When people were running their STSTCS games, did you use the standard FASA version of the layout of the main Empires? Or did you modify it for some particular reason?
When I first got hold of the FASA RPG system and the STSTCS game, I already had the "Star Trek Navigation Maps" set by Geoffry Mandel. I was surprised to see that although the FASA layout was basically the same, it was much smaller. Because I started with the RPG first, I used the scale of the Navigation Maps, but liked the idea of the Triangle, and incorporated that into our games. I preferred the Starbase layout in Maps as well, even though that means no major Starbase in near any of the Neutral Zone borders with the Klingons and Romulans. So the FASA layout that had Orion Space seperating two major Starbases wasn't in my layout, but I did like the idea of the 'neutral enclave' that FASA gave the Orions, with all the problems that caused the Federation and Klingons in particular.
Basically, if I used the stats for planets from FASA books, I used the co-ordinates where they were in the Maps if it was in both, and added the new FASA created systems to their approximate locations if you drew the two maps as the same size, but not the same scale.
So how did everyone else go with this. Straight FASA, modified FASA, or their own ideas?

In order to keep things simple, I just stuck with the FASA approved though probably geographically inaccurate map of the Federation from the book of the same name. I did have to make some allignment adjustments though when I made my map of the Alpha Quadrant powers. Both the Klingon and the Romulan maps were off.
I have thought of making modifications to the map in the past, but stuck with it as is in order to keep the confusion down. If I had a new group of players instead of my long-time cronies I could do a revision of it, but since most of these jokers know the original map inside and out, it would probably just screw them up.
In order to show that the Federation has kept expanding I have added a few new races to the map over the years. I have also pushed out the borders of all the known races. I also included the Kinshaya. Since my timeline stops well before TNG, I haven't bothered with any of the races like the Cardassians, the Breen, etc.

I used my own star charts inspired by the Franz Joseph tech manual. I really liked the Triangle and added that in. Over the years I realized that the size postulated by Joseph was past unworkable and verging on absurd, so I rescaled my charts and used a bit more of the FASA data. Were I to find players today, I think I would use the nodal model from Star Trek Dimension.

Our gaming group did not involve itself too much in terms of 'mapping' the FASA Trek universe. However, being aware that FASA's universe did not mesh 100% with Star Trek (artistic liberties), we simply accepted that FASA's Trekverse was what it was...a little different.
