Between Gold Key and the LP album art, I just loved that old style. To later learn the Gold Key artists were actually a couple guys in Italy who were only working with a few studio stills to produce what they got makes it even more wonderful to me. They never even saw the show while it was around! While I am admittedly looking to mine story ideas from these comics, I today rec'd a cd of the complete gold key set off ebay, a UK seller.
Flipping through a few issues, Kirk has a knife strapped to his belt, there's a canteen hanging off someone's waist in another shot, landing party uniforms, new devices and equipment and of course, rocket exhaust out of not only the nacelles, but also the hangar deck. Ahhh, those crisp early days of ~1964/5 when this was all being concepted out. It's such a unique take on the entire mythos, yet is strongly the same. It's like the original reboot of sorts, except this one honors the source material that was known at the time to the artists at least.
Where they expounded, it was into areas that were not covered before. There's a space genie reminiscent of Apollo, but the similarities stop there. There are even pubilcity stills that are simply not around anymore at all and appear pretty rare for even then. Kirk with a long-neck microphone device never seen in the show, for example.
I know I had a few issues as a kid, but these are all essentially brand new to me in every way. Looking forward to seeing what I can bring into the present day! A 60-yr old time capsule of sorts. Khan would be pleased.
