The Ships of Axanar

I took a little break from my TNG projects to put together an SRM for the ships of Axanar.

Like for TNG SRM, I followed certain 'formulas' and parameters for these designs as well. Overall power levels, potential movement and firepower are all limited. Watching the Axanar videos, I saw ships that moved very slowly compared to what we see in TNG and these ships moved pretty slow even compared to the damaged Enterprise and Reliant from ST II: WoK. Keeping this in mind, I limited power as much as I could - for both the Klingon and Federation ships. The early Federation ships are outclassed by their Klingon counterparts - as they should be. However, the Ares and Constitution help redress that imbalance when they are introduced. The earlier Federation ships depend on lasers and accelerator cannons. In the FASA manuals, the Constitution was also armed with these weapons. However, the Axanar production introduces phasers and photon torpedoes on the Ares - which pre-dates the Constitution. So these weapons are introduced earlier than in the FASA publications. Likewise, Enterprise clearly shows us that the Klingons (and even the Romulans) were using photon torpedo weaponry long before the Federation was formed. Keeping this in mind, the Klingon ships are all equipped with these weapons. The Axanar videos also show the Federation and Klingon ships firing their weapons from very close range and missing as often as they hit. So I deliberately used short-ranged and inaccurate weapons as often as I could - for both sides. The low-powered shields, low-powered and inaccurate weaponry combined with anemic movement will make games very challenging and a lot of fun to play. The Klingon ships can outmaneuver the Federation ships but the Federation ships are pretty solid and take more punishment.

The profiles are still incomplete - missing all the extras like cargo space, transports, date entering service, etc. But I have provided enough data so far to play the ships in games. I will add the extra info as I have time.

Hermes Class

The Hermes is one of the newest ships to enter service prior to the Four Years War. It is a heavily armed destroyer.

D-6 Class

This D-6 uses the same engines as FASA's D-4. Axanar's D-6 has two massive cannons in the secondary hull, so I gave it two KD-7 disruptors for the beam weapon armament. Its weapons are potent, but it cannot defend itself from attacks coming from port or starboard. This ship should be escorted by the D-5 in combat.

D-7 Class

My D-7A differs slightly from FASA's in just two significant ways: First, it uses KWE engines. Power remains the same but it bumps the ship up to a Class IX vessel (with the shield generator bumped up to keep protection the same) to give it the mass it deserves and I have added a KP-2 torpedo because the Klingons have been portrayed as early users of this weapon.

No, I haven't gotten back to this one. I've still been refining my TNG Klingon and Romulan SRMs.
I started this project long time ago before the fan film got stifled. I was hoping more "official" data on these ships would come out to give me a better idea of how to equip them.

I have the Squadron Strike book with SSDs which is official and the ship models which show a lot more weapons that expected and match Squadron Strike SSDs for the most part. Most of the early class ships have two phaser banks, 6 pulse cannons (Squadron Strike calls them this) and four torpedo launchers 2f 2a so a bit in conflict with the prelude where it says they are outclassed, they can tear a big hole in a D4 at close range in one turn and two can take down a D7.

Yeah, most ships have more beam weapons than FASA portrays on their ships. Because of the fast play and limited effectiveness of shields in the Combat Simulator, the ships are neutered a bit. For example, the Enterprise has always had a lot of phasers - 14 in most sources, but portrayed as only 6 in the FASA-verse. Likewise, FASA only portrays a ship having only as many torpedo launchers as can be physically seen on the model. Given the limitations of the 4YW weapons, shields and propulsion systems, it was necessary to severely limit the weaponry or no game would ever make it past turn 3.

The "official" data I was waiting on was crew sizes, do they have transporters yet?, any "fluff" stating that cargo is limited or some other characteristic.

As far as how they function in game terms, I am pretty happy with how these ships have played.

...and torpedo tubes were capable of holding several armed torpedoes in reserve. Even damaged the torpedo deck on the Enterprise in The Wrath of Khan was able to fire two torpedoes from the single undamaged launcher. Incorporating this level of firepower the game would have been even more extremely unbalanced as written.

Typically dorsal and ventral phasers are just taken as one bank in gamifying the ships to 2D. The Ares in the films has four forward torpedo launchers, 6 phaser banks on the saucer ( actually 7 ventral & 5 dorsal but count as 6 banks) , four aft torpedo launchers and two separate aft phasers not in a bank (seen firing in a clip). This thing is loaded for bear. Given the premise of the story is, the D7 out-classes it, I'm a bit of a loss as to how? The Ares is much more heavily armed than the Constitution. I'm guessing the Constitution has better shields, phasers and torpedos. At the moment I'm trying to create an Axanar bubble so that the ships in it sort of follow the story / models rather than the ship construction manual etc.

I've been running continuous simulations of all the ships from Axanar with different ship setups including the tinker designs. I'd agree that they are playing quite well and its all over by turn 5 normally. Even though not exactly matching films & models. I'm assuming tinker used the construction rules to get the CE D/WDF values?

My solution to that problem was to give the Ares the worst possible photon torpedoes - after all, it was the earliest employer of the weapon and some ship had to be equipped with them. The torpedoes inflict a modest 6 points of damage, but use the very short ranged Firing Chart D. At five hexes, half of the torpedoes would likely miss. As for the four aft tubes, in the images I saw at the time I wrote this, it did not have any aft firing torpedoes (they were not very detailed).

The game in any genre does not really match any of the films or TV programs. it is what it is (but still far superior to SFB in my opinion). What I try to do is design ships that are entertaining to play (if not "super" efficient) and maybe even with a bit of character.

Again, at the time I wrote this, there wasn't a lot of info available. I had only a few brief scenes to base these on. My take away from those was that the ships were slow and lumbering and the weapons missed...a lot. When they did hit, it wasn't long before the ship was destroyed. So power levels were kept modest and the weapons I chose to equip the early ships with had pretty poor firing charts. Shields were limited and inefficient.

All of these ships conform to FASA's design rules with no "house rules" alterations.

OK, based on the new information I have made changes to the Ares. This pushes the limits of what I can do with her as she will go overweight if I add anything else. To compensate for increasing the number of weapons, I have limited the firing arcs of the phasers.

Yes I've studied your designs in depth and I think you made some good choices on the inaccurate torps and early phasers. They can't hit much in the movie and when they do it basically nukes the ship, as in the shields are useless for a torp hit.

I have the Marklin with FP-3 2f torps and 2 FH-7s banks fp & fs, based on the model hardpoints. As you say these short range systems low accuracy systems are more in keeping with the Axanar feel.

Looking at images of the Marklin, I would give it two FAC-3's instead of torpedoes. In Axanar, the cruder Federation weapons have large elongated weapons ports and photon torpedoes have circular ports. Plus, there is a LOT of space dedicated to those missile bays - implying a pretty bulky weapon. Doesn't the Marklin predate the Ares and Constitution? If so, it should have lasers instead of phasers. FH-7's (based on the numbering system) may be a bit advanced for this time period.

armament of a frigate, Marklins were often cut off by Imperial advances, and had to
make daring escapes to bring important information home.

The Marklin class is armed identically to the Capella, with significantly better
shielding. New-construction Marklins were built with phasers during the war.

Prelude & Design Decisions
Currently, four weapon systems appear on-screen in Prelude to Axanar. Over the
course of making the game, we added enhanced versions of a few of them.
Imperial Photon Torpedoes: On-screen, these appear to be larger and more dangerous
than Federation models, but a bit slower. (The CGI artists said that any consistency
here is largely accidental.) They also have a noticeable pause between launches
on-screen.

Federation Photon Torpedoes: These appear to be smaller and to launch more rapidly
than the Empire’s photon torpedoes. The Imperials launch single, large torpedoes; the
Federation launches a few smaller ones. Based on a skewed sample, Federation photon
torpedoes appear to be more accurate. A higher percentage of them hit on-screen;
there is certainly some selection bias in terms of “what looks cool on-screen.”

Disruptors: Disruptors are the Imperial “swing weapon”; they appear to be used
after a photon torpedo has hit the target. They’re portrayed with a yellow-white line
that moves quickly from the firing point to the enemy ship. The amount of time a
given line is maintained between ship models varies considerably.

Phasers: Phasers are the Federation “swing weapon”; they appear to sometimes be

I'll have to watch these scenes and make revisions based on them. however, the weapons systems available in the game are limited - it is what it is.
