So here is my buddy Brandon's first real attempt at using the construction rules to make a Frankenstein ship for the Unity. The idea is that the KUSN takes the 3 I-4 freighters they got from the Romulans, copies their hull and makes these three shuttle tender/carrier platforms for the fleet's use. Their purpose is to transport, repair, resupply, and in a combat sense launch combat armed shuttles or recover them. Because of the main power supply being the RWD-1 engines any further productions will likely have to use either Starfleet, Klingon or Orion designed power plants. The rest is sourced or built off copies of other obtained systems from the Federation and Klingon ships.
In early 2267 the KUSN received a variety of older Romulan ships and personnel outcasts after their diplomatic windfall in returning the the quite modern RCC cloaking device which had been scavenged from the remains of the Orion built raider ship called the Charger's Price, which in turn had fallen into Starfleet's hands. Admiral R'Archer in his daring raid captured the hulk intact with its Pearl Repair facility and left the Federation quite bloodied and embarrassed politically at the Unity's victory. R'Archer recognized upon his heroic return the windfall the return gesture of the cloak and plans of the Charger Price could be for the Unity to get their hands on older Romulan ships. After the choice was made by the Unity's congress the KUSN soon received many such ships. As 2267 passed an up and coming designer from a small ship building firm happened to catch his own windfall by obtaining clearance from the KUSN to build a shuttle tender/carrier platform using modified hulls of the Romulan's I-4 freighter.
The up and comer was named Richard Quinn, a human born among the Triangle and looking to make his own mark in life at the young age of 25. He and his small team of engineers soon set to work on their hopeful vision to fulfill the KUSN's request. The I-4's hull was quickly gutted of almost 3/4th of the normal cargo bays, and their walls knocked down to connect directly to the rear facing shuttle bay which itself was enlarged. Some additional support crew quarters were also added at this time. Requirements of the contract by the KUSN required that the ship carry some manner of armement both beam and missile types. To save on time the designers kept the R-4M and RWD-1 power systems but cut out the romulan made impulse system and replaced it with the similar but more powerful FIC-3. The shielding system was equally gutted from the original Romulan design and replaced with the bulkier but more efficient Klingon KSK system. For offensive power the ship was armed with the light but easy to produce FH-2 phaser banks arranged in pairs to cover all arcs of fire. The moderately weighted K-2 torpedo system was also added with one to forward and one to aft. However, because of their earlier gutting of cargo bays storage and armament systems for this launching platform was very tight, each one only able to fire 5 times before needing resupply. But this was felt to be agreeable within the constraints of the mission profiles the tender/carrier would perform. With the capability to embark up to 12 Type-1 armed shuttles if needed the class was deemed more the sufficient for its design.
Within 8 months by late August of 2267 Quinn and his team had turned around and produced the three requested ships. After another 2 months of trial testing they were commissioned with one being assigned near the Federation border, the second to the Klingon border, and the third was kept near the interior regions of Unity space in reserves. Because of the difficulty in reproducing Romulan designs plans are in the works to allow further production if desired using more known computer and warp drive systems, likely of Orion make. This proposed Mark II of the KI-4 class is still on the drawing boards but could be rushed into production should the requests come through.
