So a weird thought occured to me I wanted to pose to you aircraft folks on the forums here. If you could take any era of flight and hodgepodge it together that it works and flies for fun what would you do? I'm curious to see what some of you come up with!

An F-104 with really long wings... wait, that's a U-2.
An F-16XL with the P&W F-119 from an F-22 and F-35 Avionics
A P-38 Lightning with P&W PT-6 turboprops. Replace the 004 ea 0.50 cals and 001 ea 20mm with a single GAU-19 .50 cal Gatling, and the APG-30 radar gunsight (F-86 and P-80).

The only issue there is - the P-38 already had compressibility issues during dives - those engines might well keep it in that mode permanently.
(Would probably still be cool, for a while.)

Dive breaks mostly took care of compressibility. I guess I could have gone with P-40 with a PT-6. Piper actually did the P-51 with a T-53. |
