Very nice indeed! I always liked the Ranger; it makes a lot of sense as a small scout, and yet somehow avoids the 'just a saucer with nacelles' trap. (In spite of the fact that's exactly what it is!) It looks right for the TMP era.
The FASA original didn't have windows, did it? What do you think of adding windows, to help the sense of scale?

Well, I took a lot of artistic license with this ranger. I added visible impulse nozzles and weaponry and changed the saucer shape a bit. Also I replaced the nacelles with nacelles of my own creation. I am not usually bothered by re-scaled warp nacelles, but these are really small and back in the day when I did more 3 view schematics someone asked me to change the nacelles so I did. As for scale, this ship is really small. A crew of 77 is ridiculously impossible. Based on the internal volume I'd say less than 20. Here is a cut-away with an example deck layout. That is the refit Enterprise bridge there on Deck 1.  |

You could safely assume a much smaller bridge than that of the refit Connie, so I imagine you've popped that in there just for reference.
Yes, 77 does seem excessive for such a vessel... the crew would possibly fit if the shifts were all hot-bunking, but the real debate would still be - why so many?
I like the changes you made. I often re-use elements of nacelles, but try to tweak or change them to suggest they are engineered specifically for a class. While it's true that different aircraft often share a common powerplant (witness the Rolls Royce Merlin), it is not always the case, and if you're building lots of a particular type, the tooling for a new engine / cowling / airscrew etc is more than justified, if it improves that aircraft's performance. The same economics of scale should logically apply in starship construction. Therefore, new nacelles make plenty of sense.
Also, I think your nacelles are very neat! Minimalist but recognisable. They suggest a shared design lineage with those on the Oberth class.

Yes, the Connie bridge is just for reference. Empty deck separations do not convey scale as well as recognizable objects like chairs and consoles. Yes, 77 people would "fit" in the ship, but given typical Federation standards I don't see it happening. Furthermore, a ship like this isn't going to need that many people. I'm glad you like the nacelles. They were part of a design process and the Oberth engines certainly did influence them. Glad you like them. |

Ranger plays exactly as what it is...a survey ship...go out and map the galaxy. Not much for fighting an enemy with, but that little ship is tough. Well armed for its size, but well even though it does carry torpedo tubes, I don't imagine that her small size would allow her to carry much of a useful load in her magazines.
In general, we usually keep her as a one strike ship...mainly uses her torpedo load as a way to get out of trouble and run like hell.
We have also used her as a covert ops ship...her small size does give her an advantage of generally not being seen...in our campaigns we use her to deliver advanced Marine Recon troops for prep on a landing type operation.
Great little survey and spy ships...

I don't imagine that her small size would allow her to carry much of a useful load in her magazines. In my modelled interior she's got 56 torpedos in her forward magazine and 24 in her aft magazine. |
