INTRODUCTIONThe Abythis Protectorate is a race I developed back in the late 1980's as part of a larger campaign involving the Federation and the Tholians. In this storyline, the Protectorate were, at first contact, friendly and open to dialogue and trade with the Federation, however it was all a ruse. The Protectorate was a dying race on the verge of extinction. Their technology was stretched to the limit in trying to extend their survival until such time as they could revive their species and return to their place of dominance in the Alpha Quadrant. Upon meeting humans, whom they were genetically compatible with, the Protectorate began a campaign of subterfuge and lies in order to trick the Federation into helping them find a cure for the mysterious ailment that was dooming them to extinction. At first, the ruse worked. The Federation was willing to lend aid until a cure was found. It wasn't until the reason for the Abythis peoples plight was discovered that the true nature of the Abythis Protectorate was revealed. The Protectorate used to be a very powerful, aggressive species bent on galactic domination. The Abythis Galactic Empire spanned most of the Alpha Quadrant and enslaved trillions from lesser species who could not hold back the onslaught of the empires might. They were responsible for the genocide of numerous races during their reign of terror until a very powerful race from the far side of the Delta Quadrant stepped in. This unknown race began to systematically remove the Abythis from the area; stripping the outer systems first, then cutting through vast areas of the empire, isolating and eventually removing these pockets. During the campaign, the Abythis began to experiment with genetic enhancement in order to better combat the mysterious race that was dominating them. The experiment gave the Abythis people extended life spans, however it had a horrible side effect. It caused a deformation in a gene that would slowly cause them to eventually become sterile. Broken and defeated, the empire was forced to restructure it's operations. Unable to recover, they retreated back to their home world and developed a protectorate state. Their once lush home world was slowly stripped of its resources in an attempt to extend their life spans even further while a cure for their failure was found. Forced back out into space when their home world was stripped raw, they revived what was left of their space fleet, cannibalizing much of it in order to get what few space vessels they could operational. They slowly revived several of the dormant settlements in the surrounding systems and began stripping them as well. The campaign was set as an ongoing mystery; a story arc that lasted over a year (and we used to play a lot back then). The reports on the vessels that follow were written during the opening months of the campaign by one of the players. They have been reworked into something that hopefully doesn't sound like it was written by a 15/16 year old fanboy. NOTE: These reports are not in the original order they were written. theSwede

Deathshroud Class XII Heavy CruiserFASAdate 2/2903.21 As reported by: Captain Jarvin Surik, U.S.S. Hood A quick briefing on the Abythis Protectorate's Deathshroud Class XII Heavy Cruiser The Deathshroud class heavy cruiser is the the last operating example of the Protectorate's once superior technology. While the propulsion systems are very similar to the Federation's latest developments, many of these engines have been in service for over two hundred years, and indications are that these are actually a downgrade from previous models. It is in the defensive and ordinance systems where the technological superiority is most affluent. The shielding array is a quintuple phase transducer system producing tremendous protection for a ship this size. While our FSS system is comparable in protection, the Abythis model outstrips our finest by requiring less power. The missile systems parallel our most powerful model, the FP-4, in both range and damage, however the launch mechanisms are highly advanced, providing broader firing arcs in a foolproof delivery system. The phaser arrays are also highly advanced. While the damage curve mirrors the Federation's FH-11, the range of this particular model is 40,000 kilometres greater (my chart Z, included). The current model of the Deathshroud mounts nine emitters in what the Abythis call "collimator rings". Each of these rings mounts three emitters, which not only provide unimaginable firing arcs for the ship, but allow the power from one, two, or all three emitters to be massed into one powerful shot or left broken up into three separate shots. (the collimator costs 10% in weight and superstructure over and above the total of all the emitters put in it. theSwede) The Protectorate navy has one other weapon in its arsenal that may be cause for some concern. They called it a Subspace Particle Accelerator. This usually massive weapon is highly destructive and nearly impossible to defend against. While the workings of the device are not known to me, it is my understanding that the weapon basically hyper accelerates particles captured from the warp drives subspace envelope and projects them toward the target. As these hyper-charged particles begin to decelerate, they slip back into normal space with a tremendous release of energy. When calibrated properly, the subspace particles are supposed to detonate "within" the confines of the ship, rendering the shields totally useless. The weapon, though not totally inaccurate, suffers from one main drawback. The particles cannot be tracked, so the mathematics for the detonation must be done in advance, making any deviation of utmost importance. (to simulate this, roll two die ten. If the numbers match, the particles detonate inside the ship for full damage. Double the casualties. If they don't, the shot detonates outside the shield radius, thus doing damage to the shields first. Subtract the difference between the two from the total damage of the shot.) Since the particles travel through subspace, nothing blocks line of sight. While Protectorate design may appear almost laughably simplistic, it is this simplicity that has allowed the Abythis vessels to survive for the last several centuries. In addition, the cylindrical design provides enormous structural strength while sacrificing minimal internal space. The decks of the cylindrical hull run perpendicular to the orientation of the ship, while the decks on the wedge shaped forward hulls run parallel. While these ships may look archaic, they are not to be taken lightly. As one of only two major capital ships left in the Abythis navy, the Deathshroud is more than a match for an Excelsior. It is little surprise as to the reasons behind the designs longevity. Abythis Protectorate Monolith Class XVI BattleshipFASAdate 2/2904.05 As reported by: Captain Jarvin Surik, U.S.S. Hood As the largest capital ship currently still in service with the Protectorate Navy, it would stand to reason that it should have been reported on first. It is difficult to admit that I find myself still awestruck by this gargantuan vessel. At over 500 meters long and well over 350,000 metric tonnes, it leaves a rather lasting impression on anyone fortunate (or, perhaps, unfortunate) enough to see it. As my command crew would attest, the sight of this leviathan of the skies slipping past us in the darkness of space would cause even a Deltan's hair to stand on end. It is for this reason alone that I have taken so long to file this report. If the Deathshroud was a rapier of the Abythis naval might, then the Monolith was the blunt object of their dominance. Bristling with turrets and phaser mounts, this monument to the art of war is a frightening reminder of what the Abythis were capable of. While the Monolith carries the largest subspace accelerator cannon the Abythis can field, broadside is how this vessel was designed to fight. When set up so, the Monolith can bring all fifteen phasers and twelve of its sixteen photon torpedoes to bear. If managed properly, the Monolith can actually fire the entire volley, crushing anything and everything it can touch. Defensively, the Monolith is sound, with adequate shielding for a vessel this size, but it is the incredible structural integrity provided by the cylindrical design that give the Monolith its phenomenal endurance. It is quite possible for the ship to take several direct hits unprotected and still have ample fight left to subdue its enemy. As with any vessel this size, it is the lack of efficient combat maneuverability that provides the Monolith with its Achilles Heel. The ship requires a large amount of power in order to overcome its bulk and mass. Of course, one has to remember that this vessel isn't designed as a dog fighter, its meant to simply kill the dog. As I have explained in the previous reports, the resources of the Abythis Protectorate seem to be at a premium, so I have debated as to how a race that spends almost all its resources, time, and material on preserving the species keeps such a large vessel running (let alone any of the others for that matter). The answer, I soon discovered, frightened me. The lone Monolith we were opportune enough to catch a glimpse of was fresh from a repair/refit cycle. While our guide and supervisor, Lord Unrah, was occupied with other business, we managed to scan the area where the massive ship had come from. Dozens of hulks, cannibalized for parts, lay just at the extreme edge of the system. We managed to count approximately 50 of these giant derelicts before we raised suspicion. It is my belief that the Abythis, who only field five or six Monolith vessels, used to have many, many more. It ponders one to think of just what caused this catastrophic downturn in what once must have been a very powerful interstellar superpower. It is my recommendation that the Federation keep a close watch on this race while opening up diplomatic relations. While Lord Unrah has been gracious during our visit, many of my questions remain unanswered. Cruxis Class VI FrigateFASAdate 2/2903.21 As reported by: Captain Jarvin Surik, U.S.S. Hood A quick overview of the Cruxis Class VI Frigate While not really a frigate in the modern sense, like the Northampton or Chandley class vessels, the Cruxis is more along the lines of the Loknar class frigate, a small, durable fire platform meant specifically for the art of ship to ship combat. While the Cruxis isn't the most numerous in the Abythis naval roster, it is the oldest combat vessel they field. The current model, the type G, saw a return to service before Terra's first contact with the Vulcans centuries ago. While hardly the cutting edge of technology, the Cruxis class has allowed the Protectorate to bolster its dwindling supply of front line vessels with its simple design and ease of repair. Retrofitted with a pair of externally mounted ASPA-1 subspace cannons, the increase in firepower has allowed it to remain a decent firepower platform. The increase in firepower cost the ship its maneuverability, but in the long run the trade off was worth it. The cannons require less power to arm, saving more for movement. The cannons also out range the ships phasers, another check in the plus column. The age and level of technology used on these vessels is apparent, even from a simple external viewing. Of the several vessels that were docked at the Abythis base, many were in rough shape. Patchwork repairs were apparent, so too was evidence of jury rigged, one-of-a-kind repairs to various pieces of equipment. Some even carried signs of what can only be described as "rust". My contact, Lord Retak Unrah, mentioned that most of these vessels were pulled out of mothball, the one vessel docked near us was well over five centuries old, and he told me his first command was on a Cruxis frigate that was close to a thousand years old! While I didn't show my disbelief in his story, I found it strange that any race would find it necessary to push the limits of their vessels to that length. When I casually asked why they would allow a ship to be in service for so long, Lord Unrah simply stated that it was necessary to do so since so much of the Abythis' resources were geared toward the preservation of the race; building new ships for the navy was not possible. It was at this point I realized that the Abythis were not just a race on the verge of collapse, they were a race on the verge of extinction. who were the enemy's of them from Delta Quadrant? The race in question was one of my own invention as well. I have been reluctant to release any of the info since they were designed for a specific purpose. They are very powerful and were meant to give players a way out when things went horribly wrong and had gone well beyond any form of self salvation. Kind of my version of divine intervention. theSwede

Spectre Class V DestroyerFASAdate 2/2903.21 (March 21, 2286) As reported by: Captain Jarvin Surik, U.S.S. Hood A brief overview of the Spectre Class V Destroyer The Spectre class destroyer was originally designed to replace the ever aging Cruxis class vessels, but when Abythis resources became strained, the construction of the new destroyer was halted. While the Protectorate maintains these ships regularly, there haven't been any plans to update or upgrade the fleet. Even though it was meant as a replacement for the Cruxis, the Spectre shares similar characteristics to its much older predecessor. They have a common, single engine arrangement, and even the basic spaceframes share comparable design concepts. The Spectre, however, is an obviously more modern vessel. The warp/impulse engine system provides better power to movement in addition to improved warp performance. The four phaser emitters are carried in two advanced collimator mounts instead of the static point turrets that the Cruxis carries. The subspace cannon is mounted in the wedge shaped bow, and looks as if it was part of the design from the start, not tacked on as an afterthought. Defensively, the Spectre carries shielding better than or equal to much larger Federation designs. The vessel also presents a very small aspect target from the front. The Spectre is unique to standard Abythis design philosophy. Unlike other Protectorate vessels, all the decks on the Spectre run parallel to the ships external orientation as opposed to perpendicular. Gothika Class III CorvetteFASAdate 2/2903.15 Reported by Captain Jarvin Surik, U.S.S. Hood A breif overview of the Gothika Class III Corvette The last warship the Abythis could produce in any numbers, the Gothika class corvette is a meager compromise between a highly stretched resource budget and the need to maintain military sovereignty over the dwindling Protectorate holdings. An increase in need for topaline, the primary mineral used in advanced life support systems, on the home planet put an end to the construction of spacecraft for the Protectorate navy, including the Gothika. At this time, the Gothika corvette is the most numerous of the remaining Abythis naval assets. A very simple, aerodynamic design, the Gothika is still a modest firepower platform, carrying three medium/long range phasers of average power. Meant to be used in groups of three or four, the Gothika can easily surround and overwhelm much larger vessels with its high maneuverability. It's high powered shield system provides excellent covorage for a ship this small, capable of repelling all but the most powerful weapons in the Federation arsenal. This small, compact ship, is also capable of moderate scouting duties. Since the supplies needed for the maintenance of life support systems are at such a premium, long range exploration missions are no longer possible, even with the Gothika. Several vessels have been outfitted with automated, robotic systems for use in long range exploration in search of fresh topaline supplies, however a few have been lost due to A.I. malfunctions. Since these rogue vessels are a considerable distance out from the Protectorate, they have been considered unrecoverable.
