Definitely a good start on the Alamo - she was on my to do list for many years, but I don't really have the time to invest any more.
You did some really good work with the Whitewind, have you got any of the other aliens in mind?

I'm still mostly working on the Federation. I started working on the V-30, but building 3D models of these ships really opens your eyes to the fact that many of these ships different views don't actually match up. A lot of building these ships requires you to just make stuff up to make them match. There are a lot of ships I've started and have on the back burner because they are really hard to fix.
Really I need to go back over the Whitewind and bring her up to the standards of my other ships. I like the model I made, but it is very low detail. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of source material to use as reference for non federation ships.

Excellent.
I'm sure the Genser is on top of that backburner list.

I know most people think these type of vessels are well an expensive wasteful expendature, but they do have their uses.
One of the uses for these kind of bases it so set it up on guard as part of the defenses of a star base. put it in orbit around a strategic place of importance and so on. the firepower these outposts can bring to the fight are incredible. Even the Invictus outpost can be a devastating weapons platform.
I have learned that most people are very weary when it comes to bringing their ships into range of these monsters.
the alamo calss is the Federations ultimate example of a orbital defense outpost. and man it can hold up entire invasions fleets....Buy that time for a response force and so on.
The best offense against one of these things is simply not to fight it, but to bypass it during an invasion. I have seen an Alamo bitterly molest two Klingon L-24 battleships in play.
In campaigns, these ships can be very useful. I have already mentioned their value in keeping important places guarded, but they are also excellent for keeping the lines of communication open.
Also with some planing in a campaign they also make excellent siege weapons, but it takes time to get them into place. they have to be towed.
they are truly useful when played right.

I also in campaigns see them as plot scanning pieces by this i mean i figure these things gotta have some of the best long range scanning equipment around that is too complex to mount on any starship

More detail. It's gonna take a while to detail this thing fully. It's BIG.

Ok, I think the detail is done on the top portion of the station. Still a long way to go.

What kind of a program do you use to make your designs? Is it some sort CAD program or something else? And once you're done can you send them to a 3D printer for use on a game board?

These are all built in Sketchup. They can be converted for 3D printing but it can be a pain. Something like this station would probably need to be printed in parts and then assembled.

Lol, When I mirrored parts the mirrored part is reverse so I have to fix it. I "fixed" the wrong one. Should be all better now. Guess that's what I get for working late
