So here is another ship design by my buddy Sam, also related to last weekend's PC/NPC Roleplay session using his tellarite Captain (again that pc/npc profile will get up soon as I can!), the idea was for a smallerish ship to perform light freighter and passenger courier duties in and around KUSN space. For hull shape he based it fully on the sleek Guard Dog class heavy gunboat, but beyond the design similarities all the systems are his own idea.
In late 2265, an up and coming enginerring officer in the KUSN put aside his naval work to take a break and delve into the realm of ship design which had always been a side passion of his. Having served with the KUSN since late 2262 he had recognized a need in the fleet for a small, fast, light freighter and passenger courier ship. Pulling funds in from several key friends and family among various merchant trades, some legal others not so much, he commissioned a group of Orion designers with the task to modify a copy of the KUSN's attack dog heavy gunboat and change it into a light freighter/courier ship. The design work sadly went through several redesigns as unfortunately for the Tellarite commander many of his backers wanted to put their stamp on the design too in one form or another. This held up production and roll out of what should have been an easy rebuild. But by late 2267 the delays actually worked in his favor as new Orion computer designs coming into the market allowed many of these desired backer's stamps to come to light and be added. So it was by March of 2268 that the contract for the first 10 Puppy Dog Class IV Light Freighter/Couriers came rolling off several Orion shipyards within the Triangle. The order in total would by August of that same year top out for now at 30 built ships. To recoup some of his loss of credits, the Tellarite commander was able to secure a deal with the Orion companies to reduce the overall costs on all three batches by 20% by selling them the rights to the design through the KUSN after their approval. So it was by October of 2268 that KUSN took ownership of all 30 Puppy Dog light freighters/couriers which arrived in convoy after the long trek up from the Triangle.
After another month of shakedown tests the end result was that the KUSN was quite happy with these additions to their fleet. Fast, robust, and able to haul a fair bit of cargo and passengers, as well as containing a decent bit of armament for their size and purpose they were soon a common sight on the spacelanes in and around Unity space usually kept in packs of three for all missions. This allowed them to work together to protect each other, increase profits of passenger/cargo sent and reduce the need for other manned escorts from most common pirate raider groups.
While the overall shape of the Puppy Dog is strongly resembling the Attack Dog it was based on, some changes had been made. The first was that all the core systems were off the shelf Orion designs. The computer core was a stock Mark IV system. The warp core was built around the OWA-2 system, but unlike the Attack Dog which had four nacelles the Puppy Dog only had 2, this allowed the Puppy Dogs to be given external landing gear capability to land on planetary ports of appropriate size. The impulse reaction systems were made up of the OID-1 system with two engines mounted on the rear of the vessel. Armament was made up of two banks of OD-6 disruptors with the coverage pattern allowing a full 180* fire pattern from port/starboard forward/aft. A limited torpedo launching system was also included of the OP-3 system, with 1 launcher to the forward arc and one to aft. Shielding systems were made up of the OSL design. Finally to aide in both further protection and the like light layering of hull reinforcement was given.
Internally the Puppy Dogs are of moderate enjoyment for the assigned 18 crew members. Basic double bunks and a small living space provide simple creature comforts for them on their missions. Passenger accommodations are much better off, while not the most luxurious they are of above average quality for a ship of this type, and so far are one of the commonly commented highlights by passengers embarking on these ships. The cargo bays are simple but to the point allowing an equal wealth of cargo and supplies to be transported without affecting the ship's speed or maneuverability.
