the Dreadnought to use as a destroyer. Then soldered on a paperclip piece to hold it on and up when I join it to the Dreadnought section. 2 ships out of one! Also, the other twinned hull I use as a heavy cruiser.

I know how difficult it can be to design ships within a very limited "theme" like this one - kudos, Swede!
I have mixed feelings about the latter designs. I understand the need to move beyond the original concepts into something grander, but I'm just not sure if this is a good way of doing it. But my hat is off to you in your valiant effort!

THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 CLASS V FREIGHTERImage by theSwede Known Sphere Of Operation: Assembly wideData Reliability: A Close up scans over repeated contactsProbably the most common Tholian vessel, the freighter is rather unremarkable. A basic geometric design, the freighter has a very simple bridge/control module that is capable of detaching and reconnecting to another hull in seconds. This allows the crew to change cargo pods quickly and depart in short order while the one they just brought in can be unloaded at will. The control module has only a maneouvering impulse engine that cannot be used while attached to the cargo unit. The six-sided cargo pod houses the warp and impulse decks. The ship is quite nimble when unloaded, but it’s performance drops dramatically when full. The cargo pod is utilitarian in design, capable of hauling anything from dry bulk material to fluidic cargos. No real modifications are necessary, even when changing from one product to another. The use of the web technology allows them to contain any kind of material and keep it separate from another, so it would technically be possible to carry both liquid and dry material in the same load. The ships themselves are lightly armed, carrying only two beam weapons, however the ships are heavily shielded. The shield system on the freighter is actually more powerful than those found on other races destroyers and frigates. The system is not very efficient, however, and at full power will greatly reduce a loaded ships manoeuvrability. THOLIAN SECTOR INTELLIGENCE FILE OFFICIAL FINDINGS REPORT: OPERATION PICKAXE SECLAR 4 THOLIAN WEB TENDER(no image available) Known Sphere Of Operation: unknownData Reliability: E Unit scanned once in operationThe Tholian Web Tender is a unique machine. For all the complexities involved with the mysterious web, the tender is nothing more than a pair of web casters mounted to a giant power generator/amplifier. The tender has no warp capability even though it has two nacelle-like devices on the aft section. These actually are the impulse engines, mounted to the side to make room for one of the web casters. The tender has two web casters; one mounted aft, one mounted forward. This allows the web tender to service two webs at once or one exceptionally large web by acting as a conduit in which the web passes from one emitter to another via the huge anti-matter power generator. The web tender is unarmed and is therefore unable to engage in combat. The device has limited military and combat based applications, however, and has been used on occasion where a Tholian fleet needed the added protection of a full powered web. The tender attaches to a parent vessel in the same way the combat web caster does, except it cannot spin a web while moving. It cannot be connected to the combat web spinner. The additional mass would damage the Combat casters connection point. Hi Swede (oddly enough, I'm visiting Stockholm as I write this), Looks like you've put a lot of hard work into your Tholian project. I'd love to see some of the images - which seem to have lost their links over time. I have a question: it looks like most of your designs have 2 warp engines. Given the trilateral symmetry common to most Tholian ships from canon, wouldn't either 1 or 3 engines be more appropriate? I'm thinking of examples such as this one: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tholian_ship_(22nd_century)I have a Starship Construction Manual on the way, so I'm not yet "qualified" to propose alternatives...

I have a Starship Construction Manual on the way, so I'm not yet "qualified" to propose alternatives... Most of these designs were created and tested with my group long before the Internet became such a mainstay of our everyday lives. In order to maintain the balance of the game and not have to do too much in the way of modifying the rules and charts of the combat system I opted to retain the standard engine configuration of warp and impulse drives found in so many of the ships made originally for the game. That was back in 1984! Since then, some of the newer ships I developed in the march forward adopted different techniques and ideas sprung over the 40 years I have been actively playing the game (got one of the box sets in 1983 after playing Starfleet Battles. SFB took too long and was rules heavy, thus FASA to the rescue). Since the Tholians have always been a personal favorite, I was disappointed with FASA's only offering being a simple sheet for the Tholian ship seen in The Tholian Web (First edition, I believe). I used that to expand and grow the Tholian's since that time, filling in an entire backstory as to their existence in order to make the RPG element of our play group work. Since then, four decades of game evolution maturity has allowed me to refine and better detail the races I have created for FASA's Trek. Ihave thought of revisiting the Tholian ships I created then and adopt further refinement, perhaps incorporating a three warp engine doctrine instead of two. Time will tell. Wanted to address this one separately. I've never adopted the fan based communities ideas in any of my games. It's not that I what I've done is better (I do, but that's a different arguement, haha) it's just that I have worked so long as a solo act building and developing my own universe that using someone elses ideas seems.....well.....alien. My group, and some of the groups that spawned from mine, still use most of what I did back in the 80s. Also, I'm actually Canadian, but my mother's parents were from Sweden, thus the moniker. I'm looking forward to visiting cousins and family I have living in Sweden soon.
