When asked about it, they were careful to say it was a great enjoyable movie - but it was too much boom! boom! blast em up non stop!
They said it wasn't about anything. Trek was plays with a moral. NuTrek is nothing more than eye candy.
I agreed with that years ago.

When I saw the first JJ Abrams movie, I was anticipating that the 'Captain Kirk' character would engage in a Lightsaber duel with the bad guy.
Garbage

At least Space Balls had merit. This JJTrek is nothing but a warm turd. I wonder what laws of Physics he'll entirely ignore in the next flick?

I wonder what they'll think about Star Trek: Beyond? Seems to be more Flash, Bang, Wallop going by the trailers! And that's before the lens flares and that motorbike!

I saw the first Nu-Trek movie for free, and wanted my money back. I refuse to see the rest until Paramount is done with this garbage. I am apprehensive about "Discovery".

Sadly - as I understand it, the last film (Beyond) was apparently decent...(doubt it myself but).
Problem is, it basically flopped at the box-office, very dependent on overseas ticket sales to at least make something.
That's what you get after making a crap movie.

We should really define what "crap" movie means in the case of Trek. I say :
DON'T violate GRs characters. Give them the same traits, not opposite ones. That isn't creativity. DON'T design your own version of a ship. Make it basically the same. DON"T violate each and every Science principle when it shows up. That is utter stupidity.

I wouldn't want too much fidelity to GR's vision. After all, GR's idea of the perfect Star Trek plot for a second TOS pilot was "The Omega Glory."
Star Trek: Beyond was the best of the three JJ-Trek movies.

Ya but GR's vision got filtered thru others and we have ALL of TOS from that. JJ decided to throw it in the trash and ignore it. I have heard 2nd hand that he hated Trek. So why the hell get someone like that to direct it??
PS - What I loved most about Beyond is that they destroyed that frikkin monstrosity JJ enTURDprise.

There was only me and four others there! When the JJ Prise was crashing one guy in his late 50s cried out "..Come on hurry up and explode or crash already god!" then at the end when the ent-a showed up he goes "..Oh come on you Mother Fu****s!! You had ONE chance to make us old fans happy with something a little similar to what we knew but nooooo fuck you guys!" we all high fived him and laughed on the way out

So, if "Kilo-NAZI" is the metric unit for measuring evil, would the metric unit for SUCK be the "Abrams"?
And it's not just Star Trek. He managed to turn Star Wars into a sophomoric fan-fiction.

Much it the same way that Coolness is measured in Fonzies? Or that Alternate history is measured in units of Turtledoves? Isn't Fan Fiction measured in Twilights ... for how bad it is?

"Turtledoves"! I had not hear that one. Appropriate and very funny. Turtledoves likely refers i'm assuming to the amazing alt history author harry turtledove he did some great stuff back in the day!

To be fair, the actors were great. They looked the part, they acted the part, they were all very good. But their scripts just blew.
I guess it's like Timothy Dalton's bond movies. He was a cool Bond stuck in amazingly "meh" movies

A bad movie or TV show is rarely the fault of the cast itself (sadly, their careers are often killed anyway). Usually, it's the fault of the idiots in suits who think they know best - and as such the scripting and direction is often total crap...

Couldn't find any TNG cast comments about "Beyond" , but I can't imagine them thinking it any good.

I think I saw a couple TNG cast comments that weren't very nice but, I can't remember where.

It's kind of in bad taste to say something unflattering about the franchise one is associated with. I think the volumes of radio silence from TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT cast members says a lot about Nu-Trek in general.
