So last weekend in addition to running the Corillian battle we also did another RPG mainly focused simulation with this time my buddy Sam taking the lead with the group (his PC/NPC highlight will be coming soon promise!) but in short he wanted to take the much derided Swordfish destroyer found here, and create a trio of research cruisers as a major 'refit'. So I said to give it a go and I would pass on his story and idea to you brickwall for your formal blessing and approval. If you give it we'll use it if not then no biggie! The one main issue my buddy Sam and the group did find using your original destroyer specs was the FWC-2s put the ship over the class VIII limits of weight, not to mention you did not list the type of computer core used. So we did our best to guess it was possibly the M-3 or M-4 going off of Brad's M-3c stats of the Saladin you based it on found on this site. They then wrote into the refit backstory that one of the 'reasons' the original Swordfishes did so poorly in the convoy battle back a ways was the ship was indeed overweight and due to some back room nonsense this got covered up until the R'Archer report found out about it. They then assumed based on your further posts brickwall that the three Swordfishes got shelved from any real use until this refit. So here we go then! Enjoy and comment please!
The Swordfish destroyer become something of a 'famed' or 'infamous' bloody nose to the pride of the KUSN after one of its convoys was attacked by a band of Klingons in the 2260s. After action reports and investigations by then Admiral R'Archer found that cover ups had been done by corrupt officials among the Knip Scrapyards that designed the trio of destroyers. The ships had been touted as a class VIII weight vessel, but their actual tonnage and performance was much higher. This meant that on one of their first escort missions it cost the lives of hundreds of colonial crews and the escorts themselves. These corrupt officials were of course fired from Knip and the three destroyers 'retired for training' to the Home Fleet for several years.
It was not until after action reports from the exploration of the Ur regions by the Pride Of Fire and further actions in the coming years that prompted the now Fleet Admiral R'Archer to commission several new ship designs to bolster the KUSN and in some ways prepare for a possible engagement with the new enemy known as the Tordell Empire. But as 2267 continued the overtaxed shipyards around the Unity were unable to fully meet his requests for a new research cruiser. Further due to strapped costs and materials limitations the ability to design and build a new class of ship for his requests was no on the table. In a bold move Knip Scrapyards hoping to recover some of their investments and to perhaps bolster future investments from the KUSN proposed the idea of refitting the three Swordfish destroyers into the needed research cruisers.
When the proposal was brought to R'Archer for approval as well as the Unity Congress many in its chairs balked at the second chance. But in a surprise turn R'Archer was heard to declare, "Everyone makes mistakes. If Knip can fill the contract request I put forth in the time remaining and come within its limited budget then I say let them try." he said. Murmurs accompanied his words, and a three day debate resulted before finally the go ahead was given to Knip to redeem themselves. They had but 6 months to refit the three ships and get them ready for testing. Nervous but undaunted Knip's team lead by a Tellarite Captain named Forz Soth got to work.
With barely 5 days to spare, by the end of September 2267 the refitting of all three ships had been completed. The original FWC-2 drive system which had created the mistakes of the past had been gutted, in its place was a Orion/Unity copy of the Federation's FWE-2 drive system. This greatly reduced the ship's overall weight back into the original class VIII range. It did mean a drop in overall power reserves though, to make up the difference two more copies of the Federation FIC-3 engines were constructed and mounted to port and starboard on the saucer's hull. The original M-4 computer core was kept in its place, put adjustments to its processing capabilities allowed a small reduction in overall crew needs. This allowed some expansion of the ship's science labs and recreational accomodations for its new role as a research cruiser. Finally, somewhat expanded cargo bays rounded out the redesigns in this area for longer operations from base.
Another major adjustment to the original destroyer platform was in its arrangement of its weapons array. One of the major problems found by R'Archer's report beyond the overweight corruption problem, was that the ship lacked rearward firing weaponry. With this in mind the Knip design team adjusted the phaser firing patterns to allow a better coverage pattern of the phaser systems. Next they removed the klingon KD-11 disruptor in the forward bow and replaced it with another copied and built FH-5. Finally one of the FP-1 torpedo launchers from the forward arc was removed and rebuilt into the aft arc to round out the redesign. With the removal of the KD-11 more extensive sensor systems were put in place to assist in its new role as a research cruiser.
With the rebuilds complete with days to spare, and coming slightly under budget and weight this time, the Knip design team lead by Captain Forz Soth presented the now Swordfish Research Cruisers to R'Archer and the KUSN for approval testing. The result was the ship had slightly less power and superstructure then the original destroyer. It was also slightly less maneuverable, but given it was not intended to be a true combat vessel this was deemed acceptable. Happy with the result the testing teams gave the green light for the refitted ship's commissioning and once more the HHS Swordfish, HHS Marlin and HHS Narwhal returned to the KUSN ship inventory in an active role by December of 2267. No plans however, are in place to build more of these ships.
