CHESSELL CLASS XII HEAVY CRUISER
design by theSwede using parts from Vance's tool kits. Modifications by theSwede
The original Chessell class vessels fell victim to extinction during the Four Years War with the Klingon Empire. The last known version of this design met its heroic but untimely end during the Battle of Falgor in 1/9602. The subsequent disarming program that followed the end of the war meant that combat vessels like the Chessell were to be put to rest. Fate, however, seemed to favor this storied class; it’s destiny to become a fabled design solidly locked.
After nearly 20 years of service, the first of the gallant Enterprise class vessels were slated for decommissioning. Many of these ships were refits from the Constitution class and their age was beginning to show. While the new Excelsior class vessels were figured on being the successor to the Enterprise, a smaller, well-armed complimentary vessel was deemed necessary. When the Mk-IV Enterprise was developed, the plan for a new “keel-up” design was nearly cancelled, but as was stated earlier, fate had other plans.
While the tendering for the new design was in full swing, a young astronautical engineer who happened to be a history buff came across the archived plans for the Chessell class battlecruiser. While the original had never meant to be anything more than a heavy firepower platform and the new design required that the ship be able to perform scientific as well as combat, the Chessell design seemed an unlikely candidate. Fortunately, thirty-two years of technological advancement allowed the young designer to incorporate the required scientific equipment and maintain the Chessells legendary combat abilities; keeping the one thing that gave the original its biggest advantage, its compact size. The proposed new design was so impressive that Starfleet’s Appropriations Committee agreed to commission sixteen vessels. The Chessell class had risen from the ashes to command the stars once more.
The heart of the vessel is the very warp system that has given the Enterprise class its new lease on life, the FTWC-2 warp drive. This new system gives the Chessell unrivalled warp capabilities while providing a good base for power to movement. Unlike the Enterprise class, the rear deck of the Chessell’s main hull is considerably larger, allowing the Chessell to carry a much larger impulse drive. The FIG-2 system produces twice the power of the FIF system used on the Enterprise class. This additional power gives the Chessell unmatched manoeuvrability for a vessel in its weight class.
The firepower of the new Chessell pays homage to the original. The redesign centres its offence on a heavy missile weapon compliment. Three heavy photon torpedoes, two forward, one aft, are supplemented by three more medium range, medium damage systems. Backing up the torpedoes are three FH-3 phaser banks covering the forward and abeam arcs while the heavy FH-11 covers the rear. While it may seem an unusual configuration, it was necessary in order to fit the scientific equipment into the main part of the forward saucer section.
The defensive capabilities of the new redesign are also very reflective of the original. Once again, the compactness of the ship has required the structural reinforcement be spread through the entire vessel. Even though the new Chessell is thirty meters longer than the original, its structural integrity is actually higher. This is enhanced by the solid double phase shift transducer shield system used on the Enterprise class. Subsequent variants of the Chessell have been upgraded to the same system used on the Excelsior, further improving the defensive capabilities of this already intimidating design.
Three version of the new Chessell class have been produced so far, each consecutive one improving the offensive and defensive systems. The redesign of the Chessell improves upon the original by utilizing the same modular technology that was first implemented on the Krigaren, a tri-nacelled contemporary of the Chessell that has survived a long career.
The original is known as the Mk-Ia. The Mk-II was introduced three years later with an improved shielding system that parallels the type found on the Excelsior. The Mk-III came online five years after the Mk-II when an improved version of the FP-6 was introduced. Called the FP-6a, it increases the offensive range of the torpedo to 180,000km and improves the mid-range accuracy. The venerable FH-3 phasers, the main forward beam weapons, were also replaced with the more powerful FH-10, which were just as accurate as the original beams, but with a 40% increase in damage potential.
Further plans for the Chessell are in the works, and a Mk-IV variant is currently on the drawing board with a projected date of 2/45.
