Dear friends and FASA Trek fans, I regret to inform you all that Nichelle Nichols -- the original Uhura - - has passed away at the age of 89.
Here is the report on her passing from Rolling Stone magazine:
She will be missed by all who love and have loved STAR TREK. May she rest in eternal peace.

Words escape me, as they always tend to during these occasions.
There are, of course, other bad things happening in the world at this very moment. It doesn't make moments like these any easier, though, for those of us who appreciated ST:TOS.
We carry the torch that others hand to us. How far we go with it is up to our own actions. We know that we can't carry it all of the way to where it should arrive. We can only hope that, whomever takes it from us at the end, it will one day reach a milestone that we can only dream of... And that is why we carry it as far as we can.

Yeah tbh i was floored when I learned about this! So sad to read about and hear. She was a woman among many at those times far ahead of her own in doing things to better others over the many decades since. I remember the first time I watched TOS back in the 80s when I was super young late at night and my Dad would hold me on the couch till I fell asleep. It was always in the late 1100 timeslot and i'd usually last from the start of a show till the end of it watching reruns lol. I vaguely recall one discussion I had with him probably when I was 2 or 3, old enough to recognize differences in skin etc. I asked something like 'why was that lady not white' or something innocent like that. He explained about different races and cultures in his own limited way. Later when I was like....maybe 5 or 6 my Dad took me to a Star Trek convention in I think it was Philadelphia here in PA or maybe Baltimore? TBH I can't recall. But I got lucky to meet Brent Spiner, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Takei, Nichelle and one or two others from TOS and TNG. I recall she was taking time to give each fan near her table a little chat if they wanted for a few minutes. I think I said something about how I watched her 'when I was younger' (Funny to say when you're only 5/6 lol) and she laughed asking what I remember her doing on TOS at the time. Without a beat I said 'you were trying to distract sulu so scotty could get you all home with the transporter when you were taken to that evil universe!' (it was mirror, mirror scene where she distracts mirror sulu if you didn't guess somehow lol). Takei who was next to her on the right chuckled and both commented about some banter they did with the filming staff on that scene, I don't recall the exact words now though. Either way she was a pure gem to chat with for little me at the time.
RIP fair lady may your journey into the final frontier and undiscovered country be an epic one as the life you lived among us!

I can't believe it took me this long to learn about this. It's a shame I meant to read her autobiography. No time like the present.
