The above entries were the main line ups of the carrier air groups at the beginning to mid 1942 for both the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Grumman XF5F-1...the "Skyocket" ========== It is a shame that this machine did not make it past the prototype stage into production. This beast is fast, agile, and heavily armed for a fighter in 1941. Evan at cruise settings this thing moved at 300 mph, and could pull a top speed of around 390 mph. Though it had those good things going for it, well it just couldn't be made to wok on the carriers of the time. It was just a little to big, and it had a nasty tendency to get "prop strikes" on the deck when they came in. The Navy did try to solve these issues, but they continued throughout the carrier trials and test program of the prototypes. To bad!!! That said I love flying the sim of it...
