In keeping with the theme others have started, I intend to place all my new and upgraded Federation designs here in this thread. Comments are welcome, as always.

My first post in this thread is a project I have been working on for a little while. Some of my players have decided that they want to try being Merchant Princes around the TMP era, more specifically, around ST-V and VI movies. I have updated several ships for this campaign, including the much maligned Fenlon Monitor, which I have even built a pseudo-replica mini for. It isn't exact, but it gets the point across.


With the ever increasing size of the Federation, maintaining control over the vast network of commerce has become a problem, especially along the Orion/Triangle corridors as well as the Triangle itself. The size of armed merchantmen vessels has increased in the last 20 years as well, with several Orion Syndicate families building larger "enforcer" vessels. In order to protect Federation industrial and commercial interests, a much tougher vessel was needed.

The Fenlon, Starfleets only monitor, was lagging behind the times, so the engineers at the Alpha Centauri shipyards began tinkering with the prospect of upgrading the odd spherical design with an improved weapons and defence package. A computer upgrade of one of the Fenlons resulted in an increase in armament as well. The designs usual compliment of ten phasers was reduced to two improved FH-5s, while the remaining eight were replaced with seven FP-7 photon torpedoes, one of which was added to the front just above the shuttle bay. The remaining six were placed in the port and starboard weapons bays that held the four phasers. While the monitor was forced to sacrifice some space for the ammunition, the torpedo compliment gives the vessel better firepower for a much reduced cost in power allocation. In addition, since the monitors work close to their supply bases, reloading the ammo bay should rarely be a problem. The overal range of these weapons also increases the offensive range of the ship by an extra 20,000km.

This extra, left over power will be put to good use with the improved shield system installed, providing more protection for a marginal increase in power.

All new Fenlons produced will be of this type, however many of the outdated Mk-Is that have come in for upgrading make up the bulk of the 150 vessels so far.

While I intend to post more pics of this in the modelling section, I included one here. It is entirely built from scratch (even the flight stand). The core is a small sphere from a vending machine (for a quarter). It had a small eraser in it which I gave to my youngest. I will fill in more on the construction in the modelling section.

On the Fenlon, I really batted around using the FP-7. I tried it with a smaller torpedo (the FP-1, actually, and thus actually creating a theoretical Mk-V variant) but the reduced range of the torpedo didn't seem to work in playtesting. It was easily outranged and the smaller, faster ships were able to outflank it, not needing to raise shields since the Fenlon couldn't even fire back. When it could, though, it decimated ships with those ten point torpedoes. The eight point hits from the FP-7 seemed to balance out against the lighter Orion sheilds, which would usually let two or three points leak through per hit. Also, it gave the Fenlon a balanced firing solution with the FH-5s which also use chart R.

Since the Fenlon is so numerous (according to the SRM), it would stand to reason that it would survive a fair march of time, thus having to be improved to match the better destroyers and escorts of the other races as well.

Well, that's my logic about it, anyway.

...yeah, it's good in it's "improved armed to the teeth" approach, and I'm a fan of the Fenlon, but that isn't necessarily how I would handle it; I'm used to the monitors having light-to-medium beam weapons in bulk.

When Brad rebooted the site, I was in the midst of building a mini for my Pegasus carrier. When I was done, I compared it to the other official minis and found it to be a rather robust vessel. I had built it to the same size specifications I had laid out in my original write up and tried to keep it in scale with the rest of the fleet. Originally a class IV vessel, it just seemed too big, so I took the opportunity to reboot this design and try to correct some of the errors that may have been present. I wound up doing this for several of my designs, actually. So....

U.S.S. Pegasus Class IX/VIII Through Deck Carrier
Originally built just prior to The Great Awakening, the Pegasus vessels were the largest, most sophisticated warships the Federation could field. Designed as the first "through deck" attack shuttlecraft carrier, the Pegasus was to be a workhorse for Starfleet. Along with the 20 attack craft she carried in her massive (for the era) hangers, the Pegasus class was also heavily armed. Four monochromatic laser turrets covered all arcs of the ship, while two heavy batteries of Merculite Rockets could dispatch most vessels in front of the ship. It was found that the added weight of 20 assault vessels placed an extra burden on the propulsion system. This diminished the warp and sublight handling while the ship was fully loaded. The Pegasus became a much more efficient vessel once its four squadrons were launched.

The large hanger bays were mounted on extended primary hulls port and starboard of the warp nacelle. These massive, 80-meter long bays had two clamshell bay doors, one at each end of the bay. This would allow shuttles/attack craft to launch from the forward half of the bay while the rear of the hanger was open to accept landing craft. This operation was always rather hazardous, in addition to having to be done in an environmental suit. Underneath the launch/landing bay was the hanger for the shuttles themselves, as well as the mechanics bays, fuel supplies, etc. The first sub deck, or staging deck, was as big and open as the L/L bays; access to which came in the form of two elevators, one at each end. Elevators also connected the next two decks. They housed the mechanics bays and fuel supplies for the shuttles. They also contained the barracks for the forty-five shuttle pilots stationed onboard.

Refit on 1/9003, the Pegasus was soon to be eclipsed by other vessel designs that would make her obsolete. Nonetheless, the Pegasus was rebuilt with a tandem warp drive and improved impulse system. She was also converted to a class IX vessel. While the warp and sublight handling were improved, the new engines still could not overcome the problem of the added shuttle weight. The polarizing armour plating was replaced with a shielding system that provided just as much protection but with a fraction of the weight. The archaic laser ordinance was replaced with a more modern laser system. Unique to the class, the Pegasus vessels were the only Starfleet vessels ever to carry two different types of lasers. The bulky Merculite rockets batteries were replaced with two of the more efficient accelerator cannons. The Pegasus retained their through deck status, and received an upgraded batch of combat shuttles.

On stardate 1/9409, Starfleet Command pressed the remaining ten Pegasus vessels into service for the Klingon War. Overmatched by most of the Imperial Klingon Navy, two were quickly lost. Thinking that the aged vessels were not a combat asset, they were to be scrapped. Klingon numerical superiority, however, kept them out of reach of the scrap yard cutting torches. Instead of abandoning them, the Federation decided that their unique through deck design could be modified to carry fewer but much larger medical shuttles while the huge sub decks could be converted to hospital wards.

On 1/9507, four of the ships were sent to troubled spots along the front lines, providing emergency care for the many Starfleet personnel wounded during the fighting. Equipped with ten of the massive fourteen passenger shuttles, the ships could land and evac up to 140 wounded in one lift, not including the transporters, which were also upgraded.

The hospital facility had beds for 300 extended care patients, while the emergency ward could triage and tend to 30 wounded at a time. The ships crew quarters were separate from the hospital, allowing the vessel to operate while the hospital was under quarantine. Both the hospital and the ship had separate life support and gravitational systems.

After the war, the four hospital vessels remained on station until 2/0006, when many of the older vessels that participated in the war were retired.

The inclusion of phaser and photon torpedo technology into the Federation arsenal allowed the Pegasus class to be upgraded into a substantial firepower platform that could augment its fighter squadrons, giving them the much needed cover fire and making the fighters more of a presence on the battlefield. The lasers were replaced with the long range FH-3 supported by four FH-4s, two of which fired rearward. The heavy accelerator cannons were replaced with a pair of FP-1 torpedoes. The Mk-III also had it’s warp drive replaced with prototype models the newly developed FWE-2 engines, which improved the sublight handling while boosting the overall power output. The overhaul lightened up the spaceframe considerably, prolonging the lifespan of these vessels.

Two of the Mk-III vessels, the U.S.S. Eagle Plains and the U.S.S. Lake Bennett, actually survived the war intact. They were loaned to the newly formed Starfleet Marine Corp and provided a mobile base for fighter cover during ground troop actions.

Both the Lake Bennett and the Eagle Plains were to be scrapped, however fate intervened again when an offer to buy both ships (unarmed of course) came from an unusual source, an interstellar passenger cruise concern.

The cruise company bought both ships and immediately set forth modifying them for luxury commercial interstellar passenger transportation. Both hangers were replaced with massive clear domes that allow an almost unrestricted view of open space. These 80 meter long and 20 meter wide domes cover open terrain. The domes are 10 meters high, which are great for low grav parasailing (and other things, as the brochure hints to). This open terrain is meant for passenger recreation. One dome will have open beach, complete with sand and an artificial wave ocean. The other usually is more a tropical paradise, with rainforests and a grotto with waterfall, though these features are modular in design and can be changed at spacedock. These ships were completed on 2/0501 and are still in service along the Terran, Alpha Centauri, Andor, Tellar, and Vulcan routes.

I like merging the shuttle bay with other hulls. Perhaps one that is under slung?

Another design I felt compelled to revisit was this one, the Indomitable. A rather simple mini built from parts, the original stats had her at class III, but size wize she is a bit too bulky for that weight class, IMO. So I rewrote the background and taylored the stats to fit better.

INDOMITABLE CLASS V DESTROYER



The Indomitable class destroyer is a layover from the early days of the Starfleet. A very basic design, the Indomitable has survived many incarnations since its inception shortly after the Earth/Romulan conflict. Originally a much smaller class III vessel, the renaissance brought on by The Great Awakening gave birth to a much improved and enlarged class V version of the Mk-VI Indomitable.

Utilizing the newly developed FWB-1 warp drive system, the Mk-VI also included a newer, more powerful impulse drive from the FIB series. This combination made the vessel much more manoeuvrable in sublight and gave it nearly a one hundred percent increase in warp capability over the previous five models.

The Mk-VI also improved its offensive capabilities by replacing the monochromatic laser battery with a pair of the powerful FL-6 laser canons. The archaic Merculite rocket launcher was also replaced with a top-of-the-line FAC-3. These powerful weapons were usually placed on much larger cruisers, making the Indomitable a destroyer to be reckoned with.

The polarized hull was enhanced with a state of the art shielding system, the FSC, providing over four times the protection over the original system. The hull was also reinforced with new materials and construction techniques, making the design far more durable than before.

The Indomitable would undergo another change during the Four Year War with the Klingon Empire. The introduction of phaser and photon torpedo technology would be quickly implemented on the design, though not without problems. Several vessels were severely damaged when their new weapon systems malfunctioned. For example, the U.S.S. Unconquerable was obliterated with all hands lost when the containment protocol on the FP-1 torpedo system failed and caused the torpedo to prematurely detonate within the launch tube, breaching the warp reactor and vaporising the ship.

Again, the design would utilize weapons normally seen on much larger cruisers and frigates. The FH-3, which replaced the pair of FL-6s, provided twice the range and nearly twice the destructive power, but was small enough to be mounted as a bank in the original mountings. As stated earlier, the smaller, lighter FP-1 replaced the heavy particle accelerator, allowing the Indomitable to carry a much greater ammunition payload.

After the war, the Indomitable was to finally be put to rest. With only three surviving vessels still intact, Starfleet Commands appropriations committee decided to scrap two of them. Fate intervened, however, and a large Orion concern offered to purchase two of them for use as convoy protection in deep space. The committee allowed the two ships to be purchased, however the weapons were to be replaced with surplus FL-6 lasers, which are legal for use within Federation space.

The remaining Indomitable class vessel, the U.S.S. Impregnable, is on display in orbit around Memory Alpha.

The Indomitable name was not to fade from memory easy, however. On 2/2208, the name was given to a new breed of battleship. The name was in honor of the U.S.S. Indomitable herself for it's actions during the Four Years War. Only upgraded to the Mk-VI variant, the Indomitable nonetheless was instrumental in several engagements. Her final hour was also her finest. With a battle hardened crew at the helm, the outclassed destroyer fought a pitched battle which saw the destruction of two Klingon destroyers and a "paint-fresh" D-10A before succumbing to her attackers. The recovored log from the Indomitable had this final message:

"Federation Commander! To your ship and your crew, who fought with the tenacity worthy of a battleship, we honor your skill and courage by granting you a death worthy of a true warrior."

THE MINI
The Indomitable is basically a bunch of scrap material glued to a saucer section and a pair of nacelles. Fast, cheap, and easy to produce. I was working with a buddy of mine on 3d printing, but I don't want to produce stuff from other people, so I'm teaching myself 3d rendering in order to be able to produce some of these wierd creations for FASATrek on my own (I'm also working on stuff for my new model railroad project, which has taken up a lot of my time). This will be one of the first, if I can get it right.

That is a neat little ship you have there. I especially like the write-up as it "fits" well within the FASAverse. One thing you might want to address in your write-up is a name-shift for the Indomitable to the later Class XII Battleship - maybe in honor of the original ship. That would really cement it into the FASAverse.

Another subtle reboot I have done lately is my version of the Crusader class destroyer. I added an updated version using phaser technology and fleshed out the flufftext a bit.

CRUSADER CLASS V DESTROYER



A vessel that nearly met its extinction during The Four Years War, the Crusader class destroyer actually predates the Larson by nearly twenty years. Shown here in her “Great Awakening” upgrade and her final configuration, the Crusader was the backbone of Starfleet's destroyer fleet until the development of the Larson in 1/8801. Upgraded in 1/8906, the Crusaders were never able to match the Larsons, which incorporated more lasers and an accelerator cannon versus the Crusader's four medium laser batteries.

The Crusader is a very straightforward design, owing its origins to the very beginning of human warp flight. The Crusader shares a passing resemblance to a warp three destroyer called the Cavalry class that served mankind in the Earth/Romulan conflict. While this is not an upgrade of that long retired class, the resemblance is striking.

When the design was upgraded to the Mk-VIII in 1/9500, it was one of the first vessels to be equipped with the newly developed phaser technology. These early weapons were similar in ability to the heavy laser systems, but much lighter and taking up less room. One of the proposed uses of the extra space was to install an accelerator cannon, but the modifications to the front of the ship would have interfered with its navigational array. Instead, a large barracks and training area were developed for a new concept in interstellar navy warfare, marines. A small contingent of twenty men were assigned to the destroyers for security and boarding of enemy vessels. While unsuccessful in this application, onboard marine contingents would prove to be an excellent asset in the much larger frigate vessels after the war.

During the first pushes of the war, many Crusaders were thrown against the Klingon wall, only to be smashed by the vastly superior Klingon weaponry. Casualties for the Crusader class were among the highest of the destroyer fleets. Of the 100 ships that entered the war, 90 were destroyed, 2 were scrapped, one was captured, and one is listed as missing. The surviving 6 vessels were eventually stripped and sold off to private concerns.

The Crusaders were produced at the Sol IV shipyards from 1/7010 till 1/7811. A total of 250 were built. The Mk-VII and the Mk-VIII versions were all refits from previous models.

Cool ship design

During my reboot, I altered and changed several of my designs; rewriting stats and flufftext to round out any inconsistencies. With the Thruxton, I did very little to alter it, other than adding an upgraded Mk-II version and plump up the text a bit.

THRUXTON CLASS IX CRUISER



The Thruxton class cruiser was a hastily constructed ship built to quickly augment the Federation forces
during the Four Years War. It was designed with minimal comforts and no secondary roles in mind. It was
purely a combat vessel. In order to lengthen the survivability of the ship in combat, it was designed with a
minimal aspect elevation, making it difficult to target at range. The nacelles are mounted only a few meters
above the main saucer section, making it appear that they are built into the saucer itself.

The Mk-II introduced phaser technology to the battlefield. Meant to be pared with photon technology, the
pressures of the Four Years War with the Klingon Empire forced the refit of the Thruxton to be stunted;
resulting in just the lasers being replaced with the FH-4 phaser system. This improved the Thruxtons
offensive range by 40% and boosting the effective damage curve. The 25 ships that were upgraded were
done so while undergoing battle repairs. All Thruxtons retained their accelerator cannons.

The upgrade also saw a boost in sheilding protection with the installation of the FSK sheild system. While
requiring an increase in power, the additional protection was a welcome relief to the Thruxton crews. There
were also plans to upgrade the engines, however the time factor involved forced the ships back onto the
front line.

After the war, the surviving Thruxton vessels were orphans. With no secondary roll to fill in Starfleet and an
no war to fight, they were slated to be scrapped, like so many other subclasses built at that time. Of the 100
Mk-Is built, 25 were converted to Mk-IIs, 40 were destroyed, 1 was captured, and 9 were listed as missing,
2 have been sold to private concerns, and 28 have been scrapped. Of the 25 Mk-IIs, 4 were destroyed, 1
listed as missing, 2 have been sold, and 18 have been scrapped.

THE MINI

If I recall correctly, this is the top half of a massive four nacelled dreadnought from ADB. I thought the whole thing looked stupid, especially the poorly crafted secondary hull, so that part was delegated to the parts bin. The nacelles were used elsewhere, and this top half became a ship a few RPG characters ran during my first foray into the Four Years War storyline. The mini, on the left, was part of a three set of non-descript destroyers I designed for that campaign, including the Indomitable (middle) and the Crusader (right). In fact, I think the nacelles on the Crusader came from that same dreadnought mini.

CHESSELL CLASS XI CRUISER



In July of 1/9406, the first of a new breed of warship slipped its moorings. While the Constitution class starships were designed to be well-armed exploratory vessels, the Chessell class were built purely for combat. At the time, all Starfleet vessels were equipped with limited scientific capabilities, but the Chessell class was even more restricted. It’s heavy weaponry and reinforced hull left little room for the numerous laboratories and specialized scientific equipment carried by the Constitutions. The Chessell was supposed to be the combat equal to the mighty Constitution, but in simulations and war games, the Chessell beat out the venerable Connies every time.

The key to the Chessell’s success relied on many factors. First was the incredible firepower the Chessell possessed. Four medium/heavy laser batteries covered the front and sides of the ship, but it was the four heavy accelerator cannons mounted forward that gave the Chessell its devastating reputation. Nothing had the ability to withstand the brutal assault these four cannons could dish out. One shot from one of these massive cannons could literally tear a ship to pieces if it was unprotected. Usually two were enough to defeat a vessel at full battle ready.

The Chessell was more manoeuvrable than the Constitution. The warp/impulse engine combination produced 7% more power than the Constitution and the compact design of the vessel made the engines more efficient. It also gave the Chessell better warp characteristics.

The Chessell’s overall defensive stance was far more impressive. While the Constitution was renown for its survivability, the Chessell was the unknown hero in that department. The overall size of the Chessell was small, one hundred meters shorter than even the Larson class destroyer, but it carried the weapons and systems of a much larger warship. Compressed into such a small area forced the designers to place the needed bulkheads and reinforcements for all the equipment throughout the whole vessel. This gave the Chessell an unequalled structural integrity, surpassed only by the Federation class dreadnought. Advancements in shield technology were installed on the Chessell as well. A new binary phase transducer system was introduced that gave the Chessell 10% more protection for 50% of the power.

The main drawback to the Chessell was the complexity of construction. The compact size that gave the vessel most of its advantages was also the ships undoing. Since most of the components used on the Chessell had to be either specially constructed or modified in order to fit, it took longer than normal to build each vessel. It was because of this that construction of the Chessell class was halted at six vessels.

The onset of the Federation/Klingon war required a large number of ships quickly. The Chessell, though probably the best ship versus the Klingons, could not have its construction accelerated for the war effort. Other, simpler designs were constructed in its stead in order to balance the Klingons numerical superiority. While numbering only six, the Chessell class vessels still garnered a much-deserved reputation with the Klingons. If fear ever entered a Klingon commander’s dictionary, it was the Chessell class vessel that wrote it in.

The ships established themselves as a dominant force for the Federation early. The U.S.S. Osprey (N.C.C. 1304) under command of Captain Mans Sigborn was on picket duty in the Jannill system when remote sensors picked up three unknown Klingon vessels entering the system. Jannill is known for its numerous asteroid belts, so Captain Sigborn hid the Osprey in among a belt of asteroids directly in the Klingon task forces path. Staying close to one large body and under low power, the Osprey was missed when the Klingons passed by. Now with the element of surprise, the Osprey powered up and wheeled out from her hiding spot, catching the Klingons from behind. The Klingon squadron was lead by an L-6 Defender class frigate and escorted by two D-16 Swiftwind destroyers. They were an advanced scouting unit for a much larger task force, but at that time, the Osprey and her crew were unaware of it.

The Osprey quickly closed from the rear and unloaded all four cannons into the two destroyers, crushing the rear shields and breaching both ships warp cores. The resulting explosions from the two destroyers blinded both the Osprey and the L-6. Unable to avoid the massive fireballs, the Osprey plowed through the burning wreckage, hurtling towards an enemy with no idea where it was.

The L-6 was in the midst of a turn when the Osprey struck, having only just picked up the Federation cruiser as it came out of hiding. It was nearly around when the destroyers exploded, so the view screen was momentarily filled with the flash. The next few seconds would set the tone for the Klingon reaction to the Chessell class vessels.

The sight of the Osprey bursting through the debris must have had an awe-inspiring effect on the Klingon crew. With its hull-scorched black from the warp plasma fires burning and trailing off into space, the Osprey bore down on the bewildered Klingon frigate. The Osprey opened fire again with the cannons, striking the L-6 with three out of four. The shells hammered into the frigate, severely damaging one warp engine and shattering most of the forward disruptors. The Osprey overshot the crippled Klingon warship, forcing it to slow down and turn back around. As the Osprey lined up for another pass, the remaining vessels from the task force arrived. Now severely outnumbered, the Osprey retreated out of the system.

It was later learned that this first encounter would eventually be the undoing for the Chessell class vessels. The story of the ‘demon-spawn’, borne from the fires of Gre’thor and sent by Fek’lhr to claim the souls of the dishonoured spread throughout the Klingon navy and it became the battle cry of many Klingon warriors who vowed to slay this beast set against them by their Federation adversaries. Wolf packs were established within many of the Klingon fleets whose sole purpose was to hunt down the Chessell class cruisers. Many of the vessels in these hunting parties were lost. Indeed, the kill ratio still fell into the Chessell’s favour.

Attrition, however, got the best of the class, and the last Chessell to fall was the class flagship herself in 1/9602 during the Battle of Falgor. Three of the remaining vessels, the Chessell, the Shilling, and the Osprey, formed the anchor of a squadron covering the withdrawal of the First and Third Federation Battle groups from the area. All three cruisers were lost, however the Klingons lost numerous capital vessels to the three Chessells, including two L-6 frigates and at least eight D-7s. An uncounted number of destroyers were also lost to the three Chessells.

The war ended two years later and the Federation retired or scrapped many of the classes put into production for the war effort. With no known surviving Chessells left intact, the class was also one of those that fell to the bureaucratic axe. The Chessell would be resurrected, however, thirty-two years later.

THE MINI

I am sure that everyone has cobbled up this little bauble for their own use. This is my take on the Federation Dreadnought from the Star Trek Starfleet Technical Manual.

Federation Class XIV Dreadnought

The Federation class ships were originally conceived in 1/8912 by Maximillian Reinhardt, the brilliant but eccentric and egotistical astronautical engineer who was an instrumental figure during "The Great Awakening"; his hands personally drafting parts of legendary vessels like the Constitution and Chessell class ships.

Dr. Reinhardt proposed a return to a three-engine design at a time when the engineering community shunned such ideas as folly. The Tritium class cruisers, the first and only three nacelle-designed ships ever built to date, were dismal failures.

Nearly laughed out of astronautical circles, Dr. Reinhardt stormed the Starfleet Appropriations committee with a narcissistic gusto that only someone with his obvious credentials could have accomplished. He demanded that the committee look at his design again, claiming that he had solved the problem of balancing a tri-axial warp envelope and that the Federation class starships were "a testament to his brilliance and to the testicular fortitude of humanity who, on the backs of pioneering giants such as Cochrane and Leedstrom, would demand dominance in the heavens." While full of pomp and ceremony and not much substance, Reinhardt nonetheless gained the ear of the politicians who sat on the committee, and within a year, the funding and construction of the first ship, aptly named the U.S.S. Federation, was well underway.

Trouble brewed from the start. The ship itself was nearly 320 meters long and 168 meters wide, while the largest construction cage at the time was only 325 meters long and 170 meters wide. Locations on the hull, especially the outer edges of the saucer section, were built by hand with teams of men tethered together in environmental suits. Even after the hull was finished, it still took over a year to finish the massive interior.

Problems were not limited by to sheer size of the ship either. The triple engine design required building a computer system capable of handling the massive computations needed in order to make Dr. Reinhardt’s formula work. While not really cited as the cause, the M-4 computer system owes its genesis to this massive project. So to does the impulse drive system. Stymied by the lack of a system powerful enough to push this massive ship, the project, already two years behind schedule and well over budget, looked to become the biggest boondoggle in the history of Starfleet until Smith & Smythe, a producer of impulse drives for many years, proposed using a new, experimental engine they were designing for production.

With all the pieces now in place, Dr. Reinhardt stood triumphantly on the bridge of the U.S.S. Federation as she slipped her moorings and floated free for the first time on (FASA) stardate 1/9409. Two months later, after a flawless shakedown, the U.S.S. Federation began her duties as a ship of the line.

Two more Mk-I vessels would be completed during the Four Years War. All three would eventually see action in that conflict. The last, the U.S.S. Forrest, was completed as a Mk-II after the war; carrying the newer, more sophisticated phaser and photon torpedo technology.

Of the three Mk-Is, two were summarily scrapped after continuous use forced early retirement. A side effect of the tri-nacelle design, the placement of the heavy engines placed tremendous stress on the already taxed space frame. A more balanced arrangement would be found in the files of Dr. Reinhardt after his disappearance. The last Mk-I, the U.S.S. Cygnus, disappeared while under command of her designer, Dr. Reinhardt. While under "test flight" conditions trying to solve the stress fracture dilemma, Dr. Reinhardt and his team of scientists/engineers disappeared near the galactic border.

Interesting take on the Federation class, swede. My version was designed around the time of about 2/12 to account that it was still being considered per the Technical Manual (Stardate 6000 or something like that in the TM?)

Krigaren Class XII Cruiser

Built at the end of the Four Years War, the Krigaren was the second brainchild of the eccentric and narcissistic Maxamillian Reinhardt. Reinhardt, who was listed as missing along with the Federation dreadnought Cygnus, had left detailed files behind regarding the feasibility of his tri-nacelle theories. In these files lay the complete specifications and plans for the Krigaren, a class XII cruiser that could bridge the gap between the Constitution cruisers and the ultra-heavy Federation dreadnought.

These plans seemed to correct several problems that were faced by the dreadnoughts, most important of those was the extreme stress the three nacelles placed on the already burdened space-frame. They also seemed to solve the problem of warp balance should one of the engines be rendered inoperative. The new plans also called for a modular construction, wherein major components like the engines and weapons could be easily swapped out for replacement or upgrade with minimal downtime.

The decision was made to construct four of these new vessels in spite of the financial boondoggle Reinhardt's previous tri-nacelled design turned out to be. The infrastructure was already in place from that project anyway, and the construction facility that built the dreadnoughts was lying dormant. Surprisingly, the construction of these four new vessels went rather smoothly. Jokingly credited to Reinhardt's absence, the Krigaren design was actually very sound; the modular construction making assembly very easy. Most of the components could be assembled elsewhere and simply dropped into place when required.

The ship was designed before the advent of phaser and photon technology, however simple modifications allowed already stockpiled FH-5 and FP-1 systems to be installed. The new FSI shield system was on the drawing board when Reinhardt disappeared, so he had already planned to use this system on the Krigaren.

The Krigaren slipped her moorings in 1/9804, an amazing nine months after the decision to build her was made. She proceeded to spend the next six weeks testing her systems, which performed without incident.

The performance of the Krigaren was excellent. The offensive and defensive capabilities of the design were apparent, and the upgrade to phaser and photon technology put her on a superior footing to anything the Klingons had. Her new, experimental warp drive was sound and could sustain an emergency warp of nine for longer than any other design to date. The sublight handling was adequate for a ship of her size. While not the most nimble, the engine combination was still fairly efficient. While all these things were positive, the most glaring negative report from the test crew was her lack of overall power. Piloting the Krigaren in combat would be a precarious balance power wise, more so than usual. Starfleet was confident, however, that in the hands of a competent commander, this problem could be mastered.

The remaining three ships under construction were completed and tested in short order, however operations on the front lines of the war would be ever so short, for the war was only a few scant months away from being over. Only two ever saw combat, performing admirably against their Klingon foes.

These war-born children were re-assigned to Galaxy Exploration command, where they continued to serve unchanged for 50 years, when in 2/4806 they were retired from active service. The Krigaren is currently mothballed, while the Kriger and the Sodalane have been outfitted as engineering training vessels. The Soturi was stripped and sold to a private concern.
