Ok, brickwall, here's another of my Federation designs for your perusal. Took me a bit longer than planned, and I might alter the dates a bit still, but here you go.

Backstory for the ManualThe
Belknap class cruiser project had an unusual genesis. Originally designed to complement the
Constitution class as a cheaper to build light cruiser to add to the Galaxy Exploration Command fleet, the introduction of newer Klingon vessels such as the D-7M
K't'inga class and newer D-10 variants, as well as the re-emergance of the Romulans onto the galactic scene after almost a century changed this plan.
Transferred to Military Operations Command, the new class was designed as a main line cruiser, with basic astronomical research labs, and a smaller crew and shuttle complement. The smaller secondary hull and lowered warp nacelles resulted in a faster, more maneuverable vessel, which meant more power was available to the weapon suite.
The 18 planned vessels would be assigned to the Klingon and Romulan borders, to supplement the existing light patrol vessels. The rising unease of the Federation border stations at perceived Klingon and Romulan aggression in future was eased with their introduction
The first vessels of the Mk I were designed originally with the FH-3 phasers and FP-5 torpedoes, to complement MK III and IV
Constitutions, The first vessel was actually the
USS Decatur, built using the old style circumferencal warp nacelles, but as the
Decatur keel was laid down on Stardate 2/1506, Starfleet Command began implementing the linear refit program, and the upgraded design became know as the
Belknap class, after the second vessel planned.
The resultant Mk II design therefore upgraded the phasers to the heavier FH-9, and adding an aft emitter, while retaining the FP-5 torps, as well as adding the FIG-1 impulse drive, doubling impulse power. Although originally built using older technology, the
Decatur was partially upgraded to a Mk Ia status (see above schematic), and used as a training vessel for the class, similar to the old
Constitution class
USS Republic before she was lost on Stardate 2/08?? With the new Mk II design, the original plan to complement the
Constitution class was modified, resulting in the
Belknaps supporting the
Constitutions that were upgraded to
Enterprise class.
The Mk IIs were successful in patrolling both the Federation and Romulan Neutral Zones, freeing up the
Constitution and newer
Enterprise classes to exploration duties. Over time, as they encountered increased Klingon aggression, they earned their stripes many times over. However, as these Klingon border encounters increased, three vessel packs were encountered more often. As the Mk IIs came to the end of their first five year patrols, a refit was proposed.
The Mk III refit plan is to modify the deflector system to the quad-phase FSP shielding system. All Mk II vessels are planned to be refit to this standard, and an additional 7 vessels added to the complement, for a total of 25 vessels. There are 16 patrolling the Klingon border, and the remaining 9 assigned to the Romulan Neutral Zone.
Recently, an appropriation has been submitted by Starfleet Command for two additional vessels of a Mk IV standard (
USS Raan and
USS Sur Cha), to serve as command ship variants, one each on the Klingon and Romulan borders. These vessels would have their phaser suite modified to have four heavier FH-11s forwards, and their aft suite modified to three FH-9s, as well as an aft firing FP-5 torpedo. Additional command and control facilities would be fitted, which are of course classified at this time. The Federation Council is currently deliberating on these appropriations.
With all other vessels planned to being finally upgraded to Mk III specifications, these cruisers are intended to serve Starfleet for at least the next two decades.
My Design notes and thoughtsI've always liked this design since I first saw it. These stats and story are how I envisaged this class, before I read the backstory for the class in the "Ships of the Starfleet" tech manual, as a slightly smaller cruiser that supplemented the
Enterprise class. I've tried to fit it into the FASA timeframe correctly, and hopefully my design thoughts can be seen in the backstory. The MK III costs in CE terms about the same as a MK I
Enterprise class, so not too powerful compared to that class. I used the Irregular Minis
Gorshkov mini years ago, though these days, you might be able to find an actual
Belknap mini on Shapeways. I've also seen a few scratchbuilds of this class on TMP, have a look at the pics in this post "Recon 2017 - Race for Gamma Tauri IV (Full Thrust)"...
theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=452972...and the ImageShack pics from that post as well here...
