Ah... the Scorpion. Not my favorite Northrop product. F-86's are always cool though. Even the long nose "Saber Dogs".
Too bad we can't bring back the Sabers with F124-GA-100 engines. 5% more thrust, 23% less fuel consumption, and half the weight (increase in stores or fuel capacity by 1,504 lb). Add in some modern avionics and you have a nice, simple, cheap Close air support plane.

Aw but, the F-89J like the one above was a fairly good interceptor even in the 1960's, In this form, the Scorpion was modified to work with the SAGE (Semi-Automated Ground Environment) intercept control system. This method used a data-link to the plane from the ground computers that calculated the best approach intercept on the target, sent the data and that was then sent to the instruments and the pilot "matched the needles" to the target, and made the attack. All this was done by computer. That said, either the pilot of the bird or a an intercept officer on the ground could over ride the system and make a "Ground Controlled Intercept" manually. Also, the F-89J carried AIM-4A Falcon SARH (semi-active radar homing) missile, the AIM-4B IR (infared seeker) fire and forget missile, the AIR-2 Genie nuclear tipped rocket, and Mighty Mouse folding fin Rockets. These modifications kept it a viable interceptor until the last unit of the Iowa Air National Guard was re-equipped with F-102 Delta Dagger interceptors, in 1969....

Capability-wise, the F-89 is pretty cool, especially for the time. Almost ugly enough to be French , but still quite capable. Although Dark Skies did a nice video on the inability of a pair of them to shoot down an F4F Wildcat drone (and start fires in California). I'm thinking it was an early model. But when you look at the YB-49, P-61, and the F-5/T-38 (and F-20), the F-89 is a bit of an ugly duckling... Of course Lockheed has also had a few dogs... (F-35 is uglier that Nixon's butt and the F-94 was not much better). The F-84's were pretty sweet though. Good ground pounder jet.

I find the "Beast" to be one of the most beautiful ships in all of spaceborne franchises. the Battlestar Pegasus is a brilliant interpretation of the battlestar concept. Big, heavily armed cross between missile boat, aircraft carrier and battleship. BSG2004 did a wonderful job with just about every ship in the show. The Mercury class being the pinacle of Colonial design.
