Life for the Romulan outcast named Salen Heishen began at her birth in late 2195. Her parents for reasons unknown to her gave her up for adoption to another close family who took the recently born baby in and gave her official name. This adoptive family life was not an easy one for the girl. But in time she grew in her formative years as most Romulan children do to embrace her life. Her adoptive parents were very well off and well known and influential business owners of several contract and building firms within the Star Empire who worked closely with the Naval arm of the Colonization Division. By the age of 20 Salen had followed in her adoptive parent's footsteps embracing the business life of her education. Her 'Great Duty' years were like any Romulan sent into each naval division to find their best strengths on the job. The first year was in the military division where her performance was considered horrible by her trainers. Next year's assignment was in the colonization division where she showed great promise. The third year was off to the outpost division stationed along the Romulan/Gorn border, again here her performance was barely above those in the military division. Her fourth year found her in the Exploration Division aboard a research vessel where she did somewhat well but it was felt not a true promise to invest resources in further training. So this placed her in her final year back in the Colonization division where she perfected her training there and excelled beyond anyone's expectations. From here Salen spent the next 44 years of her life deeply engrossed in the Star Empire's various colony development projects. While officially she was an officer in the Star Empire over this time, because of her adoptive parents pull in the Navy she was unofficially also an employee in their business ventures. So it was that as her rank grew so too did her growth in the family business. Sadly on the eve of her 70th birthday she acted against her family's advice in investing much of the company's resources which she was now in control of personally into another colonial project for the Star Empire. Her adoptive parents now retired, had cautioned her that to invest in the project known as 'Project: Grey Star', a planetary system on the edge of known space opposite the galactic borders near Gorn space was too risky to properly setup in. However, lulled by the possibly that if successful of major credit returns and influence by several high ranking Navy officers, Salen took the project and gambled. Sadly when an undetected plasma storm came through the system two months into the project's setup, destroying 90% of the colony's planet and orbital infrastructure and then made worse by a raid by Gorn cruisers in the region that destroyed what remained and stole away what little was still intact of worth. Salen was ruined, and her parent's company forced to be bought out by rival businesses. Ruining her once great business empire her parents in an effort to save their own finances and influence cut all ties. The Star Empire looking for a scapegoat to blame for the debacle laid it fully on Salen's head. Stripped of her business, her rank, and command she was deemed an outcast in all public and private sectors. Using the last of her meager credits the 70 year old woman took flight from the Empire of her birth to join a convoy bound for the Kephan Unity.
There by her arrival with others in 2265 she was able to use her natural talents of business and charm to weasel her way into several mercantile corporations. From there she used her well honed skills to quickly over the remainder of 2265 to go from a low ranking employee to a major stake and controller within the KUSN Mercantile business firm known now as the Heishen Corporation. Formerly this corporate entity was originally composed of three other smaller businesses that dealt in mining, colony research and development, and internal shipping management. Under Salen's guidance however, all three businesses joined together under her gaze and by 2266 had become a forefront dealer in many other plans within the Unity for mining/colony efforts in areas deemed too risky for mining or colonization by others. The motto of 'high risk, high reward' became the corporates battlecry. Though still lacking the range of influence, credits, and rank she had formerly in the Star Empire by 2266's end Salen was happy with her new lot in life and fully devoted to further expansion within the Unity.
